A few hundred posts ago, Porkmeister (thanks, Porky for your series, even though you "can't promise regularity") posted a song composed by "N. Dutta." It should actually have been N. Datta. This might seem like a cavil to most of you but, as a true Goan, I cannot let the bongs usurp this most brilliant composer as one of their own. In the past, I have fearlessly exposed similar attempts by the ghats. N. Datta - Dattaram Naik - from Goa, shone for a brief while before he withered away, claimed by his alcoholism (like all true, talented Goans). But the gems this great talent left behind will haunt as well as delight us for years to come. To place Datta Naik in the proper perspective, I need to remind readers that what must surely be among the most poignant songs ever was composed by him: Lata's "Aurat ne janam diyaa mardoN ko, mardoN ne usse bazar diya." Someone (Jasjit?) has already commented on this song recently. Naik was no flash in the pan. His work overall was first-rate and the films "Dhool ka Phool" and "Chandrakanta" spring to mind right now. I am especially fond of the Lata-MKapoor duet from D ka P: Tere pyaar ka aasraa chaahataa hoon, wafaa kar rahaa hoon wafaa chaahataa hoon. He worked mostly with Sahir Ludhianvi. I am providing the lyrics of this uplifting song by the combine. Sahir really had a way with words (my my! what an astounding revelation!:-). His ability to say things in a very clean, simple and direct manner is one of the many reasons I am inordinately fond of him. This is a fine, bouncy tune and deceptively easy and it is right up Rafi-Sahab's alley and he, needless to say, does a marvellous job. I don't recall a line and there may also be some other mistakes. For some inexplicable reason, the name of the film too escapes me at this moment. As always, repair jobs most welcome. (I hope this isn't already in the ITRANS library) Phillum: ?? One small correction - "usurping bongs" unfortunately use both Dutta and Datta (as well as Dutt - as in late Utpal Dutt) - the word means given or conferred - I suspect the surname is like the conferred "Roy". -- %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Siddharth Dasgupta (sdg@wag.caltech.edu) (818) 395-2725 FAX (818) 585-0918 Materials & Molecular Simulation Center 139-74, Beckman Institute, CALTECH, Pasadena, CA 91125 %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
