Song: Chaand madham hai
Aasmaan chup hai
Neend ki god mein
Jahaan chup hai
Film: Railway Platform (1955)
Music: Madan Mohan
Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
*ing: Sunil Dutt, Nalini Jaywant (?)
A fairly well-known, oft-discussed tune this time, but one that I
feel deserves a dedicated post. Ever heard of a song painting a
picture ? Here's one that does exactly that. As Lata croons this
peerless melody, a portrait of a velvety night begins to
emerge... you can actually FEEL the darkness and silence through
the way she sings it. I'm not kidding, it's THAT tangible. (HOW
DOES SHE DO IT ??) This takes me back to a post I had made a few
months ago about the same thing - Lata's incredible ability to
bring out the sentiment of the words through her voice
modulation. Here's another instance of it.
The other thing that makes this song a veritable classic is the
lyrics (rather I should say poetry) - from the one-and- only
Sahir- here's the second stanza from the song..
Roz ki tarah aaj bhi taaren
Subah ki gard mein na kho jaayen
Aa tere gham mein jaagti aankhen
Kam se kam ek raat so jaayen
Breathtaking, isn't it ?
