For those of you who have joined us recently, "Rmim"-Jhim Geeton Ki or RJGK is a quiz in which the clues are lines (which may not be complete) from somewhere in the middle of a song, and all you have to do is guess the song. Eg: For the clue ho.. jaake babul se nazaren milaaoon kaise ghara jaaon kaise the correct answer would be "Laaga Chunari mein Daag " which incidentally is based on Raag Bhairavi The most important thing to remember : ************************************************************************* *** Do not post your answers on the net. Email them to KEDAR NAPHADE *** *** at ksn2@lehigh.edu by March 15th, 1995 *** ************************************************************************* ---------- ABOUT RJGK ---------- The first RJGK was posted on Rmim by Sami Mohammed on July 4, 1993. Since then, 17 more quizzes have been conducted on the net by various Rmimers. The second quiz in the series was conducted by Angela Singh. Abhay Avachat, who compiled RJGK 3 had the great idea that each RJGK be set to a certain theme and dedicated it to Mohammed Rafi. Since then, each RJGK has been set to a particular theme - the more recent ones being RJGK 17 on Hemant Kumar by Ambrish Sundaram and RJGK 18 on the BigB by Rahul herwadkar and Ajay Divekar. Al l RJGK's can be found on Sami's homepage : http://www.lehigh.edu/sm0e/public/www-data/rjgk.html ............................................................................... -------------- ABOUT RJGK #19 -------------- The average listener and admirer of golden oldies from Hindi films has been generally apathetic to Indian Classical music. Yet paradoxically some of the most moving, soul-pleasing *and* popular songs from Hindi films are based on classical music. I have several friends, who remeber a prototypical film song from every raag to help the raag-recognition process. I hope this RJGK provides to them some more songs for thought, and increases or creates interest in classical music among other fans of filmi music. The hints with the clues for this quiz contain the name of the raag besides some other comments. I do realize that this may be an unfair advantage to those amongst you who know the raags ... however, most songs I have picked up are quite well known and I have tried to give additional hints wherever possible. I have roughly organized the order of this quiz according to the time of the day at which the corresponding raags are sung ... starting with Ahir Bhairav for dawn, and proceeding onwards ending with malhar, darbari, and bhairavi for late night. The quiz contains 24 clues and two tie breakers and includes songs from about as many Raags. It is possible that I may have wrongly ordered some of the raags for which I am not sure about the timings. Feel free to send me any corrections ... about the raag, timing, lyrics or anything ... ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Thanks to Bhavin Doshi (bhd2@lehigh.edu) and M.James (jam7@lehigh.edu) who gave me free access to their cassette collections, and helped me get out he seco nd version of this quiz asap in the process foregoing the pleasure of attempting to answer it. So without further ado, let us get down to the clues ! I hope that this is not too easy or too difficult. ---- > ------ > ----- > ---- Clues Start Here : -- > ----- > ----- > --- > - DONT POST YOUR ANSWERS ON THE NET. MAIL THEM TO ksn2@lehigh.edu by March 15th. 1. bhor bhii aas kii kiran naa laayI Raag Ahir-Bhairav .. the break of dawn.. 2. ek pal hai milanaa ek pal bichha.Danaa duniyaa hai do din kaa melaa It is debatable whether this is in Megh or Madhmaat Saarang.. Somehow I would feel more inclined towards Madhmaat Saarang. But i would leave this open for debate 3. Tootaa huaa dil, nahii hu.n mein terii muhobbat ke kaabil Inspite of the slight use of the shudhha dhaivat, in my opinion, one could make a case (though a bit shaky) for this song to be based on Raag Jaunpuri 4. Kaise dil behele, hasanaa chaahuun, ronaa aaye This song is very interesting. The base raag is rageshri with shuddha nishaad.. but the interludes have elements of raags lalit, vibhaas, and the stanza from which the above lines are taken has an aalaap based on charukeshi. 5. Nain bahe re gangaa more phir bhi man hai pyaasa Raag PaTadeep... though interludes are a huge contrast ... Music by SD 6. shabnam bhi roe main voh paasabaan hun aise jahaan se kyon hum dil lagaaye A while ago there was a tiff on the net (I do not remember whether it was rmim or rmic) as to whether this song belongs to Raag Yaman or Yaman-Kalyaan 7. agar dil bhhi hotaa to kyaa baata hoti likhii jaati phir daastaan-e-muhobbat However there is should be no doubt that this relatively modern song is from Raag Yaman-Kalyan 8. kab tak main jiyuungaa yuunnhi khwaabon ke sahaare Mukesh sings again in Raag Yaman 9. sajade tumhaari raaha mein kartii haim kaikashaa.n This was the one song from Pahadi that i did not include in the original version as it is just too easy.. 10. lo ab chale aao ke dum ghhuTataa hai jalaa gaye tanako ... One might say that this is in Shuddha KalyaN .. Devanand film. 11. saath de to dharama kaa chale to dharama par This is a bhajan from Raag Kedar ... same raag as "darshana do ghhanashyaama aaja mori" .. from someone's first film ..? 12. chalo jaao, hato jaao dil kaa daaman chhoDo This Lata-Rafi duet is based on Raag Maaru-Bihaag. 13. ho na kahiin parachaai, jo pardesi ke ghara aayii Did someone knock ? Raag Rageshri seems to be the general consensus on the net, but the song can perhaps also be interpreted as Bihaag. 14. dard bhharaa ye giit kahaan se in hothho.n pe aaye, door kahiin le jaaye This is the same raag as "jaane kahan gaye woh din" (Shivaranjani) The song has two versions -one by Lata and the other by KK 15. kachche dhhaaage se bandhhaaa chalaa aaye This is another one from Shivaranjani.. 16. Gyaan ki to hai siimaa gyaanii gaagar me.n saagar kaa paanii This lata song is based on Raag Gaud-malhar... (Or is it Gaud-saarang ? sometimes I confuse the two; not sure about the raag) 17. gardishe.n hi gardishe.n ab hai mere vaaste ab hai mere vaaste I absolutely stand corrected on this one .. Its Raag Sohini, and not Raag Hindol as I had posted in the earlier version 18. But I did find a Hindol : ek dard-bharii aawaaz hun piyaa der na kar aa mil though one could change the scale and claim that it is in Shivaranjani. 19. motii kaa anamolaka hiiraa miTTii me jaa phisalaa This one is from Raag Megh ... a duet, but the male singer in the song is not the hero in the film. 20. pyaasa hogi nahi.n kyaa yeh poori pyaasaa-pyaasaa gagan pyaasaa-pyaasaa chaman This is from the same raag (Malkauns) as the famous "Mana Tarapat" by Rafi. I had to pick up the lines carefully from the song.. lines without the one word that would give away the song almost immediately 21. chhama chhama naache masta jawaani main lehero.n main khhoyaa jaaoo.n The substitution for duniyaa ke rakhhawaale .. Raag Darbari 22. tuu bhii to taDapaa hogaa man ko banaakar tuufaan ye pyaar kaa man me.n chhupaakar a song from Bhairavi, this tragic RK-Mukesh number never fails to touch me ... 23. No dearth whatsoever of bhairavis: vaaden bhhi kiye tuune khhaii thhii kasam merii old lata classic. 24. Another bhairavii, more recent though : aise ko, roke ab koun bhalaa, dil se jo pyaari hai Lata+Manhar duet I tried to choose rather obscure songs for the tie-breakers...It is no fun if tie breakers are easier than the main quiz. TB1. Hain vaheen raahen vaheen duniyaa magar sunsaan hai Tuu nahi to dil ki saari bastiyaan veeraana hain This is another Rafi song from Malkauns .. TB2 gayaa mana kaa dhheeraja badhhi bekalii bhhii This is a very very old song .. Raag Jogiya. What is distinctive about this song is that there is no other instrument besides the harmonium and the tabla. The tonal quality of the harmonium is just superb.. Another peculiarity is that the beginning bars played on the harmonium are in raag bilaskhani todi, and not in jogiya.
