I have enjoyed the way the quiz exposes one to great music and great poetry in a *thematic* fashion. There are a total of 31 clues for 31 diffrent songs (no hanky-panky about more than one clue for the same song :-) But I did indulge in some hanky-panky with more-than-one-song-from-the-same-movie-kind-of-thing! I’ll hint at a couple of the *well-featured* movies here: ==>There’s this Dilip Kumar landmark movie where he plays the title role (vah!vah! kyaa hintuvaa hai! Mughal-e-Azam? Aray nahiN janaab, usmeiN to Shakeel Badayuni ke gaane tHe)...this one had a previous version starring Saigal in the title role (I think). ==>Then there’s the Madhubala starrer with these two sisters falling for the male-lead-who-has-a-sissy-face, nonetheless with an album-ful of Sahir-gems with Roshan. AND, to salute the efforts of Sami Mohammed (once again, taaliyaaN!!!) - the grandfather of RJGK (he started it and has managed to keep the enthu level up enough to rope in newcomers like me! (I wonder if he’s regretting that now!) :-), the tie-breaker rule has been CHANGED for this quiz: There are NO TIE-BREAKER-CLUES. In the case of two or more entries with the same # of correct answers, the entry that comes to me first will be put ahead of latter such entries...this process would basically reward accuracy *with* speed. So, I shall still anxiously await all 100 entries :-) in the next week, and post the results around 5/17/95. ********************************************************************* Rmim-Jhim GeetoN Ki # 22 SAHIR ********************************************************************* You can find the first 21 RJGKs on Sami Mohammed's home page at URL address: http://www.lehigh.edu/sm0e/public/www-data/rjgk.html RJGK 22 is based on the filmi-shayari of *Padma Shri* SAHIR LUDHIANVI - the lyricist who gave us loads of Golden Greats circa 1949-1980. He was very fond of ‘ham-radeef’ and ‘ham-tarannum’ ghazals: meaning two or more separate ghazals (in the same movie) with the same or similar rhymes and/or meters respectively. The quiz is designed in an attempt to re-familiarize Rmimers with 31 Sahir-creations, (the earliest from 1951 and the latest from the mid-70s)these are some of my fav. songs...hopefully they are some of your fav.songs too! (we’ll see) When you crack a given clue, I urge you to enjoy the poetry that makes the body of the song...I think you will agree that each one is a gem from that standpoint, regardless of how *popular* it has been. One last thing: this quiz was beta-tested by Neeraj Malhotra and Ashish Bokil...neither one knew that the the other was also testing - y'kno, a totally 'double-blind' test...agar ab achhee lage to it is becoz they *did* warn me about the clues being tough, and were proved right eventually, abhi bhi khunnas aaye to aapki jootiyaaN sar-aaNkhoN par! They both tried to be helpful in making this quiz friendlier than it's beta-version...but I didn’t listen enough, sorry guys! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Now, some general clues for the whole quiz (these *just-might* make it easier to get to the answers): * 9 Music Directors are featured: in the ascending order of frequency, they are: Chitragupta, O.P. Nayyar, Jaidev, Khaiyyam, Madan Mohan, Ravi, N. Dutta, Roshan and S.D. Burman, the last two have the lions’ share in this list: a total of 18/31 songs between them (Sami abhi to khush?!!) * Sahir is cosidered by most of his fans (that includes some apparant Gulzar-fans as well :), to be the Crowned King of filmi-qawwalis: ek se baD kar ek chuneeNdaa sheyr, with a peculiar dash of non-Urdu couplets here and there.And Roshan, IMHO, is a master of the *traditional* melody-rhythm format of Qawwalis starting with a Sheyr-e-Ibtedaa followed by a sort of madhya-laya cheez and going onto a faster portion where the rhythm is played-with a bit more and where very often a *different* refrain is interspersed with some reference-sheyrs...a lot of that is on display here. There’s also a non-Roshan thing in this category, included mainly for its contemporarily relevent poetry. * 25 films are represented here. So, in the 31 clues, there are instances of more than one song from the same movie. See above for more about some well-featured movies. * 17 artists in solos, duets and groups constitute the singers for this list (that includes basically all the major Indian film playback singers of Sahir's time: KK, Rafi, Talat, Hemant, Manna Dey, Mukesh, Lata, Asha, Geeta Dutt, and others: one of the ‘others’ is Mubarak Begum). *The punctuations, and sometimes even the way a word is spelled here, usually mimicks the way the melody goes in those lines. So, when you are reading these lines, try taking pauses where the commas are: that might bring the melody in your mind, and then you can keep singing/humming till you get to the *mukhDa*....and THAT, my dear, is what you're still after!:) So, sharpen your #2s, and heeeeeeeeere's the new-and-improved list: (Best of luck!!) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. *jo taar se niklee hai vo dhun, sab ne suni hai jo saaz pe guzree hai vo ik, dil ko pataa hai The mukhDa follows these lines(that make the first stanza itself)... Sahir talking to the world at large about what he got and what he is giving back to us. The singer has always been loved for a soulful, soft voice in songs like ‘haiN sabse madhur vo geet jinheN ham dard ke sur meiN gaate haiN’ 2. *taAruf rog ho jaaye, to usko bhoolnaa behtar taAlluk bojh ban jaaye, to usko toDnaa achhaa One of those Sahir-Signature-Songs about relationships. 3. *gham aur khushi meiN farq na mehsoos ho jahaaN... Sahir still goes on, broken-heart-n-all. 4. *sehar tak sabkaa hai anjaam jalkar khaq ho jaanaa bhale mehfil meiN koyi shama ya, parwaanaa ho jaaye A soofiyaana kalaam,IMO...talks about love=khudayi itself. I realize now that the above mentioned sheyr may be missing from some cassettes, so let me give you another one from the same track *main jo chali jal jamunaa bharaN nand kau chhoro mohe rok-ke chhaaRo to kyaa bhar laaooN maiN jamunaa se maTkee 5. *jhoolaa dhanak ka, dhire dhire ham jhooleN ambar to kya hai, taaroN ke bhi lab chhooleN masti meiN jhoomeN, aur sabhi gham bhooleN dekheN na peechhay muD ke nigaaheN The Dreamy-Sahir! This is a complete stanza. 6. *rishtoN kaa roop badaltaa hai, buniyaadeN khatm nahiN hoteeN khwaaboN ki aur umaNgoN ki, meeyaadeN khatm nahiN hoteeN The poet's biography. This is one of those ham-radeef ghazals. There’s a great recitation of the title-nazm in this movie. 7. *maine jazbaat nibhaye haiN, usooloN ki jageh... apne armaan piro laayaa hooN, phooloN ki jageh The Martyr-Sahir. This is a form of shayari known as Seharaa...sung at weddings in honor of the people getting married. This is the climactic ghazal in a trilogy of ham-radeef tracks in the movie. 8. *tum jahaanN meri taraf dekh ke ruk jaaoge vahee manzil, meree taqdeer ki manzil hogee I cannot resist but tell you what I have always termed this one: *An Affair of Consensus*! This movie had another Sahir-Signature-Song about the dream of a better future. 9. *ro ro ke inheeN raahoN meiN, khonaa paDaa ik apne ko haNs haNs ke inheeN raahoN meiN, apnaayaa thaa begaane ko Sahir indulging in memories in his loneliness...the couplet makes a complete stanza. KK did the other version. Sahir paired up with Shailendra in this Dev movie. 10. *aaj koyi bandhan na bhaye aaj hai, khul khelan ki Thaanee The song starts after these lines are beutifully *alaap-ed*. But, bakaul Rajinder Krishan - sab chale jaate haiN, kab dard-e-jigar jaataa hai! Once again, this ‘beginning’ may not be in some cassettes so, here’s another couplet from the same song: *madhur milan ki durlabh belaa, yuN hi beet naa jaaye aisee raiyn jo vyarth gavaaNye, jeewan bhar pachhtaaye 11. *seerat ka hai sawaal na soorat ki baat hai ham tum pe mar miTe ye tabeeyat ki baat hai The Wish...inkee ek taraf, unkee ek taraf. Some other great lines from this track go like this: *gau zulm be-hisaab kiyaa is nigaah ne~ ruswaa kiyaa kharaab kiyaa is nigaah ne ik kaam laajawaab kiyaa, is nigaah ne jo tujhko, intekhaab kiyaa is nigaah ne one of those ‘reference-sheyrs’. 12. *dil ke fasaane, dil hi na jaane tum ko sajan, dil ki lagan, kaise bataayeN Kash ke tum hote! (she used to sing this in all her live concerts.) A popular song in an otherwise ‘ok’ set from an early SD movie where it seems he used a lot of the available singers: Rafi, Lata, KK, Manna, Geeta, Shamshad. 13. *tumne jis dil ko baDe pyaar se apnaayaa tha usko shikvoN ka gunehgaar karooN, ya na karooN Tum kaho jo tum chaahtay ho. maiN kar sakooN ye pakkaa nahiN! The other version (a ‘duet’ with this singer basically humming along) is probably more popular...the same mukhDaa. This movie had one Majrooh song in an otherwise Sahir-set. 14. *har gunaah aaj mukaddas hai, farishtoN ki tareh kaaMpte haathoN ko, mil jaane do rishtoN ki tareh Don't you wish! (here this singer sounds a lot better than in his *non-Sahir* songs) This is a B. R. Films’ production with a young Shashi Kapoor. 15. *ishq par naaz kare koyi, to kuchh baat bhi hai husn kaa naaz hi kyaa, husn to Dhal jaataa hai Picture mein characters ke naam(Naaz, Bahaar, Chaand) kis khoobee se shayari meiN laaye haiN saab, marhabaa! From one of the *well-featured* movies. 16. *madad chaahtee hai ye Hawwa ki beTee Yashoda ki hamjins Radha ki beTee Iske baare meiN kuuuuchh nahiN keh saktaa...bahut sachche sawaal haiN! [Hawwa=Eve hamjins=of the same species.] 17. *jag ki na sun, pyaar ki dhun jhoom ke gaa le Basically saying, kuchh bhi ho, tu fiqr mat kar, khush reh aur gaa! 18. *ham saleeqe se, nibhaa deNge jo din baaqi haiN chaah ruswaa naa huyi, dard bhi ruswaa kyooN ho Ye bhi baat vahi hai, *kuchh bhi ho*. This is one of those Suman things where it’s hard to tell her voice/style apart from Lata’s. A recent Pankha Road post pretty much gave away this one...bless his heart! 19. *gar jazbaa-e-mohabbat saadiq ho har dar se muraadeN miltee hain The Secular-Sahir! (they should have played this to the rioters in Bombay, Dec. 6, 1993). Here the singer in #2 is joined by Balbir and chorus. 20. *meree bebasi hai zaahir, meree aah-e-be-asar se kabhi maut bhi jo maaNgi, to na paayi uske dar se Keh rahi hai, tujhe khush karna bahut mushqil hai! From one of the *well-featured* movies. 21. *ravaaN hai chhoTee si kashtee, hawaaoN ke rukh par nadee ke saaz pe, mallaah, geet gaataa hai This couplet is recited in *tarannum* by the male-singer -same guy who sounds better when he sings Sahir. A duet from a Mala Sinha starrer of B. R. Films 22. *ajahooN jo naa bhejyee mohan, taine koyi khabariyaa hojayi hai ik brij ki baalaa, ro ro kar baawariyaa One of those aajaa-ab-to-aajaa type themes, but this one is not just pleading, dhamkee bhi hai! A duet from one of the *well-featured* movies. 23. *jis ghaDi meree, nigaahoN ko teree deed huyi vo ghaDi mere, liye aish ki tamheed huyi Another Wish...is baar sirf inkee. A Nutan starrer. [tamheed=preamble] 24. *sansaar ki har ik besharmee, gurbat ki god(=lap) meiN paltee hai chakloN hi meiN aakar ruktee hai, faaqoN se jo raah nikaltee hai Kuchh aur bahut sachchee baateN. 25. *teree berukhi ke sadqe, meree zindagi ki khushiyaN tu agar isee meiN khush hai, to khushi se kar jafaayeN Selflessness ki intehaa hai ye: kuchh nahiN hone walaa, tab bhi! Mubarak Begum. 26. *jab tak do dil ek na ho leiN dil ki lagee kaa rona kyaa This guy, on the other hand, has a lot more non-Sahir gems as well! Here, he is doing a duet with Asha. ‘Kuchh ho jaaye to baDiyaa, nahiN ho to why whine?’ Not a popular song. There was another movie with a similar title as this one, except that one had a mister in front. 27. *jinkee khatir gham saheN, aur ro ro jaan gawaayeN hai ri kismat unheeN ke mooNh se, deewaane kehlaayeN masti-bhari chheD-chhaaD...the guys lose! Sahir ne ek ghazal likhi tHi jo ‘gazal’ meiN istemaal huyi, us ghazal ka title is film ka title hai. 28. *sapt suran teen graam bansee baaje remember those inter-college festivals? ye gaanaa, if done well, was always a sure winner. 29. *bheegi hawaaon meiN, ThanDi-ThanDi aag hai is haseen aag meiN, tu bhi jal ke dekh le ye zindagi ke geet ki, dhun badal ke dekh le phir nahiN aane kaa ye moment! 30. *hoNT haiN yaa kisi, shaayar ki duaaoN ka jawaab zulf hai yaa kisi saawan ke, talabgaar ka khaab Too-hot-to-handle! (yuk!...I must be getting tired, the phattas are getting worse...just one more...) 31. *ye nayaa daur hai is daur meiN jeene ke liye husn ko husn kaa andaaz badalnaa hogaa A Rafi gem. And, looking at comments about this RJGK so far, you stand a great chance of WINNING even if you do not get all the answers right! _______________________________________________________________________ AN ARTICLE ON SAHIR'S LIFE FOLLOWS: _______________________________________________________________________ 1921: Abdulhayi (later known by his takhallus SAHIR LUDHIANVI) is born to a Jagirdar family in Ludhiana, Punjab. He has several step-mothers, but he is the only child of his father who is one big *aiyaash*. 1934: He is in his early teens when his mother takes the bold step of getting away from that man, forfeiting all claims to the financial assets. Dad sues for child-custody and loses. There are threats that he will make sure Sahir does not live with his mother very long, even if that means taking the child's life. Mom finds friends who keep a close watch on Sahir and don't let him out of sight. Fear and financial deprivation surround the formative years of this young man who did okay in school. 1939: He goes to college, is popular for his *extra-curricular* talents, falls in love with one of his admirers - the daughter of another rich man of Ludhiana's bourgeois society. Poverty and lack of the courage to fight another man-like-his-father bring this affair to it's inevitable sad end, made sadder by the fact that the girl's father pulls strings to get him expelled from college. 1943: Out of college, and by now having finished writing his first serious work *TalkhiyaaN*, Sahir leaves Ludhiana and goes to Lahore to find a publisher who would take it. He does, after two years of getting shuttled here and there. 1945: *TalkhiyaaN* gets published, and now starts a fairly good period for the Shayar Sahir. He is made the editor of Adab-e-Lateef, Shaahkaar, and later Savera - successful urdu magazines. 1949: Sahir leaves Lahore...basically because he has written stuff in *Savera* that the new Pakistan Govt. decides is too inflammatory, and therefore there is a warrant out for his arrest! He comes to Delhi , leaves Delhi in another few months because, as he tells a friend, *Bombay needs me*! And thus starts a most memorable career for one of Bollywood's darling poets - a career that spans 31 years and gives Indian films over 200 Golden Greats - songs, ghazals, nazms that will be hummed to, identified with, and *fought over* :) by generations to come! Sahir is considered a *romantic*: personal romance and the resultant disillusionment, followed by universal romance and the resultant frustration with *the way it is*. He does not mince words, does not sublimate emotions, expresses thoughts clearly and directly. He gets angry and sarcastic, and at the same time he dreams.
