So, I take my little Sony Dabba with me and climb up to my cozy little room in the attic. I reach out for the new HMV cassettes my folks have sent me (GHazals from films, Golden Collection) and start playing one of those cassettes at random. I don't read the label 'cause I find it exciting to guess the songs from the opening score (reminds me of those good old Vividh Bharthi days :-) ). I look out of the window, and it's snowing heavily. Ah! The pefect ambience to listen to GHazals: snow outside and a heated room inside, with moonlight reflecting in from the snow accumualted on the rooftops. The Ghazals flow smoothly one after the other and I'm able to come up with the pstats for most of them. I even pat myself on the back :-) for identifying the Khaiyyam classic "Tum apna ranj-o-GHam, apni pareshani mujhe dedo..." from the opening tune. Next, there's a short prelude, and before I can identify the song, Talat Sahab's silken voice starts filling my ear. The first two lines themselves prove why Talat Mehmood's prowess at singing GHazals is lauded: Ashkon ne jo paaya hai woh geeton ne diya hai Is par bhi suna hai ke zamaane ko gila hai I *have* to know the pstats of this beautiful GHazal. I hit the pause button and reach out for the lable. I strain my eyes and hold it against the moonlight. "Lyrics: Sahir" WHY am I not surprised ? Aur kaun ho sakta hai? But, the name in the MD's colums surprises me. N.DUTTA! (I'm going to overlook the corrections made by our local Konkani expert :-), and stick to the spelling used by HMV). This dude was so talented. It is indeed a pity that he didn't earn a big name for himself in the film industry. Alcohol was the reason cited by Rajan. What a tune he has composed for the Ghazal! I couldn't resist playing the song over and over again. Moreso, since I was listening to it after a loooooooong time. Here are the other ashaar of this Ghazal by Sahir. The first one is my fav. Sahir has the ability to point out what is least perceptible. The junta often perceives the superficial and passes judgement accordingly. Little or no thought is given to the others' point of view. Jo taar se nikli hai woh dhun, sab ne suni hai (2) Jo saaz pe guzri hai woh kis dil ko pata hai Ashkon ne jo paaya hai.... The second sher scoffs at what is often held up in high esteem by the common man. In this case the garden (baaGH). The phrase "bas ek baaGH" brings out the same attitude which Sahir evinces in "Ye duniya agar mil bhi jaae to kya hai.." Hum phool hain auron ke lie, laae hai KHushboo (2) Apne lie le de ke bas ek baaGH mila hai Ashkon ne jo paaya hai, woh geeton ne diya hai Is par bhi suna hai ke zamaane ko gila hai Talat Mehmood's superb rendition of this Ghazal, together with N.Dutta's melodious and smooth tune and Sahir's deep lyrics makes this one of the best filmi Ghazals. BTW, this collection of filmi ghazals is definitely worth buying. I'll compile a list of the songs in this volume and in other collections (info. sent by Vandana, Prince, Pretti et al.) and add it to the info. in my WWW page soon...
