Today is Mehboob Khan's death anniversary. The maker of Andaz
(old), Aan and Mother India. Here is today's ATMJH from his
unforgettable film Andaaz
#201
Song: Tu Kahe Agar, Tu Kahe Agar, Tu Kahe Agar Jeevan
Bhar ...
Film: Andaz (1949)
Music: Naushad
Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri
Singer: Mukesh
*ing: Dilip Kumar, Nargis, Raj Kapoor, Desai, Cuckoo
I guess, among all four Mukesh song, this was more popular. My
favourite amongst them is 'Hum Aaj Kahin Dil Kho Baithe'. Of
course other two 'Zum Zum Ke Naacho Aaj' and 'Nigaahen Bhi Milaa
Karti Hai ... Tute Na Dil Tute Na' are also equally great. Piano
notes in all these songs are marvelous.
Lata also sung four songs. a) Koi Mere Dil Me Khushi Ban Ke Aaya
b) Meri Ladli, Meri Laadli Ri Bani Hai Taaron Ki Raani c) Uthaaye
Jaa Unke Sitam d) Tod Diya Dil Mera . I like them in the order
they appear above. In 'Meri Laadli' Lata is extremely sweet. But
the competition for top Lata song from the film is clearly
between c) and d) Both are immortal numbers. Is Uthaye Ja Unke
Sitam in Bhairavi ?
Raj Kapoor didn't sing a single song in entire film! The only
song picturised for him was a background number and was sung by
Mohammad Rafi (with Lata). That song is one of my favourite Rafi
duet: 'Yun To Aapas Me Bigadate Hain, Judaa Hote Hain' . In their
divine voices the song has become a memorable duet whose mark
won't go for many years.
It's ironic that after immense success of this film Naushad
returned to both Majrooh and Mukesh only after a gap of 16 years!
Master craftsman perhaps knew well to how and to when to use
talent. Let me take an exception here (it's an excuse) to mention
my favourite song by these three men: 'Aankhen Khuli Hui Thi'
from Saathi. Great lyrics, great music (piano again!), great
singing.
