I didn't think that 30 clues would be too many, and even though I had songs from the 50s and 80s, it seems people are finding it difficult. So, I am removing the songs that seeme to be 'vague' or less heard of. Or some that are too famous to be in any quiz!! So, now with a more terse RJGK, back to the "old" "established" format, hopefully the response will increase, and some busy regulars will participate again, along with newcomers to the rmim and those who try the quiz but never participate!!! There are 25 total songs to be guessed. There are no NEW songs, so the reduction should not effect anybody's effort. Hence the deadline is still 25th October 95. ================================ | There are 3 main changes: | | Deadline: 25th Oct 95 | | Grading scheme: 25 of 25 | | Clues: reduced to 25 | ================================ ====================================================================== PLEASE DO NOT POST THE ANSWERS ON NET. MAIL THEM TO ME AT rava0002@gold.tc.umn.edu DEADLINE: 25th Oct 95 23:59 (Minneapolis) Post a few days earlier, in case your mailer might be having problems. ====================================================================== Clues: ===== The clues in my *ramblings* are in two forms. One is explicitly in "quotes", DOUBLE QUOTES, not single. The other, if it is too obvious will be lying there right infront of you in my ramblings. I may say sometimes, ' The guy says so and so, or the mukhaD.aa brings this image' etc. When I say it reminds me of so and so, read carefully, I am not names dropping when I mention a film name:-)))) Visual clues of what happens ON THE SCREEN are not much, if any. I will leave that for the Chitrahaar quizes! Mainly the clues are about the mukhD.aa, the flavour of the song etc. Some places you will find ........, those are lines or part of lines I took off, otherwise that would have made the song a real sitter :-))) But that does give you a clue, "ok, one more line to complete the antara!" Or it may help you sing "lalala" for the missing word. This quiz is not like a dry exam, here are the questions, answer them. I wud like if you sit back, enjoy the 'guftagu' and then at the end there is small question for you :-)) ====================================================================== PLEASE DO NOT POST THE ANSWERS ON NET. MAIL THEM TO ME AT rava0002@gold.tc.umn.edu DEADLINE: 25th Oct 95 23:59 (Minneapolis) Post a few days earlier, in case your mailer might be having problems. ====================================================================== And now, let me take my leg off the brakes, close my eyes, and leave the steering wheel as well ....... --------------------------------------------------------------------- Lata makes this song immortal coz of the sound effects provided to make it seem even more lonely and hollow and echoing. Separation is a slow poison, and the "very soul cries out"! I think not just virahee's like me, but others too can appreciate the depth of "the soul's cry for company of the beloved in the sleepless nights" right from the beginning crying alaap. Music by Hansraj Bahl, Lyrics by Prem Dhawan. #1 tumane to dekhaa~~ ho~~gaa, ai chaaNd taaroN~ | x2 kit gaye more saiyaaN, tum hee pukaaro~~~ O~~~~ tum hee pukaa~~ro~, jaao~~ unko .... .... --------------------------------------------------------------------- This song would remind many of "jab jaag uThe aramaaN to kaise neeNd aaye, ghar meN haseeN mehmaaN to kaise neeNd aaye" THAT was the biggest clue, right there!! The sentiments are, "you are here, night is young, who can sleep!" Pretty close to the 'jab jaag uThe' huh? BUT this song is a very good remix! Now poor in stats that I am, I don't know which song is a remix of which one, but the remix is ONLY in the content of the first line, NOT in music! A nice Mukesh, Asha duet from a movie whose name SOUNDS SO MUCH LIKE 'Sone ki ChiD.iyaa'. #2 M: mahakatee~ hawaa, chhalakatee ghaTaa~, hamse ye dil~, sambhaltaa~ naheeN kee~ minnateN, manaa kar thake~, kareN kyaa ye ab to, bahalataa~ naheeN .................................. --------------------------------------------------------------------- A movie about an artist, the song talks about "sky and moon and how the combo causes rain of a different kind, rain that quenches the thirst of the soul, not stomach." A nice KK number, rich in nature description. [ additions from netters: Lyrics: Indeevar, MD: Kalyanji Anandji duet with Sadhana Sargam (*I* am not sure of this last one) ] #3 ooNche-ooNche parvat, jab choomate haiN ambar ko pyaasaa-pyaasaa ambar, jab choomataa hai saagar ko pyaar se kasane ko, baahoN meN bharane ko ................... --------------------------------------------------------------------- The movie is about post-Independence state of kingdoms, and talks about changing times and equality. When I saw the movie, my images of the song changed and I wished I had never seen the movie. Now, I can no more imagine the song, and I didn't find the picturization as pathos invoking as I had thot! Anyway, the song says point blank that "I am very sad", and suggests the most effective remedy for it, most effective by all standards and even Western psychologists viz. "hug me"! Lyrics by Sahir, Music by Ravi. A Ashok Kumar, Sunil Dutt and Nanda starrer. This song has two versions, an Asha solo, and a Asha/Rafi duet. #4 Rafi: bahut sahee, gam-e-duniyaa, magar udaas na ho kareeb hai shab-e-gam kee, sahar udaas na ho bahut sahee~~ Asha: yooN intezaa~~r kaa dukh, ab sahaa naheeN~~ jaataa taD.ap rahee~~, hai~~ muhobbat, rahaa naheeN jaataa ............ bhaTak chukee hooN bahut, zindagee kee raa~~hoN meN mujhe ab aake, chhupaa lo, tum apanee baa~~hoN meN ............ --------------------------------------------------------------------- I know, I don't 'treasure' patriotic songs that much, coz many times it feels they are just bragging. But then this song sets me thinking, WHICH other nations, civilization brags in SUCH a NICE WAY!!! And maybe presently we don't see much of rural India in its full color. I mean how many of us have ever gone to a village 'kushtee' match -- the WWF of rural India :-)) The Bajarang dal has got much defame after its political involvement, but the studs of India are good studs too! The toughness of the body and softness of heart! Anyway, which ever angle you look at, "this country of the romantic braves is beyond words"! And I am just coming from that country !!! A Rafi, Balbir and chorus song, most famous for its HOY-Y-Y-Y in between! Music by OP Nayyar and Lyrics by Sahir. A Dilip starrer. #5 yahaaN chauD.ee chhaatee veeroN kee, yahaaN bholee shakaleN heeroN kee yahaaN gaate hai raaNjhe HOY-Y-Y, yahaaN gaate haiN raaNjhe mastee meN, mastee hai jhoome bastee meN~~~~ --------------------------------------------------------------------- The village belle is walking very carefully, maybe doesn't want to get caught or something! A very nice narrative of the dilemma of the lady! Not that she is coming to meet you, "she is of course going to meet her lover, with bewildered eyes and him in her heart", but what harm it makes to imagine ki, 'kaheeN apne liye bhi aise hee koi milane aati to!' A Hemant solo, the flute and sitar in this semi-classical song made me note down a comment next to it, 'This song makes my headache go away' #6 komal tan hai~, sau bal khaayaa ho gayee bai~ran apanee~~ hee kaayaa ghooNghaT khole naa~~, muNh se bole naa raah chalat sambhalee .... (bairan = enemy) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is a Navin Nischal starrer, the words of the song are pretty fast paced. I heard this in '85 last, after that I have not heard, but I think it is Rafi. The song tune is VERY clear in my head, and I wud like to give this song the award for 'most intricately fabricated words and arranged nicely in a variety of tempo'. The words are not necessarily GREAT, but not bad either! The guy is teasing the gal thru the bhuTTe fields I guess. A very "detailed description" of the gal is given and the earth "shattering" effects on the guy! "All the parts of the gal seem to be moving", not stationary, and that causes the "guy to get earthquakes" of 7 on Richter scale. And "intoxicating" she is!! #7 nashe se palakeN, tanee-tanee, jaan meree pe, banee-banee chaD.hatee jawaanee teree~~, kaise sambhaale too husn teraa, matawaalaa hai, aree kisake liye, sambhaalaa hai banooN rakhawaalaa kar de~~, mere hawaale too teree ye jawaanee~~, albelee, ye pahelee, hai akelee mujhe, saathee banaale~~~~ --------------------------------------------------------------------- What is the most famous lullaby in all of Hindi? No, don't tell me. This lullaby is the first one to come to mind for its first letter, in all antaksharis I attended :-) Think of the same movie, and this song shud be easy. Though sung at time of casting as a background song, this song gives another definition of love. Like Gulzar in 'hamne dekhi hai un annkhoN', this song say s Love is pretty abstract, but the "only thing that you remember of anyone". Everything else is a goner. The ones you leave behind will also remember your love - "Love is all that will be left, after you leave"! So, love while you can, and exude positive feelings! A Shashi Kapoor, Vidya Sinha starrer. #8 rok letee haiN raah meN yaadeN, jab bhee raahoN se ham guzarate haiN kho gaye kahakahoN meN jo unako aaNsoo-oN meN talaash karate haiN dil pe halkee see choT lagatee hai, dard aaNkhoN se TooT bahataa hai --------------------------------------------------------------------- The young girl, has just reached the threshold of jawaanee, I guess, and is surprised by the changes not just physical, but emotional, in her very personality! How, "she has moved her center of focus from herslef to somebody else :-)) and wonders what could be wrong today"? Little does she know that she has been bitten hard by the love bug! See the beautifully expressed, simple observations of the teen! I guess, she doesn't know what is in store, when her own 'kaayaa' will soon become her own enemy! :-) Sung by the person better known as an MD, Usha Khanna, I don't know of many songs sung by her. #9 koi dekhe hameN, koi chaahe hameN, aur saraahe hameN ye tamannaa ye khwaaish ye hasarat na thee, ......... apane andaaz par, naaz karate the ham, hamko apanee kasam gair se baat karane kee fursat na thee, ............. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Remember Teen Deviyaan by Dev? Dev and DeviyaaN, well, what is the surprise! But this song is not from there! This song has a flovour of 'are yaar meree tum bhee gajab' even though this one is sung by Manna and Lata This one is not about the veil but the "scarf" and "'hawaa meN uD.ataa jaaye, moraa laal dupaTTaa' kind of sentiment!" I like this song for its variety of tempo, and netters can tell me which MD used to do that :-)) After every antara's last word, there wud be a dead stop of all music, and a saaraa raaraa raaraa raaH #10 F: phisale~~, naheeN chal ke, kabhee dukh kee~~ Dagar pe~ Tho~kar, lage haNs deN~, ham basane waale, dil ke nagar ke M: arey, har kadam bahak ke sambhal jaa~~ye re! (STOP!) saaraa raaraa raaraa raah, HA AHHH --------------------------------------------------------------------- You think only Anarkali or Mughal-e-Azam had good dialogues or songs? Here is one song, in an unexpected movie, sung by Mahendra Kapoor (YES! I am positive :-)) and Lata. The characters are of course in a drama, or else this has to be a film on Anarkali! The movie has nothing to do with Anarkali, just this short drama in the movie. I like the words of this song, and the rapid contrast or sawaal-jawaab that is built in the couplets! The song mukhaD.aa is pretty simple, it is like those kindergarten books, 'Mohan aa. Khaanaa khaa. Sarita aa. Khaanaa khaa' kind simple assertions, or is it their way of introducing each other? But they talk of "their state being as of homogenous solutions, they are totally mixed into each other" like sugar in water, "like love immersed in beauty? And they can't say anything more", pretty small vocabulary they have:-) A Sunil Dutt, Vimmi starrer. A Mahendra Kapoor and Asha duet. #11 F: kahaaN~~ saleem kaa, rutabaa kahaaN~ anarkalee~~~ ye aisee shaakh-e~~-tamannaa hai, jo kabhee naa phalee M: na bujh sakegee~~ bujhaane se, ahal-e-duniyaa ke~~ wo shammaa, jo teree aaNkhoN meN, me~re dil~ meN jalee (rutabaa = stature; shaakh-e-tamannaa = bough of desire; ahal-e-duniyaa = people of this world) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This slow song of a "speedy" movie, was my favourite in class 4 to sing in music class, in deep Mukesh voice, and bore every one to death! When after years of not having heard it, I sang it in an antakshari, I myself realized, I was going at a snail's pace! "Even though rivers do slow down in their later stages, it is like this world, fast or slow, always has two banks! And we, the floating currents, who can say where we will go!" A duet by Mukesh and I think Asha (or is it Lata?), from a movie somewhere in 70s. #12 chalate~ huwe jeevan kee~~~~, raftaa~~r meN ik lay hai ik raa~g meN ik sur meN~~~~~, sansaa~~r kee har shai hai sansaar kee har shai hai ............................ hai~ kau~~n wo duniyaa~ meN~~~~, naa paa~~p kiyaa~ jisane bin~ ulajhe~ kaaNTo~N se~~~~~, haiN~~ phool chune kisane haiN~~ phool chune kisane ............................ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AAH! Another song from a movie of the 80s! Wow!! I actually have a song from 80s!! No guys, this is a cool song! And, I will cry like a baby, if everyone of you didn't get it! Not only to make this quiz have some new songs as well, (Hey! I got quite a few post 75 songs in here!!) this song is a nice one, and I like it. ( Do I see Ashok shrugging! ) I am not going to give any more clues for this one, a hit KK, Asha (or Lata?) duet, it picks up pace towards the end. It was listed in the 'daaroo' songs! ENOUGH! ok!! :-)) But I have picked the Asha part!! kuchh to tough karooN!! "It is something you wud have said if I didn't post this RJGK for another couple of weeks!" #13 O mere sajanaa~~~, lo maiN aa gayee~~~ are! logoN ne to, diyeN hoNge, baD.e baD.e, nazaraane, laayee hooN maiN, tere liye, dil meraa~~~ dil yahee, maaNge dua, ham kabhee, hoN naa zudaa, dil meraa, teraa hai ye, dil meraa~~~ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This song has also made our prestigious lists of RMIM, like the top ten lists of Letterman. Category? kids! Yes, we need a kiddo song too! I briefly refered to a lullaby somewhere in the clues above, but never had any kid song. There was a program on AIR at 5 PM, called "Nan Mun", for kids below 5 yrs, and one day at my grandpa's place, when I was in class 11, I had this program on, a bit early than the songs program, but then this beautiful song by Rafi came along. It is a zoo in here, and I am removing ALL names of animals, or else, it is sitter!! Even now it is a sitter. #14 chalate chalate milegaa ......, ham boleNge naacho kaaloo, naa~~cho kaaloo~~, naacho~ kaaloo munna Dhol bajaayegaa, ....... naach dikhaayegaa ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This song, a Mukesh solo, is a good sampler of sad songs by Mukesh. I sometimes wonder if the lyricists themselves had Mukesh in mind when writing or the character! "Wonders upon broken promises and infidelity of loyals" Also, it was the favourite among freshmen Biharis, an the senior Biharis would go, 'aaaah!' with anguish over the song! Under the song I have this small note: Mukesh birth: 22 July 1923, death 27 Aug 1976 = 53 yr 36 days I guess, this was on 27 Aug, on one of his anniversary program :-( #15 wo itanaa bataa~~ deN~~, kabhee paas aa~~ke milaa kyaa unhe hai~~~, hameN yooN miTaa ke khataa kyaa thee jo, wo khafaa~~~ ho gaye~~~ --------------------------------------------------------------------- The loverboy is trying to flatter the gal by saying that she is more beautiful than the heavenly bodies! Neah! he goes to the extent of saying that these "heavenly bodies come and beg some alms of beauty from her!!" Wow! Whether these hevenaly bodies are "stone cast Apsaraas" or not, I don't know! A Mukesh solo, not a sad one for a change :-) It is her gait that knocks him off! "Even the bough of flowers would bow for her." What a 'yamak alankaar' 'bough-bow' 'flower-for her', Waah Pintu waah! A Manoj, Waheeda, Mumtaz combo. #16 sitam ye adaa-oN kee, raanaa-iyaaN~~ haiN kayaamat hai kyaa teree, aNgaD.aa-iyaaN~~ haiN bahaar-e-chaman ho, ghaTaa ho dhanak ho ye sab teree soorat kee, parachaa-iyaaN haiN (raanaa-iyaaN = beauty; raanaa-i-e-khayaal = beauty of thot dhanak = rainbow) --------------------------------------------------------------------- This song, in the typical Rafi (for Shammi style, I am NOT saying Shammi is in the song/movie!) voice, is the opposite of that Tejaab song on Anil Kapoor that said something like, 'This is my first love, so may be I made mistake, so pardon me'. This song below doesn't say whether the love is first or not, but the encounters with lovely belles is NOT first time, rather "tenth of a million"th time!! and yet, "despite all the rose-red lips and drowsy eyes, there is something lacking somewhere!!" #17 bheegee-bheegee rut kee, chhaa~~Nw tale man lo, kaheeN wo, aa~~n mile kaise pahachaanooN, ke naam naheeN jaanooN ........ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- A naughty Asha, Rafi with lot of swearing, not in the sense of abuse, but like "swear by me" kind of swearing. And the belle is giving a clear and present danger kind of warning that, "Mister, you will repent later, so don't be a snob" Reminds one of the 'achchha jee maiN haaree chalo maan jaa-o naa' in its impish, naughty yet arousing effects. It is the Takkar of equally strong headed people I think :) #18 jaate ho to jaa-o~~, chal diye jee ham bhee aa-o yaa naa aa-o~~, ab naheeN hai gam bhee --------------------------------------------------------------------- This song is in here, coz it is the only song SUNG by Anand Bakhshi that I know of! And it is a wonderful bhajan, describing the "temporariness of the world like stay in Motel 6, or a TravelLodge! You come and stay, then go, someone else stays! This traffic continues, no one stays!!" #19 dekhe pahuNche kaun kahaaN par, raahee nikalaa gaataa haNsataa sabakee apanee-apanee manzil, apanaa-apanaa rastaa o jogee~~~, jee~~van path anajaanaa, ..... --------------------------------------------------------------------- A Rafi Lata combo, this is the song that makes Desis have problem when they just come to the USA! Any girl talks to them and they think they got a jackpot of a 'babe'!!! Life is made man!! Jive to!! But, hey! this is India, Indian movie, and that too not of Govinda or Urmila Sorry fans! :-) So, in those times, if a gal talked to you, and that too persistently, there was > 50% chance she was interested in you more than just homework, or office work! And the poor guy! Girls will never understand the dilemmas of a guy! Is she coming on to me, is she not coming on to me? She loves me, she loves me not! "Then why does she talk to me?" "Is it a lie or is it a truth"? #20 F: bholepan meN hai wafaa kee khushaboo isape sab kuch na kyooN luTaa-ooN maiN meraa betaab dil ye kahataa hai tere saaye se lipaT jaa-ooN maiN --------------------------------------------------------------------- A poignant song, by the King of gazals, in a historic movie! It depicts the helplessness of being away, separation! Why do I have so many such songs here? :-)) Take a moment, and reflect back, those in USA may be able to do that more easily, with long distance relationships (parents, spouses or kins in India), "Sometimes the distance pinches!! And what if YOU cause the sorrow to somebody and can't even be there to soothe them:-((" When you are truly in love, the sentiment of the mukhaD.aa comes naturally to you, if you were ever so sad and lonely, or if someone cried on your shoulder! Music by Madan Mohan, Lyrics by Rajendra Krishan #21 ai~ kaash jo mil kar rote~, kuchh dard to halke hote bekaa~~r na jaate aaNsooN~, kuchh daag jigar ke~ dhote phir ranj na hota~ itana, hai tanhaa-ee meN jitanaa ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Another fast paced song. A Lata Rafi duet. I have included this song, coz I have not heard anyone mention anyting about this beautiful song on RMIM. I don't know how tough it is, but hopefully, some shud get it!! It has a very catchy tune, and describes about "what effect the beautiful ambience has on the heart, and wishes to hug the beloved". The beloved, the delicate chui-mui, "is melting away in the heat of the gaze, and wants her lover to rather reside in her heart!" #22 shaane, pe mere, giraa de zulfeN aaNkhoN, pe mere, bichhaa del zulfeN aisaa jagaa de pyaar kaa jaadoo saare jahaaN pe chhaaye nashaa --------------------------------------------------------------------- Had this song for the then craze Reshma, the husky singer. A nice banjaaraa style song, in a movie that made a new hero emerge on screen! Now a well established hero. This also laments about the separation! "If a few days are unbearable, how am I going to spend the years"!! Someone ask ME, yes, me meaning Pintu Diwana :-)) I seen it all, dude!! Campfire and all that banjaaraa effects on the screen! and Dafalee. #23 ik to sajan mere paas naheeN re dooje milan koi aas naheeN re usape ye saawan aaya, ........ --------------------------------------------------------------------- I wonder how many have heard this song. When I heard the name of the movie I laughed, sounded like the obvious reaction to the matrimonial ad you liked! A Mukesh, Suman duet from a forgetable movie, but unforgetable song, if you once hear it! I like it for its short 'beher' in the antaras endings. It is a "game of maze they are playing with the spring as if the whole life is a dream of thirsty eyes!" [ netter correction: Mukesh/Kamal Barot, Rafi/Suman duets, two versions] #24 hoThoN pe pyaar kee~~, meethee see raaginee chehare pe, aarazoo kee dheemee-dheemee, roshanee meree dhaD.akan, teree baateN~~, tere jalawe, meree aaNkheN~~ jaise ye roshanee, jaagee~~ee~~ee aaNkhoN kaa khwaab hai --------------------------------------------------------------------- And to top it all, here is the Rafi, Asha duet that I listened ONLY once , wrote it down, and NEVER EVER got a chance to listen to it again. But it is again of the naughty nature, as you can see from the 'nakhare' of the belle. What he is saying is "not to be shy when the gaze locks!" What she says is "not to lock the gaze if he is scared of the world!" Seems a deal to me :-))) And I know, people have heard this song! I know it, from some postings on RMIM itself!! #25 F: milate hee nigaaheN diwaane, kyooN machal gaya dil teraa hai M: bas ye samajho ik bhaNware ne, tumhe phool samajh kar gheraa hai F: hooN phool agar, bhaNwaraa ban kar, tarasaate ho kyooN, kyooN, kyooN ============================= Finito ================================= Hope you enjoyed the quiz as much as I enjoyed compiling it! ====================================================================== PLEASE DO NOT POST THE ANSWERS ON NET.
