Here are the results and answers of RJGK 23 which was dedicated to the King of Filmi Ghazals, Talat Mehmood. First of all I'd like to thank Navin Kabra and Anurag Shankar for helping me with this quiz in a "unique manner". Quite a few people wondered what the "unique manner" was, and it was Sats who was the first one to guess the correct answer. The search option on the ISB for Talat Mehmood was switched off for the duration of this quiz. I thought that the quiz would become quite boring if most of the clues could be cracked at the click of a mouse button. Hence, I requested Navin and Anurag to disable this highly useful feature and they were kind enough to oblige. I'm sure this must've nettled quite a few netters, and I thank them for bearing with this temporary inconvenience. My apologies to the non-RJGKers who wanted to use this tool, but couldn't. This was the FIRST AND THE LAST time this feature was disabled to accomodate an RJGK. Anurag pointed out that this is unfair for those not taking part in the quiz, and I agree with him. My thanks again to Navin and Anurag for their cooperation. I must also add that I spent the past week or so in hiding trying to save my life from a certain RJGKer here at Lehigh who was out for my blood for disabling the ISB search feature! :-) A BIG THANK YOU to ALL the participants for making this quiz a BIG SUCCESS. I really didn't expect to receive 36 entries for a quiz on Talat Mehmood. A lot of work goes into organizing an RJGK, but the efforts definitely seem worth it, when the response is so good. So, thank you all once more. Here is a list of all people who made organizing this quiz enjoyable (in the order I recd. the entries). Out of the 36 entries, 25 were received on the LAST day!! As Renu had pointed out in her RJGK on Asha, "Hum desi nahin sudrenge"!! :-) PARTICIPANTS The early bird award goes to: Vivek Khandelwal (vk@cs.purdue.edu) The other participants were: "The husband-wife team of Surjit Singh and Harmesh Kaur" (DUSSH@ttacs1.ttu.edu) Samir (ayachi@scs.carleton.ca) Malini & Balaji (fl849@kanga.ins.cwru.edu) Senthil & Srinivas (RG) (srinivas@cco.caltech.edu) charu Varshne Guri (buxi@ix.netcom.com) Seema Verma and her mom Sridhar Natarajan (sridhar@roblix.eng.ohio-state.edu) Preeti Ranjan Panda and Ashok Dhareshwar Mala Acharya Renu Thamma and Ashish Bokil Satish Subramanian (subraman@cs.umn.edu) U.V.Ravindra and Pavan Kumar Desikan (pkd@cs.duke.edu) Neeraj Malhotra and Prince Kohli (pkohli@cc.gatech.edu) Pradeep Dubey (pradeep@watson.ibm.com) Vidya and Nitin (njoshi@eng.clemson.edu) Nilesh Bhat (sg93bqrd@dunx1.ocs.drexel.edu) Nuts (an4m@opal.cs.virginia.edu) Mohan Rathore Chetan Vinchhi Vineet Gupta Lalitha Atul Thombre (atul@informix.com) Ganti Ravi Sriniwas (gt9723a@prism.gatech.edu) Biju Parameshwaran Manish S Prabhu Prashant Kulkarni Ramki Krishnan (ramki@churchill.ColumbiaSC.NCR.COM) Ravi Rai (rrai@isc.cs.ndsu.nodak.edu) Roopa Dhawan, Janhavi Raut and Ajit Dandekar (ajit@kolmogorov.che.psu.edu) Rajiv Shridhar Atul Gupta and kalyan kolachala Hemlata and Vinay Mishra (vm01@lehigh.edu) Abhay Avachat (abhay.avachat@blr.sni.de) Srini Kaveri (kaveri@citi2.fr) Thanks once more for your participation. I hope I didn't miss anyone. I am especially thankful to those who knew that they hadn't aced the quiz and yet participated. That's the spirit!! Let's move on to the answers, with comments of various RMIMers. I have also included the entire stanza of the clues. Those who missed the clues can give it another shot using the stanza, just for the fun of it. STATS: The number appearing after the song indicates the total number of correct entries. The break-up acc. to music directors was as follows: O.P. Nayyar, Sajjad Hussain, Khaiyyam, Roshan, Nashad and Ravi (1 each). Anil Biswas, C. Ramachandra, S.D.Burman, and Jaidev (2 each). Ghulam Mohammed and Naushad (3 each). Madan Mohan and Salil Chaudary (5 each). And more importantly, Shanky-J (0) :-) The objective was NOT to spread songs evenly according to the number of songs sung under each MD. The attempt was to include as many POPULAR TalaTunes as possible in order to keep the quiz easy. 5 MadMohan songs seem justified, although in retrospect I think C. Ramachandra deserved more. 3 Naushad songs got thro' mainly because he is my fav. MD. "Milte hi aankhen..." is VERY popular, "Duniya badal gaee..." is one of my fav. songs, and "Kaisi haseen aaj bahaaron ki raat hai..." got thro' because of the recent discussion on a Rafi/Talat duet. Don't know why Shanky-J were excluded :-) Well, I included all their popular Talat songs in the write-up and I guess I shud've mentioned that all those songs were excluded from the main quiz. All the songs in the first gear are VERY popular Talat songs. Almost all the clues in this category were 2 complete lines from the beginning of the stanzas, which made them easy. The songs of the second gear are also very popular, but the clues were slightly more difficult. The lines were not the first lines of stanzas, and one of them was a rare stanza (usually not found on audio cassettes). The third gear was slightly more tough... #28 is not a very popular song, but I thought that the clue (Rafi/Talat duet) would help in cracking it. Finally, the top gear was designed to be tough. #29 was posted on the net several months back, and #30 is rarely found on Talat cassettes.. But those of you who have the Jaidev collection must've cracked this easily. The clue was designed to give the name of the movie. The percentage of answers that were correct: I gear: 79.86% (max.= 35 for #4 and #5; min. = 15 for #7) II gear: 61.11% (max. = 28 for #24; min. = 9 for #21) III gear:32.41% (max. = 15 for #27; min. = 9 for #28) IV gear: 23.61% (max. = 11 for #27; min. = 6 for #30) So, the gears did get increasingly difficult. However, there were some surprises for me. #7 and 17 turned out to be more difficult than expected. #21 FAR more difficult than anticipated, and #24 easier than what I thought. #30 was the most difficult, as I had intended it to be. Ashok deserves a special award for predicting the degree of difficulty pretty well. The avg. score of the 36 participants was 20.5/30 (68.33%), which indicates that the quiz wasn't tough on the whole. GENERAL COMMENTS REG. THE QUIZ: **************** Thanks for this relatively easy one. This is the most I have been able to attempt in any RJGK for the past year. Hamse kaa bhooool hui jo yeh sazaa hamka mileee............ itnee tough quiz kyun banaayi masterji???? aise kaise bachche pass honge? The selection was, of course, great...proof of Rajinder Krishan's prowess and your Naushad-bhakti :)...Shakeel follows incidentally only, methinks :) Here're the answers with some comments. I am sick of Talat by now :-) This is the first time I am sending my entry to the RJGK quizz. I was not aware of RMIM till a couple of months ago, and yesterday I found accidentally about this "Talat quizz". AnywaysI am sending the answers as I know of, wish I had more time so that I could answer more than what I could do now. Well, I have 24/30 I believe. That should place me at like the 35th spot in the competition. Double-sigh. Still, this is the best I have ever done in any RJGK, and that's a compliment to you. (: I liked your clueing most of the time, especially since they helped me double-check my answers. Good quiz dude, and hope the participation was high! PS: I was surprised at some of the songs you left out. I know it's your prerogative to pick whatever song you want to, but I thought a Talat-promotional quiz would have some of his other famous songs... (: Here my belated entry. Yaar desi gaaRi hai. Ek do ghante to late ho hi jati hai. The quiz was good, lekin apani gaaRi first gear se aage nahi chali (aakhir `be-car', be-license thahare :-) In any case, I really enjoyed the quiz - it made me recall some songs that I have not heard in ages and some other songs I didn't even know I knew ! I found the clues I could not crack difficult. The rest were easy :) Thanks a lot for giving us this wonderful rim-jhim (see clue #14;). Here is my entry. Had a lot of fun doing this quiz, more so as I was able to crack quite a few! Naushad's and SJ's contribution to Talat's musical success was same (almost none) then WHy Naushad gets TWO songs and SJ big zero.(atleast in my answer sheet, and I could not answer all the clues) Some of the Talat/SJ songs are very famous. (Note: There were 3 Naushad songs in the quiz... Sami) Thanks for the wonderful quiz on the GHazal King. In fact, I had wanted to hold this quiz for sometime now but lack of time prevented me from doing so. I wish I had more time on my hands :( The higher gears were really too much for me :-( But I agree - easy quiz - will sure be a lot of grading work for you to add to your end of quarter TA grading work load :-) I'm new to this whole affair. But I'm excited by this event. I came to know this quiz only two days ago, my fault. But I'm trying my hand. I'm nowhere near the end. I cant understand how you could call this very easy to solve. I object to even 2 clues from the same film, except to highlight something important. (Two from Babul is *not* an example of something important :) ********* End of gen. comments. ANSWERS AND COMMENTS: Comments of different RJGKers reg. the clues are included below: 1. Tujhe kya quabar hai O bequabar, teri ek nigaah me hai kya asar Let's begin with a tribute to Sajjad Hussain, one of the senior MD's of the film industry. Madan Mohan had no qualms about borrowing this tune later for one of his Rafi songs. As quite a few people pointed out, it should've been "nazar" and not "nigaah". The Madan Mohan song mentioned above is the one from Aakhri Daao "Tujhe kya sunaaun mail dilruba, tere saamne mera haal hai..." Song: Ye hawa ye chand ye chandni (30/36) Film: Sangdil Music: Sajjad Hussain Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan 2. Chaen kaisa jo pehlu me tu hi nahin Maar Daale na dard-e-judaai kahin Footpath ho ya Bazaar, this MD's songs are enjoyed everywhere. Stanza: Chaen kaisa jo pehlu me tu hi nahin Maar Daale na dard-e- judaai kahin Rut hasin hai to kya, chandni hai to kya Chandni zulm hai aur judaai sitam Song: Shaam-e-GHam ki quasam aaj GHamgeeN hain hum (32/36) Film: Footpath Music: Khaiyyam Lyrics: Majrooh and Sardar Jafri 3. ChheR ki baat pe armaaN machal aae honge GHam dikhaawe ki hansi me ubal aae honge We could call this song the "Who's who" of male playback singing, although the KKKlan is bound to protest! :-) Rajiv pointed out that Mukesh fans wud protest as well :-) Pradeep felt that the song was sung by "4 play`backward' singers" :-) What did Nuts say ? "Thank God for second clues!!" Stanza: ChheR ki baat pe armaaN machal aae honge GHam dikhaawe ki hansi me ubal aae honge Naam par mere jab aansu nikal aae honge Sar na kaandhe se, saheli ke uTHaaya hoga Song: Hoke majboor mujhe usne bhulaaya hoga (26/36) (it is bhulaya and not bulaya, the latter wud change the meaning completely :-) ) Film: Haqueequat Music: Madan Mohan Lyrics: Kaifi Azmi Other singers: Rafi, Manna Dey and Bhupindra 4. Phir tasavvur tere pehlu me biTHa jaaega Phir gaya waqt ghaRi bhar ko palaT aaega Dil behel jaaega, aaquir ko to saudaai hai I'm lonely :-( Pradeep said: "GET MARRIED and one day you would not be lonely alone :-)" Song: Phir wohi shaam, wohi GHam wohi tanhaai hai (35/36) Film: Jahanara Music: Madan Mohan Lyrics: Rajender Krishan 5. Dil me rakhlena ise haathon se ye, chhooTe na kahin Geet naazuk hai mera shishe se bhi, TooTe na kahin The picturization of this song might increase your AT&T/MCI bill today! Nuts: "*grin* Been there, done that, have the bill." Stanza: Dil me rakhlena ise haathon se ye, chhooTe na kahin Geet naazuk hai mera shishe se bhi, TooTe na kahin Gunguanaaunga yehi, geet main tere lie Song: Jalte hain jiske lie, teri aankhon ke die (35/36) Film: Sujaata Music: S.D. Burman Lyrics: Majrooh 6. Unka bhi GHam hai, apna bhi GHam hai Ab dil ke bachne ki, umeed kam hai You can ask him to "keep the change" Stanza: Unka bhi GHam hai, apna bhi GHam hai Ab dil ke bachne ki, umeed kam hai Ek kashti, sau toofan Song: Jaen to jaen kahan (34) Film: Taxi Driver Music: S.D. Burman Lyrics: Sahir 7. Is tarah barbaad hun, nashaad hun, veeran hun Rehm kar mujh par Khudaya, main bhi ek insaan hun Not only Naushad, but his assistant composed outstanding tunes as well! Should have been "Kis qadar naashaad hoon, barbaad hoon, veeraan hoon" Nilesh: "Its on the tip of my tongue........cant get it out though!!!!!" Welcome to RJGK, Nilesh! :-) Some people got the MD (Ghulam Mohammed), but not the song. I expected more than 15 correct answers for this one, because it is on of the famous GM/Talat combos. Maybe, I should have mentioned that this is a duet. Stanza: Kis qadar naashaad hoon, barbaad hoon, veeraan hoon Rehm kar mujh par Khudaya, main bhi ek insaan hun Maut hi dede ke ab, shikwa zubaan par aa gaya Song: Aasmanwaale teri duniya se ji ghabragaya (duet with Lata) (15) Film: Laila Majnu Music: Ghulam Mohammed Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni 8. Dam bhar ke lie meri, duniya me chale aaooooooooooooooooo Tarsi hui aankhon ko, phir shakl dikha jaao Don't let the name of the MD fool you into thinking that he was the greatest. The name of the MD is Nashad. Chetan told me that "we only needed `u' to tell us who the greatest is!" :-) Prince's comment: Have you seen the RANGROOT this beautiful song is picturised on ? Stanza: Dam bhar ke lie meri, duniya me chale aaooooooooooooooooo Tarsi hui aankhon ko, phir shakl dikha jaao Mujhse to meri bigRi taqdir nahin banti Song: Tasvir banata hun, tasvir nahin banti (35) Film: Baradari Music: Nashad Lyrics: KHumar Barabankvi 9. Kyun pyaar me tu naadaan bane, ek paagal ka armaan bane RMIM's favourite song for accusing Salil Chaudary :-) As Sats said, any regular RMIMer wud've cracked this one using the sub-clue alone! Stanza: Kyun pyaar me tu naadaan bane, ek paagal ka armaan bane Ab lauTke jaane mushkil hai, maine chhoR diya hai jag saara Song: Itna na tujhse tu pyaar baDHa (duet with Lata) (32) Film: Chhaya Music: Salil Chaudary Lyrics: Rajender Krishan 10. Hanste hi na aa jaaen kahin, aankhon me aansu, aankhon me aansu Bharte hi chhalak jaae na, paimaana kisika Is this love at first sight or what !! Song: Milte hi aankhen dil hue diwaana kisika (duet with Shamshad Begum) (32) Film: Babul Music: Naushad Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni 11. Ye ro ro ke kehta hai, TooTa hua dil Nahin hun main teri mohabbat ke quaabil A classic Madan Mohan/Talat combo... what a song!! Stanza: Ye ro ro ke kehta hai, TooTa hua dil Nahin hun main teri mohabbat ke quaabil Mera naam tak apne lab pe na laana Na ji ko jalana, mujhe bhool jaana Song: Meri yaad me tumna aansu bahaana (34) Film: Madhosh Music: Madan Mohan Lyrics: Raja Mehdi Ali Khan 12. Dawa se faaida hoga, ke hoga, zehar-e-quaatil se Maraz ki kya dawa hai, ye koi beemar kya jaane RMIMers are *still* trying to understand the first line of this song :-) Song: Mohabbat hi na jo samjhe, woh zaalim pyaar kya jaane (34) Film: Parchhai Music: C. Ramachandra Lyrics: Noor Lucknavi 13. Yaad rehjaati hai aur waqt guzar jaata hai Phool khilta bhi hai aur khil ke bikhar jaata hai Did someone cry in this movie ? Superb lyrics by Rajinder Krishan! Chetan: "from Dekh Kabira Roya. Another mediocre movie raised to the levels of immortality by the wonderful music of Madan Mohan" Stanza: Yaad rehjaati hai aur waqt guzar jaata hai Phool khilta bhi hai aur khil ke bikhar jaata hai Sab chale jaate hain, kab dard-e-jigar jaata hai DaaGH jo tune diya, dilse miTaya na gaya Song: Humse aaya na gaya, tumse bulaaya na gaya (33) Film: Dekh Kabira Roya Music: Madan Mohan Lyrics: Rajender Krishan 14. Haathon me mere tera haath rahe Dil se jo nikli hai woh baat rahe Could be the title song for this quiz :-) Quite a few people liked this sub-clue. Thanks! Pradeeps reaction to this song: "Chacha Chaudary zindabad!!" Roopa: "SC at his unpredictable best!" 5 people confused this to be from "Jeevan me piya tera saath rahe, haathon me mere tera haath rahe...", the Rafi/Lata duet from Goonj uTHi shehnaai. I expected more than 24 correct answers for this one, as the sub-clue almost gave the song away. Stanza: Haathon me mere tera haath rahe Dil se jo nikli hai woh baat rahe Mera tumhaara saari zindagi ka saath rahe Song: Aha "Rmim"-Jhim ke ye pyaare pyaare geet lie... (duet with Lata) (24) Film: Usne Kaha Thha Music: Salil Chaudary Lyrics: Shailendra 15. Be-quata tune mujhse KHushi chheen li Zinda rakha magar zindagi chheen li He seems to be sick of this world.... MD same as that of song #7. Roopa: "this category of songs really had me confused. I'm amazed at how many "I'm sick of this world" songs Talat sang, and all in the same tune!" 32 correct answers for this one and only 15 for #7 ??? Ah! The glorious uncertainities of RJGK!! :-) Stanza: Be-quata tune mujhse KHushi chheen li Zinda rakha magar zindagi chheen li Kar diya dil ka KHoon, chup kahan tak rahun, saaf kyun na kahun Tu KHushi se meri Dar gaya Song: Zindagi denewaale sun, teri duniya se ji bhar gaya (32) Film: Dil-e-Naadaan Music: Ghulam Mohammed Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni 16. Ye sach hai teri mehfil me, mere afsaane kuchh bhi nahin Par dil ki daulat ke aage, duniya ke KHazaane kuchh bhi nahin One of my fav. "Piano songs" composed by one of my fav. MD's. Unlike most songs in this category, you can actually hear the piano playing almost throughout the song. Many people wondered when Roshan had become my fav. MD. Well, he has always been "one of my fav. MD's". Stanza: Ye sach hai teri mehfil me, mere afsaane kuchh bhi nahin Par dil ki daulat ke aage, duniya ke KHazaane kuchh bhi nahin Yun mujhse nigahon ko na chura(2), tu aake mujhe pehchan zara Song: Main dil hun ek armaan bhara (27) Film: Anhonee Music: Roshan (my fav. #2) Lyrics: Satyendra 17. Afsos jali miTTi se mujhe, taqdir ne meri de maara Stanza: Armaan thha gulshan par barsun, ek shoq ke daaman par barsun Afsos jali miTTi se mujhe, taqdir ne meri de maara Did you get it from the stanza Prince and Neeraj ?? I know you are going to kill me for this :-) I certainly expected more than 17 correct answers for this one since I had given the rhyming line of the stanza. Poor judgement on my part :-( But, I always have 2 clues from one song in my RJGK's. But, this one technically wasn't from the same song.. this solo is a different song by itself. BTW, both clues are already there in the ISB. Thirteen entries had the correct answer for #9, but couldn't crack this one. Ravi Rai was the sole person who had the distinction of cracking this one, but missing the easier #9!! Pradeep, your job as the President of the Salil Chaudary fans club is in serious jeopardy after missing this one and #21. Song: Itna na mujhse tu pyaar baDha (the slow solo) (17) Film: Chhaya Music: Salil Chaudary Lyrics: Rajender Krishan 18. Dekh dekh chakori ka man hua chanchal Chanda ke mukhRe pe badli ka anchal The best part of this duet is that Suraiyya gets to sing only the mukhRa and not the antaras. Guri pointed out that "She does get to sing part of the last antaraa: *...Nainaa HoN Chaar, Zaraa Nainaa HoN Chaar* :)" Only 20 correct answers for this one :-( I thought the mention of Suraiyya would give the song away. Stanza: Dekh dekh chakori ka man hua chanchal Chanda ke mukhRe pe badli ka anchal Kabhi chhupe, kabhi khile, roop ka nikhar, khile roop ka nikhaar Song: Raahi matwaale, tu chheR ek baar man ka sitar (duet with Suraiyya) (20) Film: Waris Music: Anil Biswas Lyrics: Qamar Jalalabadi 19. Hum bad-naseeb pyaar ki rusvaai ban gae KHud hi lagake aag tamaashaai ban gae Ravi sometimes surprises you with his tunes, doesn't he ? A beautiful picturization involving Ashok Kumar and his conscience. C'mon guys, ONLY 23 correct answers for this one ?? This is perhaps the ONLY popular Talat/Ravi combo. Stanza: Hum bad-naseeb pyaar ki rusvaai ban gae KHud hi lagake aag tamaashaai ban gae Daaman se ab ye shole bujhaae to kya kiya Song: Sab kuchh luTake hosh me aae to kya kiya (Starts with "Karte rahe fiza se hum..." thanks Guri, I had forgotten this line) (23) Film: Ek Saali Music: Ravi Lyrics: Prem Dhawan 20. Jaakar kahin kho jaaun main, neend aae aur so jaaun main He was sad due to loneliness in song #4... now he wants to go far from the madding crowd. Kalyan: "I watched this boring Dilip Kumar movie just for this song." I'm sure it was worth it! Stanza: Jaakar kahin kho jaaun main, neend aae aur so jaaun main Duniya mujhe DHoonDe magar mera nishaan koi na ho Song: Ai dil mujhe aisi jagah le chal jahan koin na ho (27) Film: Aarzoo (old) Music: Anil Biswas Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri ************* Let's change gears a little here *************** 21. NaGHma hun kab magar mujhe, apne pe koi naaz thha Gaaya gaya hun jispe main, TooTa hua woh saaz thha What a wondeful song with smooth transitions!! This is where I plead guilty! It was cruel on my part to use a stanza which is seldom found on audio cassettes. But, I thought that it was still well known and therefore put it in the second gear. As it turned out, not many people had heard this one, although Nuts said that the lines fit many a TalaTune. My apologies for this one... it shouldn't have been included. But, this is my fav. stanza from this wonderful SC song. Stanza: NaGHma hun kab magar mujhe, apne pe koi naaz thha Gaaya gaya hun jispe main, TooTa hua woh saaz thha Jisne suna woh hans diya, hanske mujhe rula diya Song: Aansu samajhke kyun mujhe, aankh se tumne gira diya (9) Film: Chhaya Music: Salil Chaudary Lyrics: Rajender Krishan 22. Tere KHwaabon me kahin mera guzar hai ke nahin Poochh kar apni nigaahon se batade mujhko Wonderful lyrics... any guesses who penned them ? Even those who missed the song guessed the lyricist's name :-) Sahir Sahab zindabad! Stanza: Mere KHwaabon ke jharokon ko sajaanewaali Tere KHwaabon me kahin mera guzar hai ke nahin Poochh kar apni nigaahon se batade mujhko Meri raaton ke muquaddar me saher hai ke nahin Song: Pyaar par bas to nahin hai, mera lekin phir bhi (duet with Asha) (25) Film: Sone ki ChiDiya Music: O.P. Nayyar Lyrics: Sahir (of course!) 23. Teri zulph hai, mera haath hai, ke tu aaj bhi mere saath hai The GHazal king sings for the king of GHazals. Stanza: Teri zulph hai, mera haath hai, ke tu aaj bhi mere saath hai Tere dil me main bhi zaroor hun, tujhe yaad ho ke na yaad ho Song: Main teri nazar ka suroor hun (25) Film: Jahanara Music: Madan Mohan Lyrics: Rajender Krishan 24. Chalo jahan quismat le jaae Duniya paraai, log paraae The prelude is also repeated at the end of this song. A very popular TalaTune. This ought to have been in the first gear. Turned out to be too easy, despite being the second line in the stanza. Stanza: Dil me dil ka dard chhupaae Chalo jahan quismat le jaae Duniya paraai, log paraae Song: Raat ne kya kya KHwaab dikhaae (28) Film: Ek gaaon ki kahani Music: Salil Chaudary Lyrics: Shailendra 25. Woh bahaaren naachti thi, jhoomti thhi badliyaan Apni quismat yaad aate hi mera ji Dar gaya This movie had a solo each by Rafi, Manna Dey, Talat and Mukesh. I love the Mukesh solo, which is also a GHazal. BTW, the Mukesh GHazal is "Jab GHam-e-ishq sataata hai to hansleta hun..." Song: Dekhli teri KHudaai, bas mera dil bhar gaya (23) Film: Kinaare Kinaare Music: Jaidev Lyrics: Nyaya Sharma ********* Shift to the third gear ********* 26. Barbaad ho gaya meri umeed ka chaman Jis Daal par kiya thha basera woh jal gaee This is a GHazal. Use the radif and kaafiya (the rhyming pattern) to crack the clue. Roopa: "I WORSHIP this one. Has to be Naushad, isn't it?" It sure is!! When "A Naushad fan" conducts a RJGK, Naushad's songs manage to creep in :-) Lovely song, as you all will agree. Song: Duniya badal gaee, meri duniya badal gaee (11) Film: Babul Music: Naushad Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni 27. Daman pe likhi hai ashkon ne, rudaad humaari sunta ja The music reminds you of the desert. One of my all-time fav. Talat songs. Rajiv and Nuts mistook this for the other desert song from Rustom-Sohrab "Mazandaraan..." The clue was short, but hey, this was the third gear! Stanza: O jaanewale THehar zara, faryaad humari sunta ja Daman pe likhi hai ashkon ne, rudaad humaari sunta ja Jee sakenge na tujhse hokar juda Ja meri zindagi, tera Haafiz KHuda Song: Chal diya karwaan, luT gae hum yahaan, tum wahaan (What a song!) (15) Film: Laila Majnu Music: Ghulam Mohammed Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni 28. Ai denewaale tune to kuchh bhi kami na ki Ab kisko kya mila ye muquaddar ki baat hai These lines were foisted as the poet Saagar's in the recent movie Saajan. "GHam ki andheri raat me...." was not the only duet in which Talat's voice paled in Rafi's comparison. Again, as people pointed out, the first line ought to have been: Ai denewaale tune to koi kami na ki Quite a few people asked me whether this was indeed a Talat song. Answer: It sure is! There also exists a Rafi/MKaps version of this song which was eventually used in the movie. But the Rafi/Talat version exists as well. Guri, I beg to differ on "GHam ki andheri raat me..." I think Rafi's voice just stands out and I don't think it was the way it was supposed to be. Talat's voice fades away in many a duet with female singers as well. Ramesh Hariharan (of Singapore) had posted this song on the net many moons back. Our local Hariharan from Princeton boycotted the quiz :-( Perhaps, I should've thrown in a Shanky-J song to lure him in :-) Song: Mohabbat me aise zamaane bhi aae, kabhi ro diya hum, kabhi muskuraae (duet with Lata) (11) Film: Sagaai Music: C. Ramachandra Lyrics: Rajender Krishan 30. GHuroor hai na shaan hai har ek ada zubaan hai Ye kaisa imtehaan hai ke husn meherbaan hai Was this a "pirated" movie ? I know, the last clues is always the worst :-) I was relieved that some people actually liked this clue! The pirates being the Samundari Daaku, of course! The 6 teams which cracked this clue were: Guri, Prince & Neeraj, Preeti & Ashok, Mala Acharya, Chetan Vinchhi and Ashish & Renu. Kudo to them for getting this relatively unknown song. Song: Dil jawaan hai aarzoo jawaan (duet with Asha) (6) Film: Samundari Daaku Music: Jaidev Lyrics: V.M. Adil THE WINNERS!! Listed below are the teams which performed above average, ie. scored more than the avg. score of 20.5 Since, I had mentioned that there would be no tie-breakers, you'll find more than one team on most of the spots: Postion VIII: Mala Acharya Chetan Vinchhi (21 each) Postion VII: Lalitha (22) Position VI: Prashant Kulkarni Kalyan Kolachala & Atul Gupta (23 each) Position V: Seema Verma and her mom Nuts Hemlata and Vinay Mishra (Humaare Lehigh ke sitaare!) Atul Thombre (24 each) Position IV: Pavan Kumar Desikan & U.V. Ravindra Biju Parmeshwaran (25 each) Position III: Surjit Singh & Harmesh Kaur Balaji & Malini Ashish Bokil & Renu Thamma Roopa Dhawan, Ajit Dandekar & Janhavi Raut (28 each) And coming down to the final two positions, I feel like saying: "Maine shaaed tumhe, pehle bhi YAHIN dekha hai..." :-) Almost a deja-vu. Position II: Prince Kohli & Neeraj Malhotra (29) (They missed the Chhaya solo #17) And right at the top, not surprisingly though, we have a TIE. Since there are no tie-breakers, they are declared joint-winners!! CONGRATS TO: ******************************************************************************* GURI and ASHOK DHARESHWAR & PREETI RANJAN PANDA !!!! ******************************************************************************* THANKS to ALL the participants who made this quiz a success!!
