Ye Raaten~~, Ye Raaten Ye Hansnaa Hansaa~na, Inhe Na Bhulaana,
Bhulaa~na~~~ Muze Bhul Jaa~na ....

Sitting on zulA, in the garden after supper, in the night of
spring; while you are enjoying some lovely cool breeze, scented
by those beautiful while rajniga.ndhA flowers behind you; there
goes these mesmerising singing in the air, probably from a
transistor you turned on a while ago, tuned to Radio Ceylone!!
You are completely lost in it and it strikes you only after Jyoti
Parmar's announcement, it's 19th February and legendary Bengali
composer late Pankaj Mullick's anniversary. A voice that reminds
you of spring anytime!

Song: Piya Milan Ko Jaana, Jaana Piya Milan Ko Jaana ...

        Film: Kapaal Kundala (1938)
        Music: Pankaj Mullick
        Lyrics: ?
        Singer: Pankaj Mullick
        *ing: Pankaj Mullick, ?

Not many may know this song, this is among his initial songs.
Even without instruments -- other than tabla and sarod -- this
master brings about, a memorable performance. His sweet, loud and
trained voice fills all the space with some pleasant notes of
music and happy feelings. That was the power of his voice. And he
was no follower, but an trendsetting emperor. Notice the change
of rhythm, deliberations in movements of notes and pace at
'Paayal Ko Baandh Ke ...'. A great song by a great man.

I am familiar with one more song of him from the same film, but
can't recall it, at this very moment :(

I would have loved to discuss Zalzala (1952) or Yatrik (1954) --
two absolutely grand musical treats -- but had to settle for this
:( IMO, these two films, that came late in his carrier, are
highest point of his creative life. He also had one more and
perhaps last film in 1950s -- that has Jamal Sen as other
composer (perhaps to complete the film ?) -- called Kasturi
(1954) where he has sung couple of nice songs along with a singer
who, he seem to have discovered in 50s, Dhananjay Bhattacharya.
All that will have to wait till I find some time ... :(
