Ashok (ADHARESHWAR@worldbank.org) replied: > The Encyclopaedia on Indian films did not list "Balak > SaratChandra" as one of Salil's movies. -- Is this a fact, a question, a statement, or an accusation? In which style should one reply to this? Let's see how the others would have replied to this.. (What follows is just fiction. No offense meant). -- Preetham Gopalaswamy: Yes, that seems to be a overlook on the part of the compilers. Here is what I know: Movie : Balak Saratchandra Year : 1976 Actors : ?? Singers : K.J.Yesudas, Sabita Choudhary Music : Salil Choudhary Director: Jayanta Saha Snehal B. Oza: I am afraid, we are out of sync here. Ikram Ahmed Khan: Since no one has answered this, it means no one knows the answer or every one was busy with their holiday parties! Talking about Salil's using singers in non-native language movies, now we know where A.R.Rahman learnt all his tricks! :) Vandana Venkatesan: Interesting! Is there a Tamil version of this song too? Pradeep Dubey: The Salil Headquarters desperately needs his Bengali fans! Apply now! Rajan Parrikar: Note: I am writing about Salil's Hindi movies only (that should disarm all the Babu Moshais). Our pal Sal's Hindi scores are enough to convince anyone what a genius composer he was. Anurag Shankar: On a related note, ISB needs some volunteers to maintain the new Bengali docs.. Vish Krishnan: Salil joins Roshan, Khaiyaam, Sudhir Phadke, Anil Biswas in the team of MDs who made their wives sing under their baton. Salil made Sabita sing in Hindi, Bengali, and Malayalam. But then I digress. Anand Natrajan (Nuts): Mea Culpa! (If I was wrong, that is!) The nuts in my head are getting a bit rusty! (: Vinod Jairaj: Someone wrote about 'maanasa maine'. That song is controversial. The fans of SJ claim that Salil plagiarised it from SJ. While Salil fans say that it is not. Of course, the fans of SJ are right!!! Ketan Dholakia: Salil doesn't need SJ's tunes! Didn't someone accuse SDB also of doing the same? It was "ae dil-e-awara chal" (SDB) from "aawara hoon, aawara" (SJ), wasn't it? Ha! "ai dil-e-awaara chal" was from Vidya (1948) and not from Dr. Vidya (1962) as originally posted. And "Aawara" came in 1951! So there! Didn't I say SDB is the best? Roopa: What?? Salil copying from SJ??!! Neeraj Deshmukh: Hota hai! hota hai! :-) Let's see if anyone remembers the song that Bappi Lahiri based on one of Salil's tunes. :-) Sreenivas Paruchuri: It is wrong to jump and come to quick conclusions when writing about copying/lifing/plagiarism of tunes within Indian films. Kalyan Kolachala: Predictions for 1996: Someone will 'discover' that one of Salil's songs was based on someone's tune, and the whole "plagiarism vs. inspiration" thread will have a rerun. Neeraj Malhotra: Ye kaise chakkar pe chakkar aa rahe hai? I still haven't got an answer to my initial question.. Anyway, Surjit, using your sources, can you help us out here? Surjit Singh: Yes, the list in the Encyclopaedia did not have "Balak Saratchandra". Let's see how many movies of Salil the 'kids' can come up with. Neha Desai: Check the RMIM Automailer for the updated list of Salil's movies. Send a mail to Prince at pkohli@prism for article number 130. Kuntal Daftary: Encyclopaedia is no substitute for Experience, and vice versa. Pure logic! BTW, don't use my full name, call me drafty. Kuntal Shah: Don't call me that! I am not him! I am the bad Kuntal, or is it the good one.. I am confused. Anyway, "burrey bhi hum, bhaley bhi hum, samajhiyo na kisse se kum, hamara naam, hai Kuntal baabu!" Preeti Ranjan Panda: Talking of singers, under Salil, Mukesh's voice did sound better than what it normally was. Shailesh Phansalkar: you seem to be a stauch SJ hater. I don't hate them but I don't particularly like them either. BTW, I was a non-believer of film songs, until I discovered Salil! Abhay Avachat: If that Salil-SJ info is right, then the foundation of the hypothesis that Any_MD >> SJ is really shaky ! :-) U.V.Ravindra: Ham geeta-o-quraan-o-bible pe haath rakkar kahte hai ki, humne jo kuchh bhi likha, vo sach tha aur sach ki sivaa kuch nahi tha! Ramesh Hariharan: Mai baap log! Ladneka nahin! Vandana Sharma: Jab hum ye suhaani shaam.. ye dhalte din.. ye thandi hawa ki khushboo ka lutf uTa rahe the.. ye toofaan kahaan se aa gayaa..? Shashikant Joshi (Pintu Diwana): Arrey yaar! Take is easy. It is like saying, if one can't find a particular word in the abridged edition of Webster's Dict. then there is no such word in English. Samiuddin Mohammed: "Apni to har aah ek toofaan haiN.. Uparvaala (Dhareshwar) jaankar anjaan haiN..!" :-) :-) Ashok Dhareshwar: Flashing that incomplete and inconsistent Encyclopaedia in support of your argument was a bad idea. The list in that did not have many of Salil's Malayalam movies like "Madanolsavam", "Pratheeksha", "Raasaleela", "Raagam", and "Thulaavarsham". They did not include Mukesh in the biography section, that does not mean Mukesh didn't exist for us! That book is not worth being called an "Encyclopaedia". It is an "Encyclopaedia in the making". RMIM's verdict: Dump the encyclopaedia! Irfan Moinuddin: Hai! na shole meiN yeh karishma na barq meiN yeh ada koee batao ki woh shoKH-e-tund_KHoo kya hai ? - Ghalib [ barq = lightning, tund = sharp/angry, KHoo = behavior ] -- Apologies if you found or did not find your name here. Have fun! -- bye satish
