For example, for the clue palkon ke, satrange deepak ban baithe, aansoo ke jhaalar the correct answer would be the song kahaan se aaye badra ho, ghulta jaaye kajra To participate, DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS ON THE NET. E-mail them to me at nuts@virginia.edu. I will "grade" them and post the results on August 30th. RJGKs nowadays are set to a certain theme - usually a singer or MD, though other themes are also possible. RMIM is rife with supporters of Kishore Kumar or Rafi, or fans of the Burmans or Naushad. I am of the opinion that the lesser-known singers do not get much air (or netspace) and hence my espousal of their cause. (: The golden voice of K. J. Yesudas has not received its due. So, afficionados extraordinaire, presenting... K. J. YESUDAS!!! CLUES ----- There are 17 regular questions. And 3 tie-breaker questions. The winner is the one who scores the maximum in the regular questions. In the event of a tie, the tie-breaker questions will be considered. In the event of a tie there too, I might consider earlier responses or may decide that, what the hell, let there be joint winners! (: The answers are songs which could be solos, duets or trios or whatever. But the lines presented in the clue will definitely have been sung by Yesudas. In departure from previous RJGKs, RJGK-12 will be a two-step quiz. There will be two sets of clues provided. Read on... REMINDER -------- PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS ON THE NET. EMAIL THEM TO ME AT: nuts@virginia.edu FEATURES OF RJGK-12 ------------------- With RJGK-12 I hope to introduce a new format to the quizzes. Or at least pave the way for more experimentation with newer formats. I'd appreciate your comments and suggestions with your answers. New features (not previously present in RJGKs) are: 1. The clues are punctuated. Often I have found myself stumped over a line which I knew I had seen before but I couldn't break down. For example, instead of getting tu jo mere sur mein sur mila de to zindagi ho jaaye safal you'll have tu jo mere sur mein, sur mila de to zindagi, ho jaaye safal 2. I have tried to present relatively simple clues for quite a few songs. Humming the tune at work or play should often give an answer. While we do want one winner to this quiz, I want you all to enjoy participating. My aim is not to be one-up on you but to let you discover Yesudas. 3. Too many questions make a tiresome quiz. And my grading a headache. (: 4. Now comes the most drastic of my changes. This will be a two-step quiz. Each participant is allowed TWO entries. After you see this post (dated August 1st) on your server, you can start cracking the quiz. Attempt as many answers as you can. On August 12th, I will post a second set of clues to the _same_ songs. You can send in another set of answers after that! The first set of clues are as all RJGK clues have been - a few lines from the song. The second set of clues could be anything that I feel will make life easier. It could be the name of the actors/actresses or the name of the MD or the film, or the situation in the film, or a few more lines from the song - anything goes! Correct answers got from the first clue merit 1 point each. Those got from the second clue merit 0.75 (fractions!) point each. Wrong answers, of course, get the infamous zot. Answers in the second mail automatically update answers given in the first mail unless they are the same as the first or they are left blank. All answers got after I make my second post count as second mails - so please handle the lag at your site if any. The quiz closes on August 24th. No answers will be accepted after that. Oh yeah, friends and family mine, you cannot take part. Pea, Hazel, Erika, Beatle, sorry, but that's the way it is... Few singers in Indian music inspire as much awe for supreme level of accomplishment on the classical and light side as the maestro Padmashree K. J. Yesudas. The best film singer award in 1993 for the Malayalam movie 'Soapanam' made him the first singer to get the national award four years in a row; after 'His Highness Abdullah' (1990), 'Bharatam' (1991) and 'Sargam' (1992). He has already recorded more than 4000 songs for films in Malayalam, Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Gujarati, Telugu and Bengali. The first of his many national awards was for the best singer in 1972. For his outstanding contribution to classical music, the President of India bestowed the Padmashree in 1984. Earlier in 1976 he won the coveted 'Sur Shringar' award. His early musical influence was his father Agasthyan Joseph, a singer of devotional music in the church. Young Yesudas was a serious Mohammed Rafi fan, admiring tunes from 'Baiju Bawra' and 'Dulari' among other gems. Training in classical music was under Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar, his guru, guide and godfather. His initial fame as a film singer has made his rise to the status of a top-class classical singer slow and fraught with skepticism. In 1991, after a classical concert at the celebrated Sahitya Akademi, the great Balamurali Krishna himself stepped to up the stage and gave him the title 'Sangeetaratna', placing him among the classical elite. Inspite of the various accolades and awards that have embellished his career, in person Yesudas remains extremely humble, direct and lovable. A teetotaller, non-smoker and with a down-to-earth nature, words used to describe him were also apt for another jewel of Indian music: Mohammed Rafi. These two singers embody the confluence of a very lovable personality with a divine voice; their careers have been motivated not by money or other personal gains, but by eagerness to discover the various waves of the ocean of music. His soul-stirring voice lends itself admirably to devotional renditions inducing a tranquil state of mind revealing the universality of worship, timeless beauty of bliss and the oneness of prayer. Hindi film music fans will remember him for the many numbers he has rendered in movies like 'Chitchor' and 'Saawan Ko Aane Do'. Blessed with a voice that can only be described as mellifluous, Yesudas' music has given us a great deal of joy over the years and one anticipates more gems from the master in the future.
