Kedar's leaving for India at the end of the month and this should give him and other RMIMers an extra day to solve the quiz. "Hain sabse madhur woh geet jinhe, hum RJGK me laate hai" !! Sami Mohammed (A Naushad fan).... hoping for a good response. ***** "Rmim"-Jhim Geeton Ki 23: TALAT MEHMOOD ***** Yo RMIM ke bhaio aur baheno, We've had RJGK's dedicated to almost all major singers of the post-Saigal era. Rafi, KK, Manna Dey, Mukesh, Hemant Kumar, Yesudas, Lata and Asha have already had RJGK's dedicated to them. The others were included in the "Guldasta" RJGK on non-Mangeshkar female singers organized by Neeraj. The only singer from the golden era who hadn't featured in a RJGK was Talat Mehmood. So, here's the RJGK on the GHazal king, Talat Mehmood. As promised, I have tried to compile an easy quiz. Do I hear anyone saying "That's what they all say" ?? :-) Well, this time I GUARANTEE IT!! This is the easiest quiz which could be compiled on Talat. Okay, okay.. kuch zyaada bol diya :-) But, I really have put in an effort to ensure that the quiz is easy. And the main incentive behind this is to get a good response. So, all those who (like me) were demanding an easy RJGK, do participate and show your support. Here is this RJGK's slogan: "If the previous RJGK was a tough nut to crack, this RJGK will be cracked by Nuts!!" :-) Yo Nuts, THE Talat fan, are u listening ?? ******************************************************************************* PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS ON THE NET E-MAIL THEM DIRECTLY TO ME AT sm0e@lehigh.edu The DEADLINE for mailing your answers is June 1, 1995, 11:59 PM (Eastern) I will grade the answers and post the results on June 4, 1995. ******************************************************************************* About RJGK: (For those who came in late) RJGK or "Rmim"-Jhim Geeton Ki is a regular quiz series on RMIM. Here's an excerpt from the first RJGK which describes it: _______________________________________________________________________________ OK, so here's how the quiz goes: You don't need to name a singer, actor, lyricist, MD etc. All you have to do is to IDENTIFY the song. The clues given below are lines occuring somewhere in the song (not necessarily the opening stanza or the opening line of any other stanza). Eg: Clue: "Logon ko aatay hain do nazar ham magar........." Ans: This is, as you all must've guessed, part of the song from Sholay. Hence the correct answer would be "Ye dosti hum nahin chhoRengay......" _______________________________________________________________________________ It's as simple as that. But remember the golden rule: PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS ON THE NET. E-mail them directly to me at sm0e@lehigh.edu _______________________________________________________________________________ Acknowledgement: I'd like to thank Anurag Shankar and Navin Kabra for helping me out with this quiz in a unique manner. History of RJGK: The first RJGK was posted on July 4, 1993. The second quiz was posted soon after that by Angela Singh. It was Abhay Avachat's great idea to dedicate each RJGK to a particular theme, and RJGK 3 was a Rafi special. Since then, each RJGK has been dedicated to a particular person/theme. All RJGK's can be accessed thro' my WWW home page. The URL is: http://www.lehigh.edu/sm0e/public/www-data/sm0e.html Indian film music lovers will find a lot of other interesting things there as well. Here is a complete list of all the themes of the RJGK's conducted so far and their organizers: 1. General (Sami Mohammed) 2. General (Angela Singh) 3. Mohammed Rafi (Abhay Avachat) 4. Kishore Kumar (Vivek Vohra) 5. Super Duets (Sami Mohammed) 6. Lata Mangeshkar (JG) 7. Mukesh (Preetham Gopalaswamy and Rajan Parrikar) 8. R.D. Burman (Sami Mohammed) 9. Gulzar (Ashish Bokil and Sandeep Joshi) 10. Asha Bhosale (Renu Thamma) 11. S.D. Burman (Ketan Dholakia and Rajan Parrikar) 12. Yesudas (Nuts) 13. Bhoole Bisre Geet (Srinath Ekkad) 14. Naushad (Ajay Nerurkar) 15. Laxmikanth-Pyarelal (Renu Thamma and Sandeep Joshi) 16. Manna Dey (Ramesh Hariharan) 17. Hemant Kumar (Ambrish Sundaram) 18. Amitabh Bachhan (Ajit Divekar and Rahul Herwadkar) 19. Songs based on Ragas (Kedar Naphade) 20. Shankar Jaikishan (Nitin Joshi) 21. Non-Mangeshkar female singers (Neeraj Malhotra) 22. Sahir Ludhianwi (Guri) The evolution of RJGK: After Abhay introduced the concept of setting each RJGK to a particular theme, Nuts brought about the next major change by introducing a two-tier system. The second phase gave additional clues to complement the lines from songs. This introduced the concept of additional clues in the quizzes, although the two-tier system was not followed due to time limitations. More importantly, Nuts' additional clue system provided an avenue for quiz organizers to download their wisecracks on the unsuspecting participants who almost cried for mercy by the time they reached the last clue ! :-) Kedar's RJGK on raga-based songs provided novel clues in the form of the name of the raga for the erudite among us. But, raga-illiterates like me were left to wander amid the "pahadis" :-) The holy task of compiling a quiz on Naushad Sahab was carried out by Ajay Nerurkar, while Nitin Joshi maintained the ecological balance by conducting one on Shanky-J :-) But, Nitin atoned for his "sin" :-) by coming up with the most beautiful description of RJGK: "RJGK is a unique way to waste good time breaking your head over stray lines of some unknown song. And yet now and then all we rmimers have been doing so despite knowing that there are no prizes at stake nor any minimum gpa requirements. So it won't be a bad guess if we assume its good fun." The first write-up regarding the theme of the RJGK was introduced by Ashish Bokil and Sandeep Joshi who said a few words about Gulzar in their quiz. The trend was continued by Ketan Dholakia and Rajan Parrikar during the SDB quiz, and became a regular feature when Nuts posted a nice article regarding Yesudas in his RJGK. I'm not one to break away from traditions, so here's a small piece on the Ghazal King among playback singers, Talat Mehmood. ********** Talat Mehmood: He's a part of your solitude ********** There are some who need to be comforted by others in times of distress or depression. And then there are some of us who would rather be left alone to mull over the vicissitudes of life; left alone to silently express our indifference to the rest of the world and utter the occasional complaint against the Zindagi Denewala. This is where Talat steps in. No, he doesn't disregard your wish to be left alone; he's in fact a part of your solitude. Talat takes you to a completely different plane altogether. When you want to get away from your daily troubles but find no way to go "Andhe jahan ke andhe raaste, jaaen to jaaen kahan..." he finds you the ideal utopia "jahan GHam ke maare na ho, jhooTi aasha ke taare na ho..". And during those trying times when you don't know what to do, you can trust Talat to understand your situation perfectly "Ai GHam-e-dil kya karun, ai vehshat-e-dil kya karun.." If he can't alleviate your sorrow, he teaches you how to enjoy it "Hain sabse madhur woh jinhe hum dard ke sur me gaate hain.." Else, he shows you how to accept it "Hum dard ke maaron ka itna hi fasaana hai, peene ko sharaab-e-GHam, dil GHam ka nishaana hai.." He even points out the cause "Ashkon ne jo paaya hai, woh geeton ne diya hai.." And when your state of anguish exceeds your tolerance limit, he is right there with you when you utter that little complaint against the Aasmanwala "Bereham aasman, meri manzil bata hai kaha.." When you are about to give up hope, Talat reminds you that "Kabhi hai GHam, kabhi KHushiyaan, yehi to zindagani hai.." Talat Mehmood is called the king of filmi GHazals. There was something in his voice which made it ideal for such form of poetry. A certain smoothness and a flow. Talat's beautiful filmi GHazals include "Phir mujhe deeda-e-tar yaad aaya...", "Dil-e-naadaan tujhe hua kya hai..." "Ashkon ne jo paaya hai woh geeton ne diya hai, is par bhi suna hai ke zamaane ko gila hai..." among many others. Although Talat is best known for his slow numbers, he has quite a few fast-paced songs as well. Who can forget the Salil Chaudary gem "Aankhon me masti sharaab ki...". C.Ramachandra utilized Talat's talents in his unique fashion to give us gems such as "Apni kaho kuchh meri suno..", "Tum apni yaad bhi dil se bhula jaate to achha thha.." and "Tere raaste pe humne ek ghar bana liya hai..". Talat's combos with Madan Mohan and Ghulam Mohammed have a signature of their own. Madan Mohan's "Teri chamakti aankon ke aage ye sitare kuchh bhi nahin..." seems tailor-made for Talat's smooth flowing voice. His Ghazals with this great MD are also memorable. Talat also has quite a few gems with other MD's such as Naushad ("Mera jeevan saathi bichhaR gaya..."), Roshan ("Samaake dil me humaare zara quayaal rahe.."), S.D. Burman ("Bol na bol ae jaanewaale.."), Shanky-J ("Tum to dil ke taar chheRkar...") etc. I hope you all will enjoy the following quiz. Almost all songs are VERY popular, and I hope the RMIMers will find it easy and the participation will be good. _______________________________________________________________________________ The quiz is designed in 4 gears...it becomes progressively difficult with each gear. But the first gear has 20 songs which makes it predominantly easy. Following Guri's example (and my bitter experiences :-) ), I have eliminated the tie-breakers completely. If there is a tie, we'll have joint winners. _______________________________________________________________________________ The golden rule once more: DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS ON THE NET E-MAIL THEM DIRECTLY TO ME AT sm0e@lehigh.edu DEADLINE: June 1, 1995. 11:59 PM (Eastern time) _______________________________________________________________________________ May the best guy/gal win... Looking forward to a good response. Sami Mohammed (A Naushad fan) ****** Clues ****** There might be a typo here and there, but it shouldn't affect the clues.. if you have any difficulty following the pronunciation of the words, e-mail me. 1. Tujhe kya quabar hai O bequabar, teri ek nigaah me hai kya asar Let's begin with a tribute to Sajjad Hussain, one of the senior MD's of the film industry. Madan Mohan had no qualms about borrowing this tune later for one of his Rafi songs. 2. Chaen kaisa jo pehlu me tu hi nahin Maar Daale na dard-e-judaai kahin Footpath ho ya Bazaar, this MD's songs are enjoyed everywhere. 3. ChheR ki baat pe armaaN machal aae honge GHam dikhaawe ki hansi me ubal aae honge We could call this song the "Who's who" of male playback singing, although the KKKlan is bound to protest! :-) 4. Phir tasavvur tere pehlu me biTHa jaaega Phir gaya waqt ghaRi bhar ko palaT aaega Dil behel jaaega, aaquir ko to saudaai hai I'm lonely :-( 5. Dil me rakhlena ise haathon se ye, chhooTe na kahin Geet naazuk hai mera shishe se bhi, TooTe na kahin The picturization of this song might increase your AT&T/MCI bill today! 6. Unka bhi GHam hai, apna bhi GHam hai Ab dil ke bachne ki, umeed kam hai You can ask him to "keep the change" 7. Is tarah barbaad hun, nashaad hun, veeran hun Rehm kar mujh par Khudaya, main bhi ek insaan hun Not only Naushad, but his assistant composed outstanding tunes as well! 8. Dam bhar ke lie meri, duniya me chale aaooooooooooooooooo Tarsi hui aankhon ko, phir shakl dikha jaao Don't let the name of the MD fool you into thinking that he was the greatest. 9. Kyun pyaar me tu naadaan bane, ek paagal ka armaan bane RMIM's favourite song for accusing Salil Chaudary :-) 10. Hanste hi na aa jaaen kahin, aankhon me aansu, aankhon me aansu Bharte hi chhalak jaae na, paimaana kisika Is this love at first sight or what !! 11. Ye ro ro ke kehta hai, TooTa hua dil Nahin hun main teri mohabbat ke quaabil A classic Madan Mohan/Talat combo... what a song!! 12. Dawa se faaida hoga, ke hoga, zehar-e-quaatil se Maraz ki kya dawa hai, ye koi beemar kya jaane RMIMers are *still* trying to understand the first line of this song :-) 13. Yaad rehjaati hai aur waqt guzar jaata hai Phool khilta bhi hai aur khil ke bikhar jaata hai Did someone cry in this movie ? Superb lyrics by Rajinder Krishan! 14. Haathon me mere tera haath rahe Dil se jo nikli hai woh baat rahe Could be the title song for this quiz :-) 15. Be-quata tune mujhse KHushi chheen li Zinda rakha magar zindagi chheen li He seems to be sick of this world.... MD same as that of song #7. 16. Ye sach hai teri mehfil me, mere afsaane kuchh bhi nahin Par dil ki daulat ke aage, duniya ke KHazaane kuchh bhi nahin One of my fav. "Piano songs" composed by one of my fav. MD's. Unlike most songs in this category, you can actually hear the piano playing almost throughout the song. 17. Afsos jali miTTi se mujhe, taqdir ne meri de maara 18. Dekh dekh chakori ka man hua chanchal Chanda ke mukhRe pe badli ka anchal The best part of this duet is that Suraiyya gets to sing only the mukhRa and not the antaras. 19. Hum bad-naseeb pyaar ki rusvaai ban gae KHud hi lagake aag tamaashaai ban gae Ravi sometimes surprises you with his tunes, doesn't he ? A beautiful picturization involving Ashok Kumar and his conscience. 20. Jaakar kahin kho jaaun main, neend aae aur so jaaun main He was sad due to loneliness in song #4... now he wants to go far from the madding crowd. ************* Let's change gears a little here *************** 21. Teri zulph hai, mera haath hai, ke tu aaj bhi mere saath hai The GHazal king sings for the king of GHazals. 24. Chalo jahan quismat le jaae Duniya paraai, log paraae The prelude is also repeated at the end of this song. A very popular TalaTune. 25. Woh bahaaren naachti thi, jhoomti thhi badliyaan Apni quismat yaad aate hi mera ji Dar gaya This movie had a solo each by Rafi, Manna Dey, Talat and Mukesh. I love the Mukesh solo, which is also a GHazal. ********* Shift to the third gear ********* 26. Barbaad ho gaya meri umeed ka chaman Jis Daal par kiya thha basera woh jal gaee This is a GHazal. Use the radif and kaafiya (the rhyming pattern) to crack the clue. 27. Daman pe likhi hai ashkon ne, rudaad humaari sunta ja The music reminds you of the desert. One of my all-time fav. Talat songs. 28. Ai denewaale tune to kuchh bhi kami na ki Ab kisko kya mila ye muquaddar ki baat hai These lines were foisted as the poet Saagar's in the recent movie Saajan. "GHam ki andheri raat me...." was not the only duet in which Talat's voice paled in Rafi's comparison. ********* And finally, the top gear *********** 29. Banaya thha ek aashiaaN do diloN ne Zamaane ki aandhi ne tinke uRaae A typical C.Ramachandra tune. 30. GHuroor hai na shaan hai har ek ada zubaan hai Ye kaisa imtehaan hai ke husn meherbaan hai Was this a "pirated" movie ? I know, the last clues is always the worst :-) Don't forget that the deadline for sending your entry is June 1, 11:59 PM (Eastern time) DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS ON THE NET.
