I have been a fan of Yesudas for quite a while. The recent "Yesudas"
string prompted me to post the following list of Yesudas songs I know
about. I have found that one has to search hard to get Yesudas
songs. He has sung a lot of songs for Rajshri films. The earlier ones
were quite popular. But besides those, he has sung numbers in obscure
films whose recordings will generally be hard to find. I got those
because I was specifically looking for songs which did not play often
on the radio back in India. I also found that the search was usually
worth it because his songs tend to be very melodious and in a song I
like melody the most. He also has a God-gifted voice of which I am a
fan as mentioned earlier.
In the list below, the Music Director(MD) for one song in a film is
also the MD for the rest of the songs of the film. Same goes for the
lyricist. My record of MDs and Lyricists is very incomplete because
around the time I was collecting these songs I was not paying
attention to them. Most of the MDs are recollected from memory but I
am fairly confident of all my recollections.
My record of his songs sung after 1985 is not that good since I left
India at that time. But by the same token, I do not think he has sung
many songs since then.
Some interesting things to note
1. Ravindra Jain used him a lot.
2. Rajshri Pictures used him a lot.
3. Rajkamal gave excellent music for one movie and then
disappeared. What happened to him?
4. Bappi Lahiri has given some excellent music for Yesudas. This
proves that he has the talent in him. Sadly, he has either failed to
or has been encouraged against using it (Remember, all these songs
that I am oohing and aahing over were bombs amongst the public at
large) most of the time.
5. He has sung a lot of songs with Hemlata.
6. He did start singing for Amitabh at one point but that quickly
trailed off (My guess is that "Alaap" was the reason. This movie
bombed at the box-office. So did its music (even though it was great
IMHO). It is reported that this flop made Amitabh re-evaluate his
career and he decided against doing non-formula films. This decision
directly affected the use of Yesudas for him because Yesudas was never
accepted by the Hindi film industry to do light songs).
I do realize that Yesudas has a career in South Indian films and in
Carnatic classical music but that is not the subject of this mail.
