1949: The Golden Age Begins: C
Here is the rest of the story.
------------------------------------------------------------
kaniiz
The music was given by Gulaam haidar and hans raaj
bahal, while the background score was provided by
omkar prasad nayyar, whose first movie this was. He
was born in paTiaalaa in 1926 and worked for All India
Radio, Jullundhur before coming to Bombay. He is
credited with initiating many panjabi rhythms, partic-
ularly from bhangra folk dance into hindi movies as
well as providing rock-laden music for gItA datt and
aashaa's early hits. He was one of the most popular
MD's of the Golden Age. You WILL hear about him.
kaniiz was a muslim social, a hit for munavvar sultaa-
naa, shyaam was the hero. Kishor kumar appeared in a
small song sequence, but did not sing in the movie.

karavaT
Although he was not credited, it was Baldev Raj
Chopra's first directorial venture. He was born in
Ludhiana on April 22, 1914. After completing his M.
A. at the Uni- versity of the Punjab, Lahore, he was
the editor of the filmi magazine "cine herald" dur-
ing 1938-47. After part- ition, he came to Bombay
to become a director. He has di- rected 14 movies and
3 TV serials, including the hugely successful
mahaabhaarat (co-directed with his son, ravii). His
first credited directorial venture afsaanaa (1951) was
a hit. He began his production company, B. R. Films, in
1956.
The movie karavaT starred giitaa nizaamii and satiish,
had music by hans raaj bahal and lyrics by 6 men. I
have heard and enjoyed one giitaa solo
gaa ai dil matavaale jhuum kar
written by saifuddiin saif.

The last message
The first three songs by sudhaa malhotraa were in this
movie. Music was by aabid husain Kaa.N and sushaant
bana- rjii, lyrics by mahamuud sarosh, and the songs
were,
ai bekal bechain nadiyaa mere man kii dhiir bandhaatii
chal rahaa svaraaj kaa jhaga.Daa
manavaa u.Daa jaa-e priitam kii or
a solo, a group song with vinod and chorus, and a duet
with umaa devii, respectively.
The movie starred liilaa chiTanis, muzammil and shashi-
kalaa, was about gaandhii (the father of the
nation). The movie also had 5 other lyricists.
-------------------------------------------------------------
nekii aur badii
The first movie by roshan laal naagarth, directed and
lyriced by kedaar sharmaa. Roshan was born in
gujraa.nvaalaa on July 14, 1917. He got his music edu-
cation in Lucknow with ustaad alaauddiin Kaa.n and
manahar barve. He was associated with AIR, Delhi as
an artist and instrumentalist for many years. The
film was a flop, still kedaar sharmaa asked him to MD
baavare nain (1950) which was a memorable hit. He died
on November 16, 1967. More about him later.

nirdosh abalaa
This was zubaidaa's last movie. She was born in 1911 in
suurat, daughter of the navaab of sachin and Fatma
Begum (India's first female movie director). She was
the superstar of the silent movies as were her two
sisters, sultaanaa and shahazaadii. Zubaidaa's best
work was at Kohinoor and Laxmi studios. She was the
leading lady of India's first talkie aalam aaraa
(1931). She is rememberd as the courtesan in urdu
socials. She retired from the movies at the height of
her career in 1937 and acted in only 3 movies after
that. She died in 1990.

rimajhim
Romantic comedy starring kishor saahuu and ramolaa had
music by khemachandra prakaash. This movie has the
only 3 songs sung by kishor kumaar in 1949. I have
heard only one,

pyaaraa
written by bharat vyaas, and a classic.
-------------------------------------------------------------
saavan bhaado.n
The first two duets of lata with S. D. Batish, music by
husnalaal and bhagataraam, lyrics by mulk raaj
bhaakharii. The duets are
royegii vo hii aa.Nkh kisii se jo la.Dii hai
luT gaii hai kisii kii javaanii
-------------------------------------------------------------
shabanam
According to the Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema, this
musical hit produced by Filmistan Limited established
S. D. Burman's reputation. It was a love triangle
involving dilip kumar, kaaminii kaushal and paaro.
Dilip acted in just 2 movies (shabanam and
andaaz) this year, whereas raj (barasaat, andaaz,
sunahare din, parivartan) and dev (jiit, namuunaa,
shaayar, uddhaar) acted in 4 each. The most
popular hero seems to be bhagavaan who acted in 12,
his highest in one year. The most popular female was
probably cuckoo who danced in 17 movies in 1949; in
1950 she will dance in 30. The least popular and
still known to you was miinaa kumaarii, who acted in
just one movie this year, viir ghaTotkach, a pauraaNik
story. However, because of the success of the
movie, miinaa acted in many mythologicals before
returning to social pictures. Nargis acted in 5.
I just love to hear these songs again and again,
especially numbers 1, 2 (a song in many languages), 3,

a chorus and a duet sung by shaantii sharmaa and chi-
tragupt, respectively. Chitragupt also provided the
music. Anjum jai- urii (real name: usmaan Kaa.N

entering the film line. He died in 1990 at age 75.

Finally, here are some other filmi things that happened
in 1949. Films Division is set up. The Cinemato-
graphic Act of 1918 is amended to enforce "A" and "U"
certificates for feature films. Entertainment tax goes
up to 75% and cinemas go on strike. The IPTA-produced
dharatii ke laal (1946) becomes the first Indian
film to receive wide distribution in USSR.

That's all. Enjoy. My sources are the usual. 1950 next.
