Lata Mangeshkar - Music Directors

The following list reads like the who's who of Hindi movie music
directors. The only missing name is that of O. P. Nayyar with
whom Lata did not sing even once!
I have rearranged it in the decreasing order of number of songs.
Other than that, I have made no changes.
In my opinion, this is the complete and up-to-date info on all
the Hindi movie songs, solos, duets, choruses etc. by Lata. This
is an improvement over the info in the encycloaedias. Firstly be-
cause encycos go only up to 1980, whereas this list goes up to
1989. (The book has a publication date of October 29, 1989, so it
does not include all of 1989, however.) Secondly, the third
volume (1951-1960) of the encyclopaedia was published in January
1980, and, more info is now available than it was at that time.
Mr. Har Mandir Singh "Hamraaz" is preparing the updated revised
edition of this volume now. I will post the info when it is
available.
Also, in my opinion, Lata is the most admired singer, even though
Asha has sung more songs. It follows that the relative number N
of songs Lata has sung with any MD (apart from the OPN anamoly!)
can serve as a first approximation to the popularity (not neces-
sarily quality) of the particular MD, unless the difference is
less than the square root of N, (assuming Gaussian distribution)
in which case both could be considered equally popular.
The list has the name of the MD (and his group, if any), the to-
tal number of songs with them and the total number of films with
them. Apart from the usual songs, the list includes even those
songs which were removed from the movie or for which no records
were issued or from the movies that were never released. It
should be mentioned that the total number of estimated songs in
all the Hindi movies from the period 1931-1980 is 44000 and the
total number of movies from the same period is believed to be
5664.

The total number of MD groups is 165, the number of songs is
5067, and the total number of movies is 1825. Because of the
bookkkeeping method adopted by the editor, 10 songs have been at-
tributed to the MD's twice. Also from the book, I can mention
that 3341 solos, 1434 duets with males, 244 duets with females
and 48 songs with more that one partner, were sung by Lata.
Next time, I will endeavor to type in the same kind of info for
the lyricists: the info about male, female and more than one
partners will follow after that.
