#329 Song: Hai bas ke har unke Ishaare mein nishaan aur Karte hain mohabbat To guzartaa hai ghumaan aur Film: Mirza Ghalib (1954) Singer: Mohammed Rafi Music: Ghulam Mohammed Lyrics: Mirza Ghalib *ing: Bharat Bhushan, Suraiya A number of composers have set Ghalib to music in the past- I've heard about 3/4 of them, and my personal favorites are Ghulam Mohammed and Khaiyyaam. The moods and styles of the two are quite different - the Ghulam Mohammed tunes have a rather brisk pace and a fair amount of vocal convolutions to them, like this beautiful Rafi melody. Khaiyyaam, on the other hand, goes for more slow-moving, soulful, deeply classical strains (there are some magnificent non-filmi Ghalib ghazals composed by Khaiyyam and rendered beautifully by Rafi). One of the interesting things in this ghazal (something I gleaned from Nita Awatramani's translation/interpretation of Ghalib... thanks, Nita!) is the audacious way Ghalib signs off : 'Hai aur bhi duniya mein sukhanvar bahut achhe Kehte hain ke Ghalib ka hai andaaz-e-bayaan aur' Gee... no one could accuse *him* of being too modest ! Anyway, this is one of those must-buy soundtracks- a Suraiya/Rafi/Talat treasure.
