RMIM ke bhaio aur baheno!
I am posting the typewritten version of a special Jaimala program
presented by the Shehanshah-e-Mausiqui, Naushad Sahab, in the
memory of Mukesh.
[Jaimala was a popular Vividh Bharati program for "Fauji Bhai"s
and the Vishesh Jaimala used to be presented by a famous (usually
film) personality.]
Here's the special Jaimala program which I have translated into
English from the original Urdu version. The beauty of Naushad's
refined Urdu is certainly lost in the translation, but I hope u
will enjoy reading what Naushad has to say not only about Mukesh,
but also regarding different music directors as well. Sentences
which cud not be translated properly have been left in the origi-
nal language.
DISCLAIMER: All opinions expressed below are Naushad's and not
mine; esp. the ones regarding Shanky-J :-)
Songs played in the program are included within "[....]. My com-
ments are in "{...}"

***Mukesh: A Singer and a Gentleman***
Is karyakram ke praayojak hain, HMT ghaRiyaan aur HMT tractor!
:-)
Aaj ka vishesh Jaimala karyakram, suprasidh gaayak swargiya
Mukesh ki smruti me pesh kar rahen hain, film jagat ke mashoor
sangeetkar, NAUSHAD.
Maadar-e-watan ki sarhadon ke nigehbaan, bahadur fauji bhaion ko
Naushad ka salaam!
Aaj ki jaimala ke saare phool, mashoor gayak aur bemisaal insaan
Mukesh ke geeton se goondi gaee hai:
[Dharti ko aakaash pukare, aaja aaja prem dwaare, aana hi hoga
Is duniya ko chhoRke pyaar, jhoote bandhan toRke saare jaana hi hoga]
Mukesh was a native of Delhi and the whole city had been imbibed
by his character. He had a heart as open as the Red Fort, a
towering personality like the Qutub Minar, and a nature as gentle
and soft as the waters of Jamuna. My first association with
Mukesh was in Mehboob Sahab's film Andaaz in which he sang some
songs in his beautiful voice. After that our friedship developed
to such an extent that it has left a permanent mark in my heart.
During the 20-25 years of our association, we at times worked to-
gether and there were times when we couldn't. But, our friendship
and mutual respect remained in tact. Whenever I met him, I used
to feel as if I were meeting a true friend. He had a unique
voice. Usme ek ajeeb quism ka dard aur soz tha. Perhaps this is
the reason why most of his very popular songs are sad numbers.
The first song which I'm going to play t'day was composed by the
senior and highly-respected music director, Anil Biswas. Anil Da
has shown us music directors new avenues, and this was the song
with which Mukesh made his debut in Hindi films:
[Dil jalta hai to jalne de, aansu na baha faryaad na kar]
Roshan Sahab was among the few highly knowledgeable and talented
music directors of the film industry. His contributions to Hin-
dustani sangeet are admirable. The following song is based on
folk music, and Roshan Sahab has provided his magical touch to
it:
[Oho re taal mile nadi ke jal me, nadi mile saagar me
Saagar mile kaunse jal me, koi jaane na]
The talented team of Kalyanji-Anandji used to make everyone laugh
with it's wit and humour. Yet, this very team could also bring
tears to the eyes of the listeners with some of its serious
songs. The following song from the film "Dil bhi tera, hum bhi
tere", written by the famous poet Shamim Jaipuri substantiates my
claim:
[Mujhko is raat ki tanhaai me aawaaz na do]
The names Shankar-Jaikishan and Mukesh sound synonymous. SJ have
made the maximum utilization of Mukesh's voice in a beautiful
manner. {God, I can't type this any more :-) } SJ are the shining
stars of the world of music. Mukesh has sung all kinds of songs
under their supervision. The following song from Kanhaiyya is
considered to be among the best Mukesh/SJ combos and was written
by Shailendra, who is a well-respected lyricist:
[Mujhe tumse kuch bhi na chaahie, mujhe mere haal pe chhoRdo]
Whenever one speaks about S.D.Burman, the folk music of Bengal
starts playing in the background. He himself was an accomplished
singer of folk songs. He has time and again made excellent use of
Hindustani Classical Sangeet in his compositions. The following
song from Badini, which Mukesh has rendered in an excellent
fashion reminds one of that same music.
[O jaanewaale ho sake to lauTke aana]
{Ad of "Zaqmee Aurat"..Zamarrud aur doosre theateron me dekhie!
:-) Yo, Hyderabadis, rem. Zamarrud Mahal on Abids ? }
Music director Khaiyyam had his own unique style and pehchaan.
Whenever he was given a chance, he carved a niche for himself.
The list of Khaiyyam's melodious songs is a very long one. It is
my sincere wish that he continues to serve the world of music for
a long long time to come. Film Kabhi Kabhi ka ye gaana jise
Mukesh Sahab ne gaaya tha, main samajhta hun, sangeet aur shaeri
ka bahut haseen sangam hai. Sahir ki shaeri ko Khaiyyam ne apni
mausiqui se aur bhi char chand laga die hain!
[Kabhi Kabhi mere dil me quayal aata hai]
{Ad of "Muquabala"... Ashok me rozana 3 show :-) }
Salil Chaudary is not only a senior music director, but also a
well know scholar of the Bengali language. He has made a mark in
Bengali folk music as well as in Hindi films. His music has al-
ways been highly melodious, and I have chosen the following song
from Madhumati, which Mukesh has sung so very well.
[Suhaana safar aur ye mausam hasin]
Laxmikant-Pyarelal have made big strides in the film industry. I
hope they will continue to succeed further in the music world.
Here's a popular song from the movie Milan which was written by
Anand Bakshi. The fact that almost all songs of Anand Bakshi are
popular is indeed praiseworthy. {C'mon Naushad Sahab, u needn't
praise everyone u mention on ur program!}
[Saawan ka mahina, pawan kare sor]
I would now like to present the first song which Mukesh sang for
me. This song was the beginning of our friendship which I still
cherish in my heart. Mukesh always used to sing this song in his
live performances. This song was written by my dear friend and a
famous Urdu poet, Majrooh Sultanpuri for the film Andaaz:
[Tu kahe agar jeevan bhar, main geet sunaata jaaun]
Hindustan ki tamaam zubaanon me ishq ki sabse zyaada ehmiyat hai.
Aur ishq bhi woh jo bande ka bande se nahin, bande ka Bhagwan se,
Khuda se hota hai. Sabse pyaara piya woh hai, jisse milkar banda
gum ho jaata. Aur koi naam nahin reh jaata siwa Bhagwan ke, siwa
Khuda ke. Usse milkar, aur geet gaate hue, sabhi is duniya se
guzar jaate hain. Mukesh ka Saajan se milan ho chuka hai, lekin
unka geet aaj bhi duniya ke mele me goonj raha hai. Ye is program
ka aaqri geet bhi hai. Isse pehle ek sher aapki quidmat me pesh
karoonga jo Mukesh ke lie quiraar-e-aqeedat me maine pesh kiya
tha:
Mehfilon ke daamanaon se sahilon ke aaspaas
Ye sada goonjegi sadiyon tak dilon ke aaspaas!
[Gaaeja geet milan ke tu apni lagan ke sajan ghar jaana hai]
