Over all, a bit tough. But to my surprise, there were some songs that *I* thot tough but were cracked by MANY!! :-)) The participants (in no particular order) were: 1. Rajalakshmi Kamath 2. Harmesh Kaur and Surjit Singh 3. Abhishek Chauhan 4. Vandana_Sharma_at_DFL2@mercer.com 5. Satish Subramanian 6. Ramki Krishnan < ramki@churchill.ColumbiaSC.NCR.COM > 7. Malini & Balaji 8. Medha Pai 9. Tanvi Chawla and Akif Sultan 10. Neeraj Deshmukh, Swapna and Indy 11. Anil Hingorani (ahingor@etsd.ml.com) 12. Samiuddin Mohammed (sm0e@Lehigh.EDU) 13. Rajesh Harekal 14. Shalini Razdan 15. rtasis@magna.com.au 16. Pavan Kumar Desikan (pkd@cs.duke.edu) 17. Dipak M. Thakker, Ambrish Sundaram and Poonam 18. Ikram A Khan 19. Ashok Dhareshwar 31293 20. ramesh vellanki (ramesh@auriga.unm.edu) 21. Nitin Buty, Suhail Ansari, Manish Shah, Sadanand 22. Prince Kohli and Neeraj Malhotra (pkohli@cc.gatech.edu) 23. Abhay Avachat (abhay.avachat@blr.sni.de) 24. kalyan and Atul 25. Pradeep Dubey 26. Mohan Rathore Total 26 teams, with 38 participants!! Thanks all! Not bad, going by the general idea that this was a tough RJGK. I didn't intend it to be, then again, I guess this is not CBSE Board that the results have to be > 95% Some songs that I thot were less heard of, seemed to be cracked by many, and some that I thot were more common seemed to be unheard of! A couple songs, I knew may not fetch any answers, but I put them coz they are really nice songs! While RJGK 25 was under way, I had mentioned that the songs in RJGK on Vividh Bharati will be such that if you have not heard already, then you should hear them!! Of course, there were some post 70, post 80 songs, I had them just coz sometimes one wants to hear a light or 'different' song as well, like the "lambee judaa-ee" or the "intehaa ho gayee". The songs I had to chop off are included in the other post on RJGK - songs, which gives complete lyrics (as much as I have) of each song. I removed based on some being too tough, or too popular. HERE ARE THE SONGS, AND COMMENTS BY THE PARTICIPANTS, ALONG WITH THE POPULARITY INDEX :-)) [Since one team only sent the answers to the 9 songs that were removed (and got 7 correct!!) in the final version, and mysteriously didn't send any answers to the 25 actual clues, I am considering only 25 teams as far as the statistics for the songs go. The numbers [n/m] after the song number refer to "n out of m teams got the clue". ] ------------ General Comments --------------- The quiz was interesting. It reminded me of my days in Delhi when VB used to be like a clock for us. We would know the time of the day not by looking at the clock but by listening to VB. --------------- Yup! Have been busy lately. One good thing came out of the RJGK. I organized my cassette collection. The bad thing is I have 20 odd cassettes ( each on 90 minutes too) that I have NO idea of the songs, except cryptic post it tags stuck to the inside of each such as Boston, fall 94 :-) I am working on them at the rate of 3-4 each weekend. Will look at the latest one on the net as soon as I finish this. I hope you did not eliminate the ones I knew! I truly enjoyed the exercise, brings back happy memories of vividh bharati. especially madhu malati and bela ke phool. I hope when you post the answers, you will post all the original 31 answers! ----------------- well, well, i noticed the new deadline and decided to take more time. i am having second thoughts about participating at all not because the quiz wasn't fun but because 4 of the 5 questions you knocked out, we (my teammate and i) had been able to solve. ----------------- It was fun attempting this quiz. I notice that you seem to have picked a lot more duets than solos here; personal preference? Wide variety of what I would call the fringe songs, that have good music, but do not become super popular, and hover continuously just on the edge, never letting you completely forget them, thanks to VB! Do post the answers to the songs you snipped from the quiz too, as I'd like to find how many I got right there! ----------------- Here is my entry. Though I found the quiz to be tough, enjoyed it because of your "guftaguu" before each clue. You have set new standards for "clueing" in RJGK Pavan -------------- Badaa chhotasa munh leke hum aapko yeh mail bhej rahe haiN. I will also take this opportunity to express my solidarity with Baron Pierre De Coubertin's belief that it is the taking part that matters and not the winning. ========================================================================= ************************************************************************** #1 [17/25] haay jiyaa roye, piyaa naahi aaye, ik maiN hi jaa~~gooN, saaraa jag soye > tumane to dekhaa~~ ho~~gaa, ai chaaNd taaroN~ | x2 ------------ Comments --------------- Film : Milan (Nalini Jaywant & Ajit) This movie has a rarely heard duet by ( Suman & Rafi) 'din ho yaa raat, ham raheiN tere saath, ye hamaari marzi' EXCELLENT song by Lata from Milan (music Hansraj Behl). BTW, I came across another lovely song "Aaj dil pe koi zor chalta nahin, muskuraane lage thhe magar ro paRe..." by Lata. This is also from the movie Milan, but Lata's voice seems too "new" for it to be from Hansraj Behl's Milan. And the lyrics and tune are too good to be from the other Milan of Anand Bakshi and LP... wonder which Milan it really is from.... [Pintu: I myself don't know which Milan it is. I have watched Dilip's Milan (based on Tagore's novel, then left it in between, later I watched Sunil Dutt's Milan. Then while doing this RJGK, thot maybe I will watch the movie. Got the video, it was again the Dilip's Milan. So, I don't know which Milan this song is from] Confused initially with "Mohabbat ki Jhoothi Kahaani.." and then realising that was by Naushad, got on the right track! leke pehalaa pehalaa pyaar also has similar lyrics. tumane to dekhaa hogaa usako sitaaro.n aao zara mere sang milake pukaaro [ Pintu: Wow!! Never thought of that antara!! ] ************************************************************************** Any way, this song would remind many of "jab jaag uThe aramaaN to kaise neeNd aaye, ghar meN haseeN mehmaaN to kaise neeNd aaye" THAT was the biggest clue, right there!! The sentiments are, "you are here, night is young, who can sleep!" Pretty close to the 'jab jaag uThe' huh? #2 [18/25] saath ho tum aur raat jawaaN, neeNd kise ab chain kahaaN kuch to samajh ai bhole sanam, kahatee hai kyaa nazaroN kee zabaaN > mahakatee~ hawaa, chhalakatee ghaTaa~, hamse ye dil~, sambhaltaa~ naheeN > kee~ minnateN, manaa kar thake~, kareN kyaa ye ab to, bahalataa~ naheeN ------------ Comments --------------- Another simple matter of translation :) Guessed from the lines themselves, the clue was clear too! ************************************************************************** #3 [23/25] neele-neele ambar par chaand jab aaye > ooNche-ooNche parvat, jab choomate hai ambar ko > pyaasaa-pyaasaa ambar jab choomataa hai saagar ko ------------ Comments --------------- IMO, the Tamil original of this song ("ILaya nilA pozhigiradhu..." - in the movie "Payangangal mudivadhillai" - voice SPB, music Ilayaraja) was much better. Easy enough! A very popular song at college gatherings with attempts galore to reproduce the guitar "riffs" ;-) in the song! (Kunal Goswami, Sri Devi) ************************************************************************** #4 [13/25] FILM: Aaj aur kal SINGER: Asha/Rafi, Asha F: mujhe gale se laga lo, bahut udaas hooN maiN > bahut sahee, gam-e-duniyaa, magar udaas na ho > kareeb hai shab-e-gam kee, sahar udaas na ho ------------ Comments --------------- (Aaj aur Kal) Is this song from Aaj aur Kal? The Rafi verse was a dead giveaway, as that is the only one he has in the song, and it is distinctive, like most Rafi songs! [Pintu: ab kyaa karooN maiN?? People even got the movie, but not the song :-(( ] ************************************************************************** #5 [22/25] ye desh hai weer jawana ka, albeloN ka mastaano ka is desh ka yaaroN kya kahan, ye desh hai duniya ka gahana > yahaaN chauD.ee chhaatee veeroN kee, yahaaN bholee shakaleN heeroN kee ************************************************************************** #6 [20/25] chali gori pee se milan ko chali nainaa baawariyan, man me sawariyan .. > komal tan hai~, sau bal khaayaa > ho gayee bai~ran apanee~~ hee kaayaa ************************************************************************** The guy is teasing the gal thru the bhuTTe fields I guess. A very "detailed description" of the gal is given and the earth "shattering" effects on the guy! "All the parts of the gal seem to be moving", not stationary, and that causes the "guy to get earthquakes" of 7 on Richter scale. And "intoxicating" she is!! #7 [18/25] FILM: Saawan Bhaado kaan meN jhumka, chaal me Thumka, kamar pe choTee laTake ho gayaa dil kaa purjaa-purjaa, lage pachaasee jhaTake HO teraa rang hai nasheelaa, ang-ang hai nasheelaa > nashe se palakeN, tanee-tanee, jaan meree pe, banee-banee > chaD.hatee jawaanee teree~~, kaise sambhaale too ------------ Comments --------------- SolahwaaN saawan ?? (Rekha's first movie) Pratigyaa ? A rustic, robust song with a great deal of excitement done full justice to, by Rafi! It used to be repeated very often in VB in the 80s. ************************************************************************** What is the most famous lullaby in all of Hindi? No, don't tell me. This lullaby is the first one to come to mind for its first letter, in all antaksharis I attended :-) Think of the same movie, and this song shud be easy. Though sung at time of casting as a background song, this song gives another definition of love. Like Gulzar in 'hamne dekhi hai un annkhoN', this song say s Love is pretty abstract, but the "only thing that you remember of anyone". Everything else is a goner. Similarly, the ones you leave behind will also remember your love - "Love is all that will be left, after you leave"! So, love while you can, and exude positive feelings! A Shashi Kapoor, Vidya Sinha? starrer. #8 [0/25] FILM: Mukti SINGER: Mukesh/Rafi?? pyaar hai ik nishaan kadamoN kaa, jo musafir ke baad rahataa hai bhool jaate haiN log sab lekin, kuch naa kuch phir bhee yaad rahataa hai > rok letee haiN raah meN yaadeN, jab bhee raahoN se ham guzarate haiN > kho gaye kahakahoN meN jo unako aaNsoo-oN meN talaash karate haiN > dil pe halkee see choT lagatee hai, dard aaNkhoN se TooT bahataa hai ------------ Comments --------------- [Pintu: So many people got the clue correct as to the Mukti Lullaby "Lallaa Lallaa Loree ". In any antaaksharee, when the letter "l" comes, the first song any team blurt s out is "lallaa lallaa lori" and then every other team comments, "Oh No! Not th at bachchoN ka song" But, even though RMIMers got the movie, they didn't go one more extra step of finding the song :-((] zikr hotaa hai jab qayaamat kaa, tere jalwoN ki baat hoti hai Not very sure about this one. Ans: ??? (Mamta) ???????? This is NOT Jab ye dil udaas hota hai (Mukti) (I thought the most famous lullaby was from the movie Albela. The only Shashi Ka poor/Vidya Sinha movie I can think of is "Mukti" and I just know the Mukesh song from that movie) Best lullaby is "Dheere se aaja ri ankhiyan me..." by CR. Ashok will be pleased to hear that I rank this above Naushad's "Ho, chandan ka palna..." :-) Donno :-( Naya gaana lagta hai :-( Film: Mukti ? (Guessed from the clues above!) Can't get it! Is'nt this movie the same one as, the Mukesh Lori,"La la la la Lorie, dooodh Ki Katori...", as well as "Suhani Chandni Raatein Hame Sone Nahi Deti..."? Your clues are good here, if the information I have deciphereed is correct, but probably I have'nt heard the song :-( or its too long ago. -- Movie is 100% "Mukti" (Lalla lalla lori -- is the lullaby) ************************************************************************** #9 [8/25] ab se pahale to ye~~ dil kee haa~~lat na thee aaj kyaa ho gayaa~~, aaj kyaa~ ho gayaa > koi dekhe hameN, koi chaahe hameN, aur saraahe hameN > ye tamanna ye khwaaish ye hasarat na thee, aaj kyaa ho gayaa ------------ Comments --------------- [ My mistake by saying this was a Usha Khanna song. Clerical mistake :-)) But still lot of people got the song!] "Ab se pehle to yeh dil ki haalat na thi, aaj kya ho gayaa..." " part must have made anybody who has heard the song get it! Wonder if the hiccuppy sound in the song was made by Lata herself? Another thought, what made RD go for Lata in this song? Normally, Asha was the choice for such songs, I would think! (Rajesh Khanna+Asha Parekh+Anwar) ************************************************************************** #11 [11/25] FILM: Hamraz SINGER: MK, Asha too husn hai maiN ishq hooN, too mujh meN haiN maiN tujh meN hooN maiN isake aage kyaa kahooN, too mujh meN haiN maiN tujh meN hooN >F: kahaaN~~ saleem kaa, rutabaa kahaaN~ anarkalee~~~ > ye aisee shaakh-e~~-tamannaa hai, jo kabhee naa phalee ------------ Comments --------------- ???????? The only Anand Bakshi song that he has sung himself, that I know of is from Charas, *ing Dharmendra and Hema, in which, he sings some 10 - 12 lines, which go something like ".... Preeth bina yeh jeevan soona..." (thats all I remember) and then Rafi/Lata take over with "Ke aaja teri yaad aaai! (2) O Balam Harjaae..." Is this above one, the same one or another, that I have not heard? ************************************************************************** A Rafi Lata combo, this is the song that makes Desis have problem when they just come to the USA! Any girl talks to them and they think they got a jackpot of a 'babe'!!! Life is made man!! Jive to!! But, hey! this is India, Indian movie, and that too not of Govinda or Urmila Sorry fans! :-) So, in those times, if a gal talked to you, and that too persistently, there was > 50% chance she was interested in you more than just homework, or office work! And the poor guy! Girls will never understand the dilemmas of a guy! Is she coming on to me, is she not coming on to me? She loves me, she loves me not! "Then why does she talk to me?" "#8 pyaar hai ik nishan" should have been cracked by many, wince tehy got the movie name! And now for the results! Hence pick good songs, so at least after the results are out, teams don't get mad :-)) [ Hope so...] 3. participation is really the main thing, not how many clues one gets 4. just preparing the results, adding comments from teams etc can be time consuming! it helps to have different editors!!
