For those of you who have joined us recently, RJGK is a quiz in which the clues are lines, both complete and incomplete, from some part of the song, and all you have to do is guess the song. eg. For the clue "Chumme ke badle mein kya doge bolo to" the correct answer would be the song "Jumma Chumma de de" (Hum). What's important and to be kept in mind is : ** Do NOT post your answers on the net. Email them to Ramesh at ** ** hariharn@phoenix.princeton.edu by Friday, December 16th.** The originator of the idea of such a quiz on the net was Samiuddin Mohammed and it was he who posted the first few. Abhay Avachat, who compiled RJGK-3 had the great idea that each RJGK be set to a certain theme. Hence, RJGK-3 was a Mohammed Rafi special, while RJGK-4, compiled by Vivek Vohra, was a Kishore Kumar special. The theme of RJGK-5 was Duets, compiled by Samiuddin Mohammed, RJGK-6, a Lata Mangeshkar special, was compiled by JG, while RJGK-7, a Mukesh special, was conducted by Preetham Gopalaswamy and Rajan Parrikar. RJGK-8, was compiled by Samiuddin Mohammed, and was dedicated to R.D.Burman, RJGK-9 was a Gulzar special brought to us by Ashish Bokil and Sandeep Joshi. RJGK-10 was an Asha special conducted by Renu Thamma, RJGK-11 was on S.D.Burman conducted by Ketan Dholakia, and RJGK-12 was dedicated to Yesudas and compiled by Nuts. RJGK-13 was on 'Bhoole Bisre Geet' and conducted by Srinath Varadarajan Ekkad, RGJK-14 was a Naushad special brought to us by Ajay Nerurkar and finally RJGK-15 was a Laxmikanth-Pyarelal special compiled by Renu and Sandeep. (thanks to them .. I didn't have to write all this stuff again) :-) ................................................................................ Manna Dey --------- During the golden era of music, when a song required a high level of vocal flexibility and classical punch, the natural choice was Manna Dey. Although the number of songs sung by him is far less than the big three (Mukesh, Rafi and KK), most of his songs have been gems that retain a certain sparkle inspite of the passage of time. Possibly due to the high level of maturity in his voice, Manna was often chosen for the off-mainstream songs. A few examples are : songs with philosophical lyrics (Nadiya chale re chale re dhara from Safar), songs sung for an old man (Oh meri zohra jabeen from Waqt) and semiclassical songs (Sur na saje from Basant Bahar), a category that he easily ruled due to a strong training in hindustani music. He has also proved his mettle in singing more standard types of songs: romantic (Dil ki girah khol do from Navrang), fun loving (Dil ka haal sune dil wala from Shri 420) and sad (Kasme vaade pyaar wafa from Upkaar). He never regularly teamed up with any one music director or actor (like Mukesh did with RK and Rafi did with Dilip Kumar), perhaps explaining why he never made it very big. Now, nearly fifty years after his debut in film music, it's disappointing that only the people who follow old film music more closely immediately identify and appreciate the unique freshness that Manna Dey poured into his songs. It's shocking to hear a veteran like Asha Bhosale claim in a recent post-concert interview that Lata and herself are the only ones still alive from the golden era ! Independent of popular opinion, Manna Dey will have a special place in the hearts of his sincere fans ! More information on Manna Dey : his musical influences, favorite music directors, first song, last song, songs in other languages (Bengali), place of birth etc. would be much appreciated. ********************************************************************** Following are the 25 clues, all from songs sung by Manna Dey.
