#331 Song: Kahe jiya dole woh kaha nahin jaaye Kaha nahin jaaye o raha nahin jaaye Kahe jiya dole woh kaha nahin jaaye Film: Anokhi Ada (1948) Singer: Uma Devi Music: Naushad Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni *ing: Surendra, Naseem The discovery that singing star Uma Devi of yesteryears was none other than legendary comedienne Tun Tun, is probably one of the most notable shockers in my musical explorations till now- this was about 8/9 years ago, when I was listening to a song that went 'Dilwaale dilwaale, jal jal kar hi mar jaana, tu preet na kar pachhtaana', and was rather charmed by the sweet voice of the singer. For some arcane reason, I refused to believe my mother when she told me it was Tun Tun, and it wasn't until I saw Uma Devi's name in the credits of Mr & Mrs 55' (Guru Dutt referred to her as Uma Devi in his earlier movies for a while after filmdom started calling her Tun Tun) that I was finally convinced. This one is a simple, sweet, extremely lovable tune which Uma Devi has delivered delectably- it's got a nice wavy rhythm and feel to it, and it sounds particularly charming when she sings it. I believe some of the more notable numbers from this Mehboob production (the second, I think, in his 'A-series') are the Mukesh beauties 'Bhoolne waale yaad na aa' and 'Kabhi dil dil se takraate to hoga'.
