" RJGK is a unique way to waste good time breaking your head over stray lines from some unknown song. And yet now and then all we rmimers have been doing so despite knowing that there are no prizes at stake nor any minimum gpa requirements. So it won't be a bad guess if we assume its good fun." - A TRUE intoduction by NITIN JOSHI. - A WONDERFUL SERIES introduced by SAMI MOHAMMED. - Setting RJGK to a theme, ABHAY AVACHAT'S GREAT IDEA ! RJGK is also a great way to listen to songs that you would not otherwise, discover new songs and get re-acquainted with your collection ( I know I have found songs that I did not even know I had ). There have been 20 RJGKs so far - the most recent have been on Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Manna Dey, Hemant Kumar, Amitabh Bacchhan, Songs based on Ragas and Shankar-Jaikishan. All RJGKs can be found in Sami's home page: http://www.lehigh.edu/sm0e/public/www-data/rjgk.html The complete list can also be found in the RMIM FAQ : http://www.cc.gatech.edu/grads/k/Prince.Kohli/Prince.Kohli.html ______________________________________________________________________________ Now for the quiz, all you have to do is to guess the song from the given clue. e.g. the clue : Kyuun ho khoye hue sar jhukaaye jaise jaate ho sab kuch lutaye Answer : Babuji dheere chalna - by Geeta Dutt. _______________________________________________________________________________ Pesh hai - GULDASTA. A bouquet of songs, a bouquet of singers and styles. ( All female except the Mangeshkar sisters - Lata, Asha and Usha ) Our film industry has had many singers that had their own style and have left a great mark on the world of 'Filmi Sangeet'. We had a wonderful article on Noorjahan posted by Vish Krishen. A beautiful voice indeed. I possibly could not add any more ! I first heard Suraiyya in Mirza Ghalib. Ghulam Mohammad's music and her rendition of the Ghalib's Ghazals specially 'Rahiye ab aesi jagah' and 'Nukhtacheen hai gham-e-dil' is still ( IMHO ) the best. Her voice sounded very different under different MDs. It is a huskier or heavy voice for Naushad, a slightly softer for Husnlal Bhagatram, and yet a softer tone for Ghulam Mohammad. That is just my observation, but there is a big contrast of a voice in 'Murliwale murli baja ' and the much later 'Nukhtacheen hai gham-e-dil'. Shamshad Begum is another voice from yesteryears which leaves a lasting impression even if you have heard her just once - 'a karari awaaz' of 'kahin aar, kahin paar laga teere nazar' has some wonderful songs under the music direction of Naushad. She gave a very natural rendition to folksy songs such as 'Holi aayi re Kanhayee holi aayi re' and 'O gaadiwale gaadi dheere haank re'. Geeta Dutt - A versatile singer full of emotions. She sang ' Mera sunder sapna beet gaya' with as much pain as 'Mera naam chin chin chu' with masti & then the tender Geeta Dutt of 'Meri Jaan, mujhe jaan na kaho meri jaan' from Anubhav. We lost her a bit too soon. ( A future RJGK perhaps - any takers ? ) I have not read much on Mubarak Begum, it would be nice if someone could shed some light on her. She does have a way with ghazals. Suman Kalyanpur was another fresh voice of 60s and was quite popular for almost a decade. Everyone fell in love with Vani Jairam's 'Bol re papihara' but we did not hear much from her. Hemlata, Sulakshana Pandit, Preeti Sagar were other talented singers that have a very few but lovely songs. Starting in late 70s, we heard from singers like Nadia Hasan, Usha Uthap, Kavita Krishnamurti & Alisha Chinnoy's first in Mr. India, Anuradha Paudwal, Sapna Mukherjee, Alka Yagnik and the list goes on. I hope you will enjoy listening to a variety of singers as much as I have while collecting these songs. Let me also clarify that I am a female too with an odd name of Neeraj.
