People tell me that answers are more important than results. So, here you are ... The numbers nn/20 denote the number of correct answers out of 20. #1 laDki: kaahe kaahe ghaTaa mein bijali chamake (2) laDka: ho sakataa hai megharaaj ne baadariyaa ka shyaam shyaam mukh choom liya ho Song: kuhu kuhu bole koyaliya 19/20 Film: SuvarNa Sundari ('57) Voice: Rafi-Lata Music: Adi Narayana Rao Words: Bharat Vyas Cast: Anjali Devi, A. Nageshwara Rao Source: HMV's first one-cassette release of Claasical Songs from Films has a version with two stanzas. Rafi-Lata Amnol Ratan set has a version with three stanzas. I am yet to find a recording that has the stanza used in the clue! Roopa: Wonderful song. Reminds me of my youth and the 7:15 am fifteen minute program on Vividh Bharathi, that had the film-song- based-on-raag-followed-by-raag-sung/played-by-maestro format. Anil: Way too easy. This one did not need any more clues than #31. ==> My hopes for having at least one clue answered by everyone were dashed by one answer: "dekho bijali Dole". Time for negative marks! #2 laDki: palako.n ka hai qalam banaayi kaajal behakar bani siyaahi kaise likhoo.n kahaani gham ki, tu hi mujhe bataa de re Song: chanda re mori patiyaan le jaa, patiyaan le ja, 7/20 saajan ko pahunchaa dere ho likh sake jawaab unhe tu meraa pataa bataa dere, chandaa re Film: Banjarin ('60) Singers: Mukesh-Lata Music: Pardesi Lyrics: Pandit Madhur Cast: ? Source: Mukesh-Lata 4-cassette set; Mukesh Duets Anmol Ratan set Roopa: No clue. I studied your hints with a magnifying glass, and cleverly tried to come up with it. Failed, of course. Anil: What a beauty! #3 laDka: aati ho to aankho.n mein, bijali si chamakati hai (2) laDki: shaayar ki mohabbat hai, aankho.n se chhalakati hai (2) laDka: chhoDoo.n na tera daaman, chhoDoo.n na tera daaman mai.n hu.n tera, saudaayi Song: zulfo.n ki ghaTaa lekar saawan ki pari aayi 12/20 Film: Reshmi Rumal ('61) Singers: Manna Dey-Lata Music: Babul Lyrics: Raja Mehdi Ali Khan Cast: Manoj, Shakeela Source: Manna Dey Duets 4-cassette album #4 namaami brahma, namaami viShNu, namaami maheshwaraa uDe gandh swar dishaa dishaa mein bhed rahe na, uSha nisha mein bhuvan bhuvan sarase Song: tum naacho ras barase, barase tum naacho ras barase 11/20 Film: Sati Nari ('63) Singer: Mahendra Kapoor Music: Pandit Shivaram Lyrics: Bharat Vyas Cast: ? Source: Golden Collection: Classical Songs from Films, 4-cassette set Roopa: Aah, a really good MK showcase song. Ajay: MK's "buttery" voice? You mean greasy, oily, high in saturated fats, don't you ? ==> No. Snehal: The song is in the heart, but refuses to come up to the lips! Anil: Probably one of the VERY few songs of MK that I like. Surjit: Yes. Pandit Shivram was born in Jodhpur in 1927. and Dharmendra was selected as the actor in the same contest. #5 TooTe rishte, yaad mein unki, kyon bheegi hai.n palake.n bikhare bikhare dil ke TukaDe, unki khaatir taDape pyaase aankhe.n pee jaaye aa.nsoo, aankho.n se na chhalake jab tak main ne samajhaa aa.nsoo kya hai daaman bheeg gaya, daaman bheeg gaya Song: jab tak mai.n ne samajhaa jeevan kyaa hai 2/20 jeevan beet gaya Film: Bheegi Palaken ('82) Singer: Kishore Music: Jugal Kishore-Tilak Raj Lyrics: MG Hashmat Cast: Smita Patil, Raj Babbar Source: Music India Ltd (MIL) film soundtrack cassette Pradeep: I know this song ... oh no ... today is Nov 27 :-(-() Arun: Hey, I feel like Killing myself...I don't know this Kishore number. ==> Closet Rafian? He made short work of every Rafi clue! :)) Anil: I thing KK was a great singer but I was never too obsessed with him to keep up with his obscure ones. But then maybe this one is not obscure. What do I know - I have never even heard the much discussed "Neele neele ambar" yet! ==> Watch Anil folks. He is exhibiting all the classic symptoms of the incurable Rafianitis! #6 har haal mein khushaboo mein, kuchh bhi nahi.n kehanaa hai jis haal mein rakhe tu, us haal mein rehanaa hai minnat nahi.n karenge, ham se na tu ye kehanaa o aasamaanwaale, ghaflat mein tu na rehanaa Song: kaaNTo.n mein re(h)ewale, kaaNTo.n se kya Darenge 4/20 hans hanske aafato.n ka ham saamanaa karenge Film: Matlabi Duniya ('61) Singer: Mukesh Music: Sushant Bannerji Lyrics: Ramesh Gupta Cast: ? Source: Spurious cassette: Team Records (Singapore), Mukesh, Vol.1 Roopa: Oh GOD this sounds so infuriatingly familiar. I give up. I'm still sulking about the rude things you said about Mukesh, though. You talked about the "Indian middle-class gent": well THAT'S true anyway; come to think of it, about all Indian "gents", middle- class or otherwise. (Maybe even all gents.) Mukesh songs seem to whine, but I think are saved by the quality of that utterly moving, which possesses some kind of existential hopelessness far beyond what might be your regular social complaint, don't you think? ==> No. Snehal: I disagree with you. If you have realy heard Mukesh, in his early time , he has sung some good songs (in terms of range, and veriety of subject and covering different moods). It's true that later SJ, KA and LP moulded him (like Manna Dey for classicals only), to the kind of songs you have mentioned. Surjit: The name of the MD is Jayanti Joshi. The movie "matalabii duniyaa (1961)" had 4 MD's, the other three being, sushaant banarjii, bharat mehataa and varmaa. #7 buraa ho in bairan ankhiyo.n ka, kar baiThi naadaani pehale aag lagaa di man mein, ab barasaaye paani Song: jogi ham to luT gaye tere pyaar mein 9/20 jane tujh ko, haaye jaane tujh ko khabar kab hogi Film: Shaheed ('65) Singer: Lata Music: Prem Dhawan Lyrics: Prem Dhawan Cast: Manoj, IndraNi Mukherjee Source: ITRANS Song Book. There is an ASC spurious cassette of Purab Aur Pachhim/Shaheed. Sami: Q: Why have u deliberately left out the better-known songs of this MD (from Pavitra Papi and Raat ke Andhere me) Is "better-known" a relative term or did u just feel like making the quiz tough ? Roopa: Adorable, sexy, robust song. I particularly like "jab se tujhko dekha jogi man mein phooli sarson... hae jogi..." What does it for this song is the nice crisp pace, and just the most dramatic transition from the last word of each stanza to the utterly abandoned "hae jogi.." Malini/Balaji: It sounds very familiar. Can't get the mukhDaa however. #8 nayi umange.n, naya zamaanaa nayi tarange.n, naya taraanaa mast nazar se teer chalaakar, koi hame.n taDapaa hi gayaa Song: dil matawaalaa lakh sambhaalaa 8/20 phir bhi kisi par aa hi gaya Film: Bewafa ('52) Singer: Talat Music: AR Qureshi (better known as Alla Rakha) Lyrics: Sarshar Sailani Cast: Raj Kapoor, Nargis, Ashok Kumar Source: Rare Gems: Talat 2-cassette album Sami: It's unfair to expect people to crack this one (and of course the ones which I cudn't crack as well). ==> Point of order, Sami! Don't complain about a song you have cracked :) Anil: Nice song - although I expected better compositions from Ustad Allah Rakha. Maybe I am just too picky? ==> I find the Talat version to be a wonderful song. #9 laDka: amrit ke saagar, mein, shruti mandir ke deepak, ki jyoti alhaD kamalo.n par, paDe hue teer-e-neelam, maaNik moti teri uThati jhukati palako.n mein (2) sooraj dekha, chandaa dekha laDki: main samajh gayee re, deewane, ... Song: teri jheel se gehari aankho.n mein 5/20 Film: Dhuen Ki Lakeer ('74) Singers: Nitin Mukesh-Vani Jairam Music: Shamji Ghanshamji Lyrics: Rameshwar Tyagi Source: Swinging Years: 1966-76 HMV 2-cassette album Sami: Again the better known songs from THokar were left out... Anil: Do you expect me to remember a Nitin Mukesh/Vani Jayram duet? She is fine but he is quite awful. And "Shamji Ghanshamji" - HUH???? #10 aiso hai niDar hai ri braj kaa gwaalaa | beech Dagar chherat matawaalaa | (2) he more raam, he more raam, he more raam Song: baaT chalat nayi chunari rang Daari 8/20 kaiso he bedaradi banawaari Film: Ladki ('53) Singer: Geeta: Music: R. Sudarshanam-Dhaniram Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan Cast: Vyjayanthimala,? Source: Fabulous Years: 1946-56 HMV 2-cassette album Sami: Donno, but guessing: Madhuban me Radhika naache... Roopa: Can't remember the tune, but that's what it must be, yes? ==> Yes :) Anil: The line "he more Ram..." was enough. I heard the Geeta version last year and I was bowled over. However, I still prefer the "Rani Roopmati" duet where Krishna Chonkar almost makes the great Rafi sound like an amateur. #11 laDka: wo phool fazaao.n mein mehake bin piye hi gori ham behake ye mastibhari teri angaDaayi jaise koi bijali leharaayi ye teri jawaani ka zor (2), ke teri paayal thi kamzor Song: mohe aaye na jag se laaj 10/20 main itna zor se naachi aaj ke ghungharu TooT gayi Film: Ek Hi Maqsad ('88) Singers: Asha and Pankaj Udhas Music: Pankaj Udhas Lyrics: Mumtaz Rashid Cast: Om Puri, Divya Rana, Raj Kiran, Danny Source: Cassette: "Chitthi Aai Hai Plus 6 Superhit Film Songs By Pankaj Udhas" Sami: This is a traditional tune... Naushad changed it a little, while PU seems to have retained the original Prashant: Yuck! Snehal: I would rather like to leave this one of Pankaj Udhas. Why ? No comment s Anil: Oh man! Pankaj Udhas!!!!!!! With all those great obscure MD's out there I can't believe you picked this guy. Anyway, even if I had more time to do this quiz, I would make no effort to find out about this one - sorry ! ==> The only song in the quiz people were negative about as a song. Note, HMV includes the Naushad song in the Asha All Time Greats! #12 dekh kitanaa hasee.n mausam hai har taraf ik ajeeb aalam hi jalawe is taraha aaj nikhare hai.n jaise taare zamee.n pe bikhare hai.n Song: mere mehaboob na jaa, aaj ki raat na jaa 11/20 Film: Noor Mahal ('65) Singer: Suman Music: Jani Babu Qawwal Lyrics: Saba Afghani Cast: ? Source: ITRANS Song Book. For recording: Great Hits of Suman Kalyanpur HMV 2-cassette album Roopa: Okay, this must be "tum agar aa sako to aa jaao." Please say it is. #13 laDka: gore badan ki khushabu aisi, kastoori jaise mehake |(2) hoTh tumhaare sindhoori, angaaraa jaise behake laDki: dekh ke tum ko main kya, koi hoor bhi ho to behake |(2) naino.n ke ye taare, hoTho.n ke ye angaare sab kuchh tumhare liye, piya sab kuchh tumhare liye Song: tum itani sundar ho, saari duniyaa divaani hogi 5/20 Film: Anand Ashram ('77) Music: Shyamal Mitra Lyrics: Indeewar Cast: ? Source: RPG Cassette Amanush/Anand Ashram #14 har kisi ko chaahiye tan kaa milann 16/20 Song: aap jaisa koi mere zindagi mein aaye Film: Qurbani ('80) Singer: Nazia Hasan Music: Biddu Lyrics: Indeewar Cast: Zeenat Aman, Feroze Khan, Vinod Khanna Source: Polydor cassette Ratnadeep/Qurbani Ajay: I thought this quiz was titled : GREAT Songs by Obscure Music Directors ==> Yes. ==> Here's an answer that perhaps rates negative points :): Laila main laila #15 dono.n: bheegi hui hawaa hai, ab raat Dhal rahi hai aise mein do dilo.n ki, ik shammaa jal rahi hai ye pyar ka ujaalaa, mil ke amar banaaye.n Song: ye raat ye fizaayen, phir aaye ya na aaye 12/20 aao shamaa bujhaake, ham aaj dil jalaayen Film: Batwaara ('61) Singer: Asha-Rafi Music: S. Madan Lyrics: Majrooh Cast: ? Source: Golden Collection Rafi-Asha Duets Vol-1 4-cassette set Vandana: I know this! Sami: I was expecting all clues to be as easy/difficult as this one... but they turned out to be MUCH more difficult... ==> I have to tell RMIMers about one (correct) answer I received: "ye raat ye pizzaae.n"! Summarizes grad-student life? :)) #16 laDka: bolo ji bolo, ye raaz kholo ham bhi sune.n dil ko thaam yaa to hai dharati, yaa hai gagan yaa to hai sooraj, yaa hai pawan laDki: u.n hu.n, us ka to saajan hai naam Song: nainon mein darpan hai 15/20 Film: Aarop ('73) Singers: Lata-Kishore Music: Bhupen Hazarika Lyrics: Maya Govind Cast: Saira Banu, Vinod Khanna Source: Don't know which cassette/CD has it. I have an EP of the film. Arun Verma might know a more accessible source. ==> One of the best liked clues. #17 binaa tumhaare hame.n, chaand aisa lagataa hai | (2) ke jaise zaqm ho (aalaap) ke jaise zaqm ho, is aasamaa.n ke seene mein birhaa ki aag lagi hai, dhaDakate seene mein Song: binaa tumhaare mazaa kya hai aise jeene mein 4/20 Film: Street Singer ('66) Singer: Rafi Music: Suraj (Name for a group of 3 assistants to S-J: Dattaram, Enoch Daniels, and Sebastian D'Souza) Lyrics: Hasrat Jaipuri Cast: Chandrashekhar and ? Source: Rare Gems: Rafi 2-cassette album This Rafi solo is here by special request of Sami, reinforced by satish! Sami: PLEASE don't accuse me thus! :-) Mere kandhe par bandook rakhkar aap quatl-e-aam kar rahe hain !! Disclaimer: I had NOTHING to do with the above clue... Ashok wanted to torture the RMIMers for some reason and just had to include this vague song.... Vandana: You mean they know the answer already? Then their entries should be disqualified!! (heh! heh! two down!) Anil: Well, what can I say about Rafi? He was the best. ==> Didn't have access to the song I wanted from this film: "ghar ki murgi daal baraabar." The music for the film might satisfy S-J fans, but Chandrashekhar's previous film 'Cha Cha Cha' had far superior music by Iqbal Qureshi. #18 laDka: aa a aa, aa a aa ye bheegati hui fizaa, baras rahi hai chaandani laDki: taaro.n ne mil ke chheD di, madhur milan ki raagini laDka: leke qaraar, aayaa hai pyar kya hai agar mera dil gayaa dono.n:........... Song: mujhko tum jo mile, ye jahaan mil gayaa 7/20 Film: Detective ('58) Singers: Geeta Dutt-Hemant Music: Mukul Roy Lyrics: Shailendra Cast: Mala Sinha-Pradeep Kumar Source: HMV film cassette for Detective Roopa: Love this one. Slow, deliberate, confident. And the voices sound so real, so close. #19 kaise is ka karz chukaaye.n maang ke apani maut ke haatho.n um_r ki sooni see hai ham ne baat kuf_r ki kee hai ham ne Song: ambar ki ek paak suraahi 9/20 baadal ka ek jaam uThaakar ghoonT chaandani pee hai ham ne baat kuf_r ki kee hai ham ne Film: Kadambari ('75) Singer: Asha Music: Ustad Vilayat Khan Lyrics: Amrita Preetam Cast: Shabana Azmi, Vijay Arora, and terrific performance by Chand Usmani. Source: ISB! All Time Great: Asha two-cassette album ==> I had deliberately used the Kannada (and apparently Marathi also) word for novel, kaadambari, as a hint. Surjit: Sir, your Bombay background is showing here. A Hindiwallah would have written "the upanyaas by Amrita Pritam". Since upanyaas (novel) is called kaadambarii in Marathi, you gave away the name of the movie! #20 laDka: bewafaa ham nahin, bewafaa tum nahin | phir wo jazbaat kyon so gaye |(2) laDki: pyar tum ko bhi hai, pyar ham ko bhi hai |(2) faasale phir ye kyon ho gaye Song: ye bataa de mujhe zindagi 7/20 pyar ke raah ke hamsafar, kis tarah gan gaye ajnabi Film: Saath Saath ('82) Singers: Chitra-Jagjit Music: Kuldeep Singh Lyrics: Javed Cast: Deepti Naval, Faroukh Shaikh Source: Exciting Era 1976-86 CD. Also cassette: "12 Superhits of Jagjit and Chitra Singh" Anil: I like her. He gets boring after a while - IMO. #21 geeto.n ka toofaan hai naach ki bahaar hai, naach ki bahaar hai paanch aane ka das aanaa (3) (said very fast) are waapas nahi.n jaanaa, jaanaa, jaanaa waapas nahi.n jaanaa ........... Song: din ho suhaana aaj pehli taareeq hai 10/20 Film: Pehli Taareekh ('54) Singer: Kishore Music: Sudhir Phadke Lyrics: Qamar Jalalabadi Cast: Nirupa Roy, Raja Nene, Agha Source: ITRANS Song-Book. For recording: Kishore Kumar: A Retrospect HMV 4-cassette album Snehal: I would have loved to see a stanza from any of the song of Malti Madhav. Particularly the song 'Nainon Se Bahe ??? Dhara, Man Me Mere Angaare Hai' a gem by Sudhir Phadke-Lata. (Of crs, 'Baandh Priti Phul Dor' is the all time great, besides this). Anil: A Sudhir Phadke composition that I can't remember! #22 laDka: tarango.n mein dhaDkan, larazataa jigar | raqs karate kamal, thartharaataa bha.nwar |(2) ye chheeTe.n kisi ki tamannaa na ho |(2) kahi.n aap ke haatho.n tanahaa na ho Song: is nadi ko meraa aainaa maan lo 4/20 Film: Chashme Baddoor ('81) Singers: Hoimnoti Shukla and ? (Hariharan?) Music: Rajkamal Lyrics: Indu Jain Cast: Deepti Naval, Faroukh Shaikh Source: My source was a recording I did from a local radio program. Chetan: Chashme-baddoor! Damn... just can't remember this either.... Roopa: Could it be the boat song from that Deepti Naval film? #23 [mukhDa] koi dil mein hai aur, koi hai nazar mein mohabbat ke, sapane.n, main kis pe luTaa_u.n isi kashmakash mein, jiye jaa rahaa hu.n [stanza] udhar dil mohabbat mein, unko diyaa hai idhar farz kaa, bojh, sar pe liyaa hai ari zindagi tu ne, ye kya kiyaa hai Song: kise yaad rakhoo.n, kise bhool jaa_oo.n 7/20 Film: Anuraag ('50? '56?) Singer: Mukesh Music: Mukesh Lyrics: Indeewar Cast: Usha Kiran, Mukesh Source: Spurious cassette: Team Records (Singpore), Mukesh Vol.1 Chetan: You see I am not a great Mukesh fan :) satish: I never forget the word "kashmakash" in the start. Hate the music. Sami: I cudn't care less about Mukesh the hero and the MD. I'd rather see the song "Kai sadion se..." or "Woh tere pyaar ka gham...." here instead of this obscure number. Snehal: Mukesh was not only MD, Hero and Singer but also Producer of this film. This song is one of the first five best of Mukesh. It will go a long way in the history. If he had sung only this alone, still he would have become, as great a singer as he is considered today. #24 laDki: mast nazaare, chaand sitaare raat ke mehamaa.n hai ye saare laDka: (hmm hmmm hmm hm) laDki: uTh jaayegi shab ki mehafil noor-e-sahar ke sun ke naqqaare laDka: ho na ho dubaaraa mulaaqaat Song: Dhalti jaaye raat, keh le dil ki baat 11/20 shammaa paravaane ka na hogaa phir saath Film: Razia Sultana ('61) Music: Lachhiram Tamar Lyrics: Anand Bakshi Cast: ? Source: Rafi-Asha Golden Collection, Vol. 1 4-cassette album Vandana: Recalled this song in the last moment!! I have been singing this over and over in my mind, but couldn't get the starting line!! What luck! Sami: Now, THIS is a nice clue! Roopa: Sort of a cousin of "ye raat ye fizaayen," isn't it? But better, I thin k. 25 laDka: aankho.n se chhalake teri~~, amrit ki dhaaraa~~ tera saath gori mujh ko~~, jeevan se pyaaraa~~ mile ham tum donon jaise, lehar se kinaaraa Song: roop tumhaara aankhon se pee loo.n 5/20 keh do agar tum, marke bhi jee loo.n Film: Sapera ('61) Singer: Manna Dey Music: Ajit Merchant Lyrics: Indeewar Cast: Ranjan, ? Source: Talat, Manna Dey, Hemant Anmol Ratan 10-cassette set Vandana: ??????? *blink* #26 laDka: door gagan mein, dekho chamake aashaao.n ke taare aashaao.n ke taare, hilamil pyare pyare laDki: badali mein chhup kar taaro.n ke sang |(2) chandaa kare ishaare, chandaa kare ishaare dono.n: kis ki lagan mein, aaj pawan hai baago.n mein ikalaati Song: lauT gayaa, gham ka zamaana 6/20 Film: Naya Aadmi ('55) Singers: Lata-Hemant Music: MS Visswanathan and V. Ramamaurthi Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan Cast: ? Source: All Time Great: Hemant Kumar 2-cassette album Sami: Shanky-J of Tamil films... u call that an honour ??? :-) ==> Yes. Roopa: I HAVE to know this one! Of COURSE I do! But what? WHAT? Okay, I just KNOW, just KNOW. OH NO! Vandana: Chae! Vishwanathan Ramamurthi paattu theriyama poiduthu! What kind of a Tamilian am I?! All this after being labeled a Tamil chauvinist! Snehal: One of the best Hemant-Lata duet. A rare gem. #27 mad_bhari chanchal ye shaam deti hai tujh ko payaam patthar pe kar shaayari tujh ko hamaaraa salaam tu hai jahaa.n ham wahaa.n jhoome zamee.n aasamaa.n Song: tere khayaalon mein ham, tere hi baahon mein ham 9/20 Film: Geet Gaya Pattharon Ne ('64) Singer: Asha Music: Ramlal Lyrics: Hasrat Jaipuri Cast: Rajashri, Jeetendra Source: HMV film cassette GGPN/Jal Bin Machali Nritay Bin Bijali Roopa: Lovely. Strange, mystical melody. Which raag, I wonder? Anil: Very easy. Kishori Amonkar's name in the clue was a dead give-away. A great composer though. "Pankh hote" will live forever. #28 laDka: ye husn tera khilataa hua, saa gulaab hai (2) aankhe.n teri haseen, ka.nwal ka shabaab hai tu laajawaab hai wo khush_naseeb hai teri, mehafil mein jo gayaa Song: main to tere haseen khayaalon mein kho gayaa 7/20 Film: Sangram (''65) Singer: Rafi Music: Lala-Asad-Sattar Lyrics: ? Cast: ? Source: ASC cassette: Tribute to Mohammad Rafi Roopa: I spent nights thinking of this one, and I may still be wrong. Why does the stanza remind me of dozens of similar Rafi songs? Two you mentioned, and then "jaane bahaar husn tera bemisaal hai." Whether or not I'm right, the above song is stunning. Full of melodic agility and punch. Anil: When Rafi sings like this I get a chill up my spine! #29 mil jaaye tera pyar to, qismat sa.nwaar lenge ham |(2) kadamo.n me tere zindagi, yu.n hi guzaar lenge ham |(2) dil mein na rakh sake to kya, nazaro.n se bhi giraaoge Song: Thehro zaraa si der to, aake chale hi jaaoge 5/20 tumhi kaho karenge kya, yaad jo ham ko aaoge Film: Savera ('58) Singer: Geeta Dutt Music: Shailesh Lyrics: Prem Dhawan Cast: Meena Kumari, Ashok Kumar Source: Geeta Dutt Golden Collection 4-cassette album Roopa: What a killer! One of the best Getta Dutts, second only to "Piya aiso jiya mein samaaye gayo re," and that too by a fraction. Makes me think it could have been a Mubarak Begum song; reminds me of "bemurravat bevafaa." Snehal: Also this just out of curiocity: Is this MD same person who sung in Aag (1948) under Ram Ganguli with Shamshad that famous duet 'Dekh Chaand Ki Or' ? ==> Good question! I hope some nettors can answer this one. Anil: Are you sure Geeta has more than one song in "Savera"? I remember seeing this movie less than a year ago and I just remember the one mujra song by her - which was quite good. I have no idea about this one. Another great composer though. ==> Incredible as it might seem, the song is not used in the film! How can anyone be so foolish? If the song is just played during the interval, I will forgo my cigarette and sit! #30 bas itani si hai daasataa.n bachpan ke pyar ki |(2) do phool khilte khilte, gulshan ujaD gayaa gulshan ujaD gayaa Song: do roz mein vo pyar ka aalam guzar gayaa 10/20 barbaad karne aaya tha, barbaad kar gayaa Film: Pyar Ki Raahen ('59) Singer: Mukesh Music: Kanu Ghosh Lyrics: Prem Dhawan Cast: ? Source: Mukesh Anmol Ratan 10-cassette set Ajay: Yes, Kanu Ghosh, quite a talent. He used to be with the AIR chorus song department. I can never forget the tune he has given the Bangla patriotic song "Aamaar jonmobhoomi". My query on RMIM for its lyrics some months back was futile. #31 jhilamil wo, taare~~ stanza: jhilamil wo, taare, kahaa.n gaye saare manamaani chale, bujh jaaye Song: haaye re wo din kyon naa aaye 5/20 Film: Anuradha ('60) Singer: Lata Music: Pandit Ravi Shankar Lyrics: Shailendra Cast: Balraj Sahni, Leela Naidu, Abhi Bhattacharya Source: There is an ASC cassette that has 4 songs each from Dhool Ka Phool, Anuradha, Sanjog, and Dil Ek Mandir. Ajay: Hahahaha satish: What is clue 31 supposed to mean? Vandana: Is that all? Neeraj: If this was an easy quiz, to chalo ek aesa daal diya, yahan to abhi hum half mark par bhi nahiin pahunche, ise kaun kahan se dhoondega ? Sami: My answer is shorter than your clue.... it's got 0 words in it!! :-) Roopa: don't DO this! Is it "haaye re vo din kyon na aaye"? No hints tells me it's famous song. Anil: Way too easy - even with no clue. A song from "Godaan" would have been more challenging or a non-Lata song from "Anuradha". #32 ye raahe.n kahaa.n se aati, ye raahe.n kahaa.n le jaati raahe.n dharati ke tan par, aakaash ki faili baahe.n Song: ham chaahen yaa na chaahen 4/20 hamraahi bana leti hain, jeevan ki raahen Film: Phir Bhi ('71) Singer: Hemant Music: Raghunath Seth Lyrics: Pandit Narendra Sharma Cast: ? Source: All Time Great: Hemant Kumar 2-cassette album Roopa: Of course I know this! (This phrase is becoming my "taqiya qalaam," I must say. I'm going to kill myself when the answer comes for this one. But no for now. BUT, I'm going to do a explore a few more avenues to figure out this one. I can SING the damn clue, but the mukhda just won't come. Expect (perhaps) a note from me later tonight. #33 sur hai meeTha, la_y hai meeThi, us se meeThi raagiNi us se meeThe hoTh hai.n tere, aur teri aawaaz hai Song: baadal kaala, koyal kaali, us se kaali raat hai 4/20 Film: Ang Se Ang Laga Le ('74) Singer: Kishore Music: Pradeep Roychowhury Lyrics: Naqsh Layalpuri Cast: ? Source: I got the lyrics from RMIM. It was posted some months ago by an RMIMer that I don't remember seeing since: Indrani Bose. Arun Verma tells me that the song is also on Kishore Rare Gems CD. Roopa: I know this song, but I never paid any attention to the first lines. So now I might as well be punished for my negligence. Anil: Oh no! It's KK again! #34 Mubarak Begum: o_o, o_o_o aalaap by chorus Rafi: (slowly, no accompaniment) rain bhaari hai, gehraa andhera haath de lo, haatho.n mein mera rain bhaari hai (instruments and chorus come in, as Rafi continues) so gaye mandiro.n ke pujaari goonjati hai muraliya tumhaari aatamaa jhoomati hai.n hamaari Mubarak Begum: dil khinchaa jaa rahaa hai hamaaraa (2) Song: devataa tum ho meraa sahaara 6/20 main ne thaamaa hai daaman tumhaara Film: Daaera ('53) Singers: Mubarak Begum, Rafi, and chorus Music: Jamal Sen Lyrics: Kaif Bhopali Cast: Meena Kumari, Nasir Khan Source: ASC compilation cassette: Rare Old Film Songs. It is also on HMV's Yaadon Ki Manzil 12-cassette set. Roopa: You describe it so well. It must be a true beauty. No, I don't know. Snehal: I don't have words either. Time realy seems to be stopping while listening to this one..!! #35 rang hamaare, teri jawaani | ban jaaye ek prem kahaani |(2) door kisi ko le le jaa ke, sun lu.n aur sunaa_u.n dil ke kore kaagaz par ulfat ki laqeer banaa_u.n aa, ................. Surjit: The real name of Chic Chocolate was, A. X. Vaaz. He was an assistant to O. P. Nayyar and C. Ramchandra, mainly. He gave music for just three movies, nadaan (1951), rangiilii (1952) and kar bhalaa (1956). He died in 1967 at age 55 in Bombay. ==> According to satish, he has another film to his credit, 'Hulla Gulla' and he was arranger/assistant to S-J for Dil Ek Mandir. #36 pyaas le aayi hai saaqi tere, maikhaane mein Daal de husn-o-rooho.n bhari, paimaane mein dil ki sheeshe mein utar aayi hai, soorat teri Song: khoobsoorat hai teri tarah shikaayat teri 3/20 is shikaayat se jhalakati hai mohabbat teri Film: Aasmaan Mahal ('65) Singer: Mahendra Kapoor Music: JP Kaushik Lyrics: Ali Sardar Jafri Cast: Prithviraj Kapoor, Dilip Raj, Surekha Parkar Source: Radio memory Anil: Well, it MK again. Quite appropriate for RJGK 28, I thought. That goes for spectators and for contestants, who lined up at the starting crease only to walk away! Entries The Early Bird Awards: I was a bit startled to get two entries back-to-back just after a week of posting the quiz, the first one from Australia sent by an RMIMer whose server had delivered him a truncated quiz! Here is the list of the 25 inveterate fans of Hindi film music in all its splendor,in the order in which I received the 20 entries. Friday, 17 Nov. 1. Pashant 2. Vish Krishnan Saturday, 18 3. satish subramanyan Tuesday, 21 4. Arun Verma Wednesday, 22 5. Team: Shalini Razdan ShashiKant Joshi urf Pintu Diwana 6. Team: Prince Neeraj Malhotra Friday, 24 7. Sami Monday, 27 8. The wife-and-husband team of Harmesh Kaur and Surjit Singh 9. Pradeep Dubey 10. Pavan 11. Anil Hingorani 12. Chetan Vinchhi ==> "Record low se to bach gaye. :))" 13. Ajay P. Nerurkar 14. Roopa 15. Team: Kalyan Kolachala Atul Gupta 16. Ambrish Sundaram 17. Abhay Avachat 18. Vandana Venkatesan 19. Snehal Oza 20. Team: Balaji Malini Well, I was hoping for 48 and am glad to have more than 11! The number is a bit inflated, because of the coaxing, cajoling and coercing that I did and one RJGKer, who chose to send in a notional entry with just the first clue answered (lining up only to walk away!). Interestingly, only five team entries, fewer than has been customary of late. I thank all the contestants and also everyone who read and enjoyed the quiz! General comments The first comment (from satish) came well before the quiz was posted, so did the last comment (also from satish) well after the deadline! satish: You better stop your S-J bashing; else, you won't have many entries! Neeraj: A very well written intro. Seems like a lot of heart and soul has gone into it. ==> Well, it turns out Neeraj wrote that after reading Part I only. And after she got to Part II? Now that I have had some time to take a shot at this quiz, my original impression remains unchanged. Sorry to say, I _do_ find this quiz *VERY TOUGH*. Part of the reason may or may not be the songs themselves but definitely not enough sub-clues are a contributing factor. You may say, but I do have sub-clues & hints about other movies of these MDs etc. But not really. Yes you have given us a list of singers & MDs. Yes, that is helpful, but to even get to this song by permutation combination, one has to crack others. I don't want to go on, but I thought you were a big force behind creating these RJGK rules so whatever happened to that. Prince: Tough quiz. Violates the corresponding guidelines in the Nerurkar document :) the songs must be popular. In this case, they _were_ popular, which is unfair to us young 'uns :) ==> That was when he read the quiz. And after his team submitted the answers? I haven't heard quite a few of the songs. Before my umr :-) But most of them were pretty nice. satish: Looks like an easy quiz ==> Actually, what he said was "Looks like an easy quiz :)" He stubbornly insists that I can't edit out the smiley! Ambrish: I think this quiz was a bit on the tougher side. ==> No smiley? He must have a talent for understatements! Shalini: First of all, may I commend you on compiling a superb quiz!! Its all that a quiz of this type should be, entertaining, amusing, descriptive, coherent, edifying and bless your heart, very comprehensive!! You get an enthusiastic round of applause from me for your efforts. Now having said that, I am convinced that you must be a really evil man for having concocted this quiz as a means of torturing poor souls like me!. :-)) You know, while I was studying at Georgia Tech, we students coined a name for extremely difficult exams; we called them "shafts" and the professors who inflicted them on us, "Shaft Professors." You sir, would have been regarded as the King of Shafts! :-))) I must say participating in this quiz has been truly a humbling experience. In any case, here are the answers Shashi and I have been able to come up with so far. We are waiting on divine intervention for the rest! :-) P. S. If you happen to know, would you be kind enough to tell me where and how I may obtain copies of all these gems that you have uncovered?! I would be eternally grateful to you and it would give YOU a chance to atone! :-)) ==> Thanks for the suggestion, Shalini. Along with the answers, I have tried to indicate possible sources for a recording. Vandana: This has been the toughest but my most enjoyable RJGK!! A word of warning: This RJGK is going to go down in history as the most difficult one. But once u give out the results and solutions, I am going to track down each and every one of these songs, if I don't have them already, because from ur descriptions, they shd all be absolute gems. ==> All, except a couple. Snehal: Thanks for providing with this opportunity to remember some old songs that have become a part of my life now. Anil: Overall, a pretty tough quiz! Wasn't the theme "Popular songs by obscure MD's". Do you really think a lot of these songs were "popular"? I'm sure they are all excellent songs but I am not sure if they were all widely heard. As far as the clues go, some were extremely easy. There were a few that I had to think real hard to come up with a response from memory. Of the ones I did not get, I think I know most of them and many are on the tip of my tongue but they refuse to come out. I have been literally banging my head since noon to get these but to no avail. Lastly, my database of songs was of almost no help since you very cleverly picked songs that are probably not yet available on CD's. Personally, I loved doing this quiz since there was some challenge and the fact that I could not get almost one third of the songs. Hopefully, I will learn some new old songs and include them in my collection. Also, some of the forgotten songs have been brought back to memory - which is always a nice thing. Kalyan: Thanks for a nice quiz. It's education for people like me. However given the large number of clues and the level of difficulty we feel the time isn't enough. satish: How does one more week help? I wonder.. Roopa: Thanks for a most engaging quiz. It's driving me nuts of course, and that means it's working. I particularly liked your introductory account of the "ideological" reasons why lesser known artists interest you. Very thoughtful, very just concerns with marginal (as opposed to mainstream) voices. satish: Which of the Rare Gems should I buy to make my life easier.. Kalyan: The quiz came at a wrong time for me. It is a time when I was trying to have a bigger collection of the more popular MD's. I wish some other MD's somewhere between the popular and obscure (eg Kanu Roy, Husnlal-Bhagatram, Chitragupta :-) Sajjad, Khemchand Prakash etc) could also have been included as it's not possible to have an RJGK dedicated to them. Arun: Here are my answers to RJGK. Well, not a good attempt, but it was quite enjoyable. Thanks. Also, I took a very "modular" approach for solving this quiz, first guessing the MD and singer(s) (from the list you provided and comments in the question), and then taking a shot at the song..., and it worked..if you hadn't provided the list of MDs and Singers..I might have got only half a dozen :) Pavan: RJGK-28 appears to be the toughest RJGK I have come across :-(. But I shall not give up. The clues are excellent. I esp like the way you reveal(?) the MD's name. As an independent project I am trying to crack all the MDs of the songs though I do not get the songs themselves. Hope to get partial credit for that :) Ajay: Will partial credit be given for the right MD name on every song? If so, mail back so that I can do the needful :-) However, even without that I am confident of smashing your record on RJGK 27 :-) Vandana: Do I get partial credit for repeating the question? Sami: I guess I've already exhausted my comments, and have very little to add... I still can't figure out why u left that wonderful Mukesh song "Kai sadion se.." out.... perhaps it was too easy for this quiz :-) Final comments: 1. Pstats were given which is a definite plus. The rhyming pattern also helped in some cases, but the songs were to difficult to crack out of memory. Poor souls like me who don't possess hundreds of cassettes/CD's are massacred in such quizzes. Future RJGK organizers, kindly have pity on us. 2. 36 clues, IMHO, are way too many. The interest of the participant is lost. 3. Length of subclues was too long. It is physically draining to read all that while solving the quiz. Although I did love all the informative text, I'd rather read all that in a separate post and not in a quiz. Vandana: Enjoying you series on songs that did not make it into the RJGK, and am glad they didn't make it into the RJGK! Neeraj: Are you trying to justify by posting songs not included in this quiz that your quiz is really not that difficult ? It still is :). satish: Just was wondering, if you post a song that is included in the quiz in the "Songs not used" series, what are the chances that people will actually recognize it? :) (esp. the "jhilamil vo taare") ==>Me: "That was a mean thing to say :))" and got back: :) you were also mean in setting the quiz :) Pavan: Looked around quite a bit but could not locate the songs in anyone's collection around here. Is it possible for you to arrange for a compilation of the songs of rjgk 28 and the ones that did not make it to rjgk 28? I am interested in acquiring a copy of the songs. It would be great if you can get the songs recorded and mail them to me. I must say that if the purpose of rjgk is to get people to search for the songs, then yours was a highly successful one. The clues were good and were just enough for anyone to start looking for the songs (except the infamous clue #31 :)) satish: Bad news: Most of the so-called 'RMIM gurus' seem to be in trouble. Good news: Most of the so-called 'RMIM gurus' seem to be in trouble. Late news: Most of the so-called 'RMIM gurus' seem to be in trouble. Sad news: Most of the so-called 'RMIM gurus' seem to be in trouble. all this imply that there is, More pressure on the next RJGK.. :( Results First place: Vish Krishnan (36/36) I printed out his answers the Friday night I received it and started reading it on the sub-way. I was so stunned I missed my stop! What can I say? A quiz covering songs from early 50s to late 80s and he aces it in no time. Congratulations. His answer is so chockful of interesting information that I am going to invoke the conditions of the quiz and post it on RMIM! Second place: Prince and Neeraj (28) The team that was one of the two most vitriolic critics of RJGK 28 (Sami was the other) turns in an outstanding entry, just prior to Prince's India trip. A very resourceful team, no wonder they make for formidable opponents in quizzes! Third place: Harmesh Kaur and Surjit Singh (25) I have noticed that when cracking a quiz this team puts away the Encyclopaedia and uses only the resources available to all the nettors. (Note that according to them ISB is a very valuable resource.) After the answers are announced, they use the Encyclopadia to fill in the gaps as a service to RMIM. They deserve our kudos for their sense of fairplay. Fourth place: Anil Hingorani (23) I believe he spent just a lunch break on the quiz. Wish he had continued with it during the coffee break! Honourable mentions: Roopa (19) Balaji and Malini (18) Arun (17) Sami (16) Shalini and Shashi urf Pintu Diwana (16) Statistics for the clues Here's how the clues fared in being answered correctly by RJGKers. I am following the nice format developed by Shashi in RJGK 27. # Song No. of right answers/comment - ---- ---------------------------- 1 kuhu kuhu bole koyaliya 19 As expected (why not 100%?!) 14 aap jaisa koi mere zindagi mein aaye 16 OK, but should be 100%. 16 nainon mein darpan hai 15 Better than I expected! 15 ye raat ye fizaayen 12 Roughly, as I expected. 3 zulfon ki ghaTa lekar 12 Roughly, as I expected. 4 tum nacho ras barse 11 Roughly, as I expected. 12 mere mehaboob na jaa 11 Is in ISB, folks! 24 Dhalti jaaye raat 11 Roughly, as I expected. 30 do roz mein vo pyar ka aalam guzar gayaa 10 Is in ISB. 21 din ho suhaanaa aaj pehli taareeq hai 10 Sould have been 100%! Some thoughts * Within the range of MDs I was considering, it was easy to pick songs by Mukesh and Geeta Dutt. It wasn't so easy to pick SOLOS of Rafi or Lata! Hemant and Talat songs were also tough. Somewhere in the middle were Kishore, Manna Dey, and Asha. * Proportionally, more duets than solos began to suggest themselves! * Could I have made the quiz significantly easier? I wonder. A few of the suggestions for bringing left out songs into the quiz would not have made more than marginal difference, if that. Note that I was tring to pick at the very bottom of the MD pecking order. Does that mean the theme was wrong? I don't think I can answer it. * It would have perhaps made some difference if I had reduced the number of clues by a third. I still wouldn't know which ones! * There were questions about some specific MDs who were not included. I did consider many other MDs and ended up dropping them as a group. Let me mention a few categories of that kind so that other RMIMers will be inspired to offer those themes in the future! ** Initially, I had considered a number of MDs of the past, who had some presence well into the 50s, or whose songs are still remembered: e.g., Gyan Dutt, Ram Ganguli, K. Dutta, Timir Baran, Vinod, and perhaps Bulo C. Rani. I finally decided it was inappropriate to include them in my theme. I believe a set of such MDs can support an RJGK. ** MDs who are infrequent but not obscure, e.g., C. Arjun, Dattaram, Iqbal Qureshi, GS Kohli, Snehal Bhatkar, Nashad, et al. I think it is possible to have an RJGK on specifically named set of such MDs. ** It should be possible to do an RJGK on women MDs, perhaps anchored by the work of Usha Khanna and the more accessible songs of Saraswati Devi. (e.g., Is Jayanti Joshi a woman MD?) ** Finally, what about those MDs who are/were primarily involved in art-house films: Vanraj Bhatia, Ajit Varman, Sharngadeva, Rajat Dholakia, et al? Don't know about this one. :)) Thanks and over to satish. Ashok PS: Let me know when RMIMers are ready for "Jaane Anjaane II: Jaane pehchane geet, anjaane geetkaaron se" :))
