It was a great concert that no one should miss. All singers were at their best and performed many crowd pleasing numbers. Besides Udit and Kavita, two other singers were there: Deepa Narayan (his wife), and Nayan Rathod. Both were also good. The MC, Madhav Moghe was also pretty good. Quickly, here's an overview of the Calgary concert. For those of you who do not want to know which numbers were performed, I'd suggest that you not read ahead. The concert began with Nayan Rathod yodelling and imitating Kishore Kumar's typical concert introductions with the song "Mere Dada Dadion... Aap Sab Ko Kishore Kumar Ka Namaskar. . . ". He has very nice voice and has a lot of potential. His next song was another KK song followed by "Ek Ho Gaye Hum Aur Tum" from "Bombay". Then Kavita Krishnamurthy came on stage. She was very gracious, polite, and when people would yell requests from the audience, she would graciously fulfill them. Her voice sounded much more majestic than it does when listening to her on a recording. The numbers she performed were: 1) Allah Tere Naam Eeshwar Tero Naam (A devotion song) 2) Pyar Hua Chup Ke Se (1942-A Love Story) (She gave respect to R.D. Burman before singing this and explained that after a lot of hard work, she received her first award for this song). 3) O Yara Dil Lagana (Agnisakshi) She then did a medley of old songs. She explained this is her way of paying respect to the legends of Indian Music. This medley was as follows: 1) Toofan Mein (Kannan Devi) 2) Woh Paas Rahe (Suraiya) 3) A song of Shamshad Begum's 4) A song of Noorjehan's 5) Jaane Kya Maine Kahe (Geeta Bali) 6) Lag Jaa Gale (Lata) 7) Chura Liya He Tum Ne (Asha) After many people yelling Hawa Hawaii, she enthusiastically sang "Hawa Hawaii" from "Mr. India". Nayan Rathod and her then sang some beautiful duets: 1) Rim Jhim Rim Jhim (1942) 2) Tu Hi Re (Bombay) Both of them then left the stage and Udit Narayan made his grand entrance with lots of cheers as he began singing "Papa Kehte Hain" from Qyamat Se Qyamat Tak. The songs that followed were: 1) Phoolan Sa Chehra Tera (Anari) 2) Pehla Nasha (Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar) 3) Aisa Zakham Diya Hai (Akele Hum Akele Tum) 4) Kya Karen Kya Na Karen (Rangeela) 5) Main hoon aashiq, ashiq awara (Ashiq Awara) Throughout his items, he was very jovial, dancing a lot. His actions were at times funny and odd, but I enjoyed because it made him unique and different from other musicians I've seen. Madhav Moghe then came and did various imitations of famous actors. He was very good and mentioned that he dubbed Raj Kumar's dialogues in "Jawab". This was followed by an intermission. After intermission, Nayan Rathod came on stage and sang a song which I hadn't heard of before and I wasn't able to catch the title. Kavita came on stage again and sang the following: 1) Pehla Pyar ka Pehla Gham (Papa Kehte Hain) 2) Mere Piya Ghar Aya Au Ramji (Yaarana) Then Udit came on stage and the both of them did some very popular duets: 1) Kuchi Kuchi Rakkamma (Bombay) 2) A new song from the movie "Bhairavi" 3) Tu Cheez Badi Hain Mast Mast (Mohra) There duets were then cut short because some drunk man in the audience kept on yelling for Kavita to sing "O Piya O Piya" from "Agnisakshi". She was very polite and obliged singing the duet with Nayan Rathod. Finally, Udit ended the evening with three songs that just captured the audience: 1) Ghar Se Nikhalte Hi (Papa Kehte Hain) 2) Jaadu Teri Nazar (Darr) Everyone was so happy when he sang this song. So many people were just screaming with excitement. 3) Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna (DDLJ) The last song was very well done and he called his wife Deepa Narayan to come up and sing with him. Her voice is very good as well. Nayan Rathod also came on stage and all three of them were dancing a lot and the audience was very involved with clapping and screaming in this song. Overall, this concert was the best I have been to since the Nitin Mukesh concert last year. I enjoyed the fact that all song selections were good. In addition, my entire family and I were impressed by the fact that this is the first Indian concert that started on time. The concert lasted from about 8:00 to 11:40 with a 20 min. intermission. Udit and Kavita both expressed regret that they were not able to sing as many songs as people were requesting due to time limitations, but then again I must give them credit for choosing very popular songs from a wide list of songs these two have to their credit. My only disappointments were that Aditya Narayan was not there, Deepa and Udit didn't sing "Raja Ko Rani Se" from "Akele Hum Akele Tum", and that the last item should have been reserved for Udit and Kavita since the concert was titled "Udit and Kavita". However, the concert was extremely good and I suggest that if it is coming to your area, it is a must see for filmi music lovers.
