Due to the presence of RAFIans and the KKKlan on RMIM, Rafi and KK are discussed almost daily on RMIM. Whenever a semi-classical song is mentioned, Manna Dey's prowess as a singer is pointed out. However, but for a single post by Jagat Mavani and the .sig of the Mukesh fan, Preeti Ranjan Panda, Mukesh hasn't received his due recognition on RMIM. Mukesh has often been hailed as the tragedy king among singers by his fans. To counter this claim, the Rafi and KK fans present a list of countless sad songs which these great singers have also sung. However, what they fail to see is that the "dard" in Mukesh's voice was unique. That was the beauty of the singers of old. Each had his characteristic style. Mukesh voice didn't require a sad note on the flute in the background to capture a sombre mood. It created the environment on its own. Mukesh's voice is often associated with the music of Shankar-Jaikishan. And rightly so too, 'cause it was SJ who utilized his voice most. However, people tend to overlook the Mukesh gems sung under the direction of other MD's. My fav. Mukesh songs have been composed by Kalyanji-Anandji and Roshan. The KA/Mukesh combo gave us hits such as "Main to ek khwaab hun, is khwaab se tu pyaar na kar...", "Waqt karta jo wafa aap humaare hote..." and "Mujhko is raat ki tanhaai me aawaaz na do...". Roshan Sahab made Mukesh sing some of his best songs, "Teri duniya me dil lagta nahin...", "Bhoole se mohabbat kar baiTHa, naadan tha bechar dil hi to hai..." and "Oho re taal mile nadi ke jal me..." being some of the examples. Although sad songs were Mukesh's forte, he did manage to deliver the goods in some fast-paced songs such as "Tum rooTHi raho, main manaata rahun, ke in adaaon pe aur pyaar aata hai..."Dheere dheere bol koi sun na le..." and the Roshan gem "BaRe armaanon se rakha hai balam teri qasam, pyaar ki duniya me ye pehle quadam..." Mukesh has also sung a lot of non-filmi GHazals under Khaiyyam's baton. His voice suited GHazals very well and my fav. filmi GHazal is from the movie Kinare Kinare under Jaidev's direction "Jab GHam-e-ishq sataata hai to hansleta hun". When the lyrics are good, it's always a joy to hear them in Mukesh's voice. He cud express the lyricist's exact views by laying empasis on the right words in the proper manner. An example of such an accomplishment is from the song "Tum mujhe bhool bhi jaao to ye haq hai tumko.." in which Mukesh's sings the portion "Bhook aur pyaas ki maari hui is duniya me, ishq hi ek haqeeqat nahin kuch aur bhi hai" in such a beautiful manner. It is therefore no surprise that Sahir's lyrics in Mukesh's voice have always been very popular (Phir Subah Hogi, Dil Hi To Hai, Kabhi Kabhi, etc.). God, I got carried away! This was supposed to be an introduction for the Naushad Jaimala on Mukesh, but has become so long that I'll post the Jaimala as part II. Mukesh's contribution to Hindi film music has been immense. Looking at the current state of playback singers, one can only cry out: "O jaanewaale ho sake to lauT ke aana" ! Sami Mohammed (A Naushad fan)...tu kahe agar jeevan bhar main geet sunata jaaun! _______________________________________________________________________________ | Sami Mohammed | Emulsion Polymers Institute | I polymerize, Dept. of Chemical Engineering | Therefore, I AM Lehigh University | _______________________________|________________________________________________
