Here's an excerpt from the first RJGK which describes it: ______________________________________________________________________________ OK, so here's how the quiz goes: You don't need to name a singer, actor, lyricist, MD etc. All you have to do is to IDENTIFY the song. The clues given below are lines occuring somewhere in the song (not necessarily the opening stanza or the opening line of any other stanza). Eg: Clue: "Logon ko aatay hain do nazar ham magar........." Ans: This is, as you all must've guessed, part of the song from Sholay. Hence the correct answer would be "Ye dosti hum nahin chhoRengay......" ______________________________________________________________________________ It's as simple as that. But remember the golden rule: PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS ON THE NET. E-mail them directly to us at fj076@cleveland.freenet.edu ______________________________________________________________________________ ***************************************************************************** RJGK 30 - STRICTLY TANDEM SONGS ***************************************************************************** We were introduced to RJGK, nay RMIM, through one of Guri's chance posts on SCI. This was his post to inform about his RJGK on Sahir. Excellent quiz that one. Needless to say, we were hooked. Ever since we have been enjoying RMIM, not the least because this probably is one of the cleanest groups. As we tried to find our bearings in this group, more RJGKs followed. Soon after, Abhay Avachat's Chitrahaar series started. These two have been among our most engaging activities on the usenet. Finally now the time has come. Our own RJGK.Whew! Are we glad that finally we're ready with the quiz ! We debated and discussed a lot on what should be the theme. We immediately decided against a personality as the theme. This was for two reasons. We had many personal favourites and some conflicting ones between the two of us. Second and more importantly, most artistes, we had some decent knowledge about, had already been covered in previous RJGKs. After considering several themes carefully, including some crazy ones, we chose the easiest - tandem songs. Imagine our horror when we saw our carefully chosen theme going to pieces in the "long songs" thread. However, this also meant that an already easy quiz would become easier, hopefully, prompting a lot more participation. Tandem songs are that category of songs which appear more than once (usually twice) in a film.Tandem songs have served a special purpose in Hindi (Indian) films. Usually, they have been used to contrast the mood depicted in different versions, giving rise to what are commonly referred to as happy and sad versions like 'Yeh zindagi usi ki hai' in 'Anarkali' and 'Jo wada kiya' in 'Tajmahal'.Sometimes, it is to depict how the romantic pair has similar thoughts, in spite of the distance in time and space between them. An example would be 'Ehsaan tera hoga' from 'Junglee'. Some other times they unite families like in 'YaadoN ki baraat'. Some other times tandems have resulted simply because somebody important associated with the film thought that a particular song would, may be, sound better in someone's else's voice. One instance being, apparently, in 'Daag', Lata's version of 'ai mere dil kahiN aur chal', which has a markedly slower tempo than Talat's (the better) version. ABOUT THIS QUIZ : ________________ This quiz deals with the specific category of male/female tandems, i.e., to say that each of the songs in this quiz has at least (usually) one male and one female solo versions of the song in the same film. Male/Female tandems also give a good yardstick to compare the artistes against each other. Unlike duets where one has to 'co-operate' with the other and thereby possibly make adjustments, in a tandem, if solo, one has total freedom. Maybe some interesting comparisons will result. Sorry Rafians and KKKlaners ('Tum bin jaauN kahaaN' is not featured :) ). There are 30 clues in the quiz. Each clue features a different male/female combination. As usual (with the exception of Ashok's RJGK :) ) we claim that all are well known songs. Songs featured are from films between 40's and 90's, if only to make the task of having these many combinations easy. Note : We have taken a few liberties as to whether a song is really a solo or not, e.g. by our yardstick 'na tum hameiN jaano' featured in the previous RJGK would be a male/female tandem even though Suman K contributes in Hemant K's version (she doesn't really sing though, only hums) Some statistical info regarding the songs in this quiz. The following singers appear in more than one combination : Male : Hemant Kumar 2 Rafi 5 Talat 2 Kishore 4 Mukesh 3 Yesudas 2 SPB 2 Female : Lata 13 Asha 6 Geeta Dutt 2 Suman K 2 Usha Khanna 2 There are other singers(10 male and 5 female), who feature only once each in this quiz. As we mentioned earlier, the songs selected are from 40's all the way to 90's. The distribution is as follows 40's - 2 50's - 7 60's - 6 70's - 6 80's - 6 90's - 3 Here are the clues. We have divided the clues into what we think should be the 4 categories, which are 1) Easy 2) Not so easy 3) Somewhat difficult and 4) Difficult. Just a small note before you launch into the quiz, read the lines following the clue carefully, at times they may give you info about the movie or even the mukhda itself. Happy solving ! I. The easy clues ------------------------- 1. os nayan ki unke, meri lagi ko bujhaaye naa tan man bhigo de aake, aisi ghataa koi chhaaye naa "Knock knock". "Who's there ?" "Opportunity !" "Can't be, opportunity knocks only once." Well RMIMers, believe us, this is opportunity and hear the 'knock'. Some one recently asked for its lyrics. 2. aaj agar bhar aayee hai, boonde baras jaayengee, kal kyaa pataa, kiske liye, aaNkheiN taras jaayengi This song with a simple but elegant tune is from an adaptation of a well known book (No, no, we're not giving away the name of the book). Crisp direction and sensitive performances by the leading artistes made this movie very watchable. 3. Dhal gaye, nadaaN woh aaNchal ke saaye, rah gaye, raste meiN apne paraaye One of Salil Chowdhury's signature tunes. 4. phir na jaane kis liye dil se bhulaa baiThe hameiN Love is a great leveller. Only love made me realize what life is. A Rafi clone(well, at least some RMIMers think he's a Rafi clone) sings the male version of this song. 5. seekhaa nahiN, hamaare dil ne, pyaar meiN dheeraj khonaa aag se tap ke, bhi jo nikhare, hai wohi sachchaa sonaa Here Kishore Kumar sings for himself under SJ. It's a small world !! 6. Jee ye chaahe, banaa ke aaNchal, tum ko lapetooN tan pe, kabhi ye chaahooN, maiN uD jaauN, tum ko liye gagan pe, 'Himalay ki god mein' is where probably the heroine of this film landed after a sensational debut. 7. tere jahaaN meiN, aisaa nahiN ke pyaar na ho, jahaaN umeed ho iski, wahaaN nahiN miltaa Male version by a singer who often plays his own fiddle(?), also well known for singing non-film songs with his wife. A song from the 80's. 8. har ek phool, kisi yaad ki mahak si hai, tere khayaal se jaagi huyi fizaayeiN haiN, ye peD haiN, ke ye pyaar ki duaayeiN haiN Probably the only surviving aspect of this film in public memory. A song from 80's. This is one of the two song in this quiz with not the usual two, but three solo versions in the movie. II. Not so easy clues ----------------------------- 9. raat hai bheegi hui, rang meiN Doobi hui, aaj hai duniyaa meri, pyaar se mehki hui Can there be smoke without fire ? Heard that one before. How 'bout this - Can there be rain without clouds ? Well apparently it happened in '63. Life is so beautiful, all it needs is you. 10. koi jo Daale, tum pe nayanwaa, dekhaa na jaaye, mose sajanwaa, jale moraa manwaa, jale moraa man...waa A rare foray into film singing by this classical artiste, here singing a Majrooh creation in the 80's. 11. man nagari meri, sooni paDi thi, asha dwaare pe, kab se khaDi thi, haath meiN pee kaa aaNchal sajni, aate aate chhooT gayaa .......and the mukhda follows right after Dilip Kumar stars in this 'unusual love story'. From the era when Mukesh was still the regular voice for Yusuf Khan. 12. khalti hai yeh, paas ki doori, jalti aas adhoori kisko koyi dosh lagaaye, sabke sang majboori Let alone the light, not even the end of the tunnel is apparent, rather there is darkness all around. 13. hote haiN chhoTe dil ke, lambi zubaan waale, dete haiN maal khoTaa, uNchee dukaaN waale, This well known remake of a South Indian film stars the father of a very well known actress. This is a good example of songs where one version presents counter arguments for the arguments in the other version. 14. dharti pe, ambar ki aaNkhoN se barasti hai, ik roz yehi booNdeiN, phir baadal banati hai, The slowness of this composition in Shivranjani belies the title of the movie it appears in. 15. saagar ki baahoN meiN, maujeiN haiN jitni, hamko bhi tumse, mohabbat hai utni, A hit triangle movie of the 90's starring Madhuri, with the same name as one old movie. Incidentally, that old movie also had a tandem song. 16. khoye sab pehchaane, khoye saare apne, samay ki chhalni, se gir gir ke, khoye saare sapne A landmark film for composer of this song. A must hear for all his fans. During her recent trip to U.S. Lata sang this song specially in each of her performances. III. Somewhat difficult ------------------------------ 17. mujhko kismet ne banaayaa, gadle paani ka kaNwal, khaak meiN mil mil gaye sab, aarzooON ke mahal, kyaa khabar thi, yuN meri taqdeer jaayegi badal This movie features Shammi Kapoor, in his pre Rafi, pre 'Tum saa nahiN dekhaa' days. Above lines are from the female version. 18. yeh hawaa ...., sab le gayee ... karwaaN ke nishaaN bhi uDaa le gayee This song had not two, but three solo versions in this highly acclaimed (art?) film. The second of the two such songs in this quiz. 19. logoN ne tyaag diye jeevan, ke preet diloN meiN palti rahe A pleasing song from the 70's about giving unto others. The male version (the better version) was sung by this accomplished singer form the South. Apart from the customary male/female versions, there is also a duet version of this song in the movie. 20. neend meiN Doobi huyi hai, sharbati aaNkheiN jaa tujhe, meri kasam, meri kasam hai jaa A classic, from one of the most respected M.D.'s of all time. With 'luck' you should be able to crack this one. 21. mat bhoolo, hai pyaar ik naag, uglegaa zahar bhari aag, yeh dil ko jalaaye, ye sholoN pe sulaaye yeh phooloN se uThaaye, to kaaNtoN meiN rulaaye kaleje ko thaam, pukaaregaa naam Recently, someone called this category of songs as scat songs, songs with highly rhyming, but nonsensical words. The above words are from the female version, though the male version is more well known. 22. meri zindagi ki yaadeiN, aa dard se basaa de, dil soz se hai khaali, ik aag si lagaa de, The ghazal king sings for the King of ghazals in the male version. The clue is from the female version. A very well known song. 23. mast saawan ki ghaTaa, bijliyaaN chamkaa zaraa yaar meraa, Dar ke mere seene se lag jaaye re Everything humanly possible has failed. Solution : Call upon the rain gods to prevent your lover from leaving. 24. itne baDe jahaaN meiN, koi to meet hotaa is gham ki baaNsuri meiN, koyi to geet hogaa Frankly, a forgettable song from an early Shashi-Hema movie. IV. Difficult --------------- 25. sun bhi lo, gham ki sadaayeN, dard kaa paighaam lo, dagmagaate jaa raheN haiN, aa ke humko thaam lo, phir na ye kehnaa diwaane, tu kahaaN ghum ho gayaa This '56 tandem is a definite candidate for Ashok's RJGK(on less known MD's) as well as the recently concluded one on Majrooh by Satish S. A fairly well known song. 26. toone apnaa maan liyaa hai, hum the kahaaN is qaabil, woh ehsaan kiyaa jaaN dekar, jisko chukaanaa nushkil, deh bani na dulhan to kyaa ....... 'maiN tumhaare bachche ki maa banane waali hooN'. Ever wonder why female characters in Hindi films generally end up in such a situation ? The mukhDaa and the name of the movie explain it. 27. sajdaa karooN, pujaa karooN, tu hi bataa kyaa karooN, lagtaa hai ye, teri nazar, meraa dharam le jaayegi A surprisingly good composition by an MD much maligned on RMIM. Not surprisingly, very well sung by both the singers. 28. yuN na chup rahiye, ke hoNThoN ko shikaayat hogi, haaye .... khul ke haNs deejiye, hum pe inaayat hogi, hum pe e e inaayat hogi, aisi khaamoshi bhi kyaa - 2, koi panaah ho baiThe A typical tune of the sixties picturized on Vimmi and sung by Asha Bhonsle. The second song of Sonik Omi in this quiz, first being #14. 29. chaandni meiN, raat bheege, hoNTH tharRaaye, meri baahoN meiN machalte, chhupte tum aaye These words are from the male version which did not appear in the film, but are as well known as the better, much better female version. 30. Bheegi raat meiN, peD ke neeche, aaNkh michouli khel rachaaya, preetam yaad karo jab tumne, prem bhara ik geet sunaaya Now, as far as we know, the male version wasn't even in the film. So, what is this song doing here? Well, it IS a great song and both male (non-film) and the female(film) versions have the same tune and lyrics, which sort of makes this song a tandem. This song is from 50's. The male singer is quite well known for his non-film(aka private) songs. ____________________________________________________________________ That's all.
