For those of you who have joined us recently, RJGK is a quiz in which the clues are lines, both complete and incomplete, from some part of the song, and all you have to do is guess the song. eg. For the clue "Chumme ke badle mein kya doge bolo to" the correct answer would be the song "Jumma Chumma de de" (Hum). What's important and to be kept in mind is : ******************************************************************************** Do NOT post your answers on the net. Email them to ANAND KANNAN at anand@system9.unisys.com by Tuesday January 10th, 1995. ******************************************************************************** ################################################################################ As I will be away in India for the vacation, I am requesting the entries to be mailed to Anand, to whom I extend all my gratitude for agreeing to help me out with the 'administrative' aspects of RJGK #17. My trip to India plus the fact that the server here will be down for quite sometime (starting from the 23rd of Dec., 1994) has made me post this edition of RJGK a bit early probably. Keeping in mind the holidays etc. the last date for entries will be the 10th of January 1995. ################################################################################ The originator of the idea of such a quiz on the net was Samiuddin Mohammed and it was he who posted the first few. Abhay Avachat, who compiled RJGK-3 had the great idea that each RJGK be set to a certain theme. Hence, RJGK-3 was a Mohammed Rafi special, while RJGK-4, compiled by Vivek Vohra, was a Kishore Kumar special. The theme of RJGK-5 was Duets, compiled by Samiuddin Mohammed, RJGK-6, a Lata Mangeshkar special, was compiled by JG, while RJGK-7, a Mukesh special, was conducted by Preetham Gopalaswamy and Rajan Parrikar. RJGK-8, was compiled by Samiuddin Mohammed, and was dedicated to R.D.Burman, RJGK-9 was a Gulzar special brought to us by Ashish Bokil and Sandeep Joshi. RJGK-10 was an Asha special conducted by Renu Thamma, RJGK-11 was on S.D.Burman conducted by Ketan Dholakia, and RJGK-12 was dedicated to Yesudas and compiled by Nuts. RJGK-13 was on 'Bhoole Bisre Geet' and conducted by Srinath Varadarajan Ekkad, RGJK-14 was a Naushad special brought to us by Ajay Nerurkar, RJGK-15 was a Laxmikanth-Pyarelal special compiled by Renu and Sandeep and, finally RJGK-16 was a Manna Dey special compiled by Ramesh Hariharan. (thanks to them .. I didn't have to write all this stuff again) - (Why call Bhappi Lahiri a plagiarist, I am no exception too !!!!) ................................................................................ Hemant Kumar ------------ Picture a soft and sober Dev Anand crooning love songs to his soulmate in Patita, a sharaarati Biswajeet pataaoing Waheeda in Bees Saal Baad, a gawky (no flames please) Pradip Kumar enchanting his heroine in Nagin. Don't these conjure up images of a multi-faceted singer, a man of many moods and multiple abilities, able to suit the situation and the hero, and yet maintaining his unique style? Hemant Kumar, a shining gem in the Hindi and Bengali musical firmament, a man who was a musical virtuoso. The fifties, dominated by C.Ramchandra, Naushad, Pankaj Mullick, etc. saw Hemant Kumar rise to great heights, both as a music director and as a singer. At a time, when the likes of Rafi, Mukesh, and Talat were ruling the roost, Hemant Kumar set a unique place for himself in Hindi film music. When Talat was the ghazal king, Mukesh was the king of pathos, Rafi and Manna Dey were the delight of the directors who relied on classical music for their scores, Hemant Kumar it was, who provided a new angle, a new facet to Hindi music, that of the simple, yet rich, folk music of rural India, more specifically, rural Bengal. Together with Sachin Dev Burman, he created waves in Indian cinema with the flavour of folk music. His compositions are to this day, a traditionalist's dream, and the common man's tunes. Well versed in both Rabindra Sangeet and Hindustani classical music, Hemant Kumar Mukherjee provided the listener with moments of pristine listening pleasure. I donot have any specific details about his life and career, and would greatly appreciate any details provided by netgurus in this regard. I hope that this RJGK generates sufficient interest amongst all of you to delve deep into the recesses of your memory and other sources to come out with more info on Hemant Kumar. Following are the clues, for songs sung by Hemant Kumar. Good luck !! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Karke jatan aayaa man mein lagan laaya Ankhiyon mein darshan pyaas God knows how many times the 'she-cobra' theme has been hashed and re- hashed on the Indian celluloid. Lata goes 'aaaaa' in the first anthraa of this song, while Hemant Kumar sings both the anthraas. 20. Jharnaa keh rahaa hai Mere dil ki daastaan Meri pyaas lekar chal rahi hain Mastiyaan The movie is a bit 'fog'gy, but the music by Hemant Kumar is definitely catchy. 21.
