From: Ashish Bokil Ever wondered what the soul of a song is ? Well, ok! not all of them have it.. in fact most of them are "music superimposed over the lyrics"... where you hear only one of them and the meaning of both -the lyrics as well as the music -just doesn't matter. Its like a curve fitting which lyricist and the music director try to work out and the result is not always the "best fit"... but a compromise between the two. Earlier, the lyricist used to come up with the lyrics first and the music director would fit the music... but now the music director makes the music and then the likes of Sameer etc. fit in "pyaar", "jeena - marnaa - tere sang","muhabbat", "main-tere-liye-tu-mere-liye", "soniye", "heeriye" etc. to churn out "khichadi - which sometimes tastes quite good for short time"( I remember being terribly addicted to "Joomaa chumma de de" and "ek do teen" myself"). Hence to this date, though I like to listen to the new songs (excuse me for giving "khichadi" this sophisticated name) for the sake of change, not very often have they left a mark on my mind and sometimes when they do.... It is either a stolen tune (from Illaya Raja) or its RD or Hridhaynaath Mangeshkar..( Bhupen Hazarika has directerd music in just one movie, so I think it would be too premature to generalize about him, although I am aware of his immense versatility with music in Assamese.) The song, that I am presenting this time is in true senses a soulful song. Merely reading the lyrics is a pleasure and to happen to know the music is a bliss. The pace of the song is just the right one for the emotions that it is dealing with. Mark the emphasis on "gar yaad rahe" by two distinct notes just after "meri awaaz hi pehchaan hai". These effects are the trademarks of RD's brilliance. Also, if you remember the music, the interludes are a treat to the ears. There are two flutes with an octave's difference between them interspersed with sarod for the second interlude that just make me give in to the song and the last one is with unusual combination of guitar and sitar and should be just heard to understand what I mean when I say it penetrates in your heart.... There you go .... Lata - Naam gum jaayegaa cheharaa ye badal jaayegaa meri aawaaz hi pehchaan hai gar yaad rahe... Naam gum jaayegaa cheharaa ye badal jaayegaa meri aawaaz hi pehchaan hai gar yaad rahe.. Sitar........!!!!!........ Lata - waqt ke sitam kam hasiN nahee aaj hai yahaaN kal kaheeN nahee waqt se pare agar mil gaye kaheeN meri aawaaz hi pehchaan hai gar yaad rahe.. Bhupendra - Oooo naam gum jayegaa cheharaa badal jaayegaa meri aawaaz hi pehchaan hai gar yaad rahe... Flute .. higher octave. Sarod...............!!!!!!.............. flute - lower octave Bhupendra - jo guzar gayee kal ki baat thhee hooOOoo hooOOoo ooOOoo.. umra to nahee ek raat thhee raat kaa siraa agar phir mile nahee meri aawaaz hi pehchaan hai gar yaad rahe lataa - Naam gum jaayegaa cheharaa badal jaayegaa meri aawaaz hi pehchaan hai gar yaad rahe.. guitar ::::::::::~~~~~:::::: sitar................!!!!!!......... guitar ::::::::::~~~~~:::::: Bhupendra - din Dhale jahan raat paas ho Lata - oooooOOooo zindagi ki lau muchikar chalo yaad aaye gar kaheen jee udaas ho meri aawaaz hi pehchaan hai... gar yaad hai naam gum jaayegaa cheharaa badal jaayegaa meri aawaaz hi pehchaan hai gar yaad rahe... Bhupendra is as much a part of the soul of this song as the music and the lyrics. This singer has just the right kind of voice to express the delicate emotions and the deep pain because of hurt feelings. Be it "ek akelaa is shahar main" or the solos " Dil dhoondhataa hai" or "Kabhee kisi ko mukammal jahaan nahee miltaa", he has never failed to touch me deep inside my heart. The mere rendition of "din khaali khaali bartan hai " makes one feel the emptiness that Gulzar is talking about... He himself has composed quite a few gazal albums in which he sang with Mitaali but I think they are just average or above average . (Perhaps, he is at his best when he is directed.).. Its a pity that we don't get to hear him very often. ashish :::::::::::::::::::::::::::..................:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Dil dhoondtaa hai phir wahi fursat ke raat din .......... ^ ^ (0 0) Ashish S Bokil --ooO I Ooo-- Tel.# (512) 467-8735 (Res) 4559 Avenue A, # 201 \ / ashish@ccwf.cc.utexas.edu Austin TX 78751 - - ```````````````````````````"""""""""""""""""""'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
