Song: Madbhari yeh pyaar ki palkein
Halki halki bundiyaan chhalkein
Film: Fashion (1957)
Singer: Geeta Dutt
Music: Hemant Kumar
Lyrics: Bharat Vyas
*ing: Pradeep Kumar, Mala Sinha
Here's a completely unnecessary attempt to dispel the 'Gati achha
hai magar roti bahut hai' reactions to Geeta's early songs, as
Anant put it :-). 'Baazi' did do a good job of it, as asserted ;
so did a cohort of other playful, catchy tunes she lent her voice
to.
Like this one. A refreshing brisk-paced melody, laced with some
rather lofty and (for want of a better word) elastic vocals in
the antaraas. A signature tune from Hemantda : sweet simplicity
really was his forte; generating hauntingly melodious tunes out
of fairly simple and at times even predictable, musical patterns.
The way this song ends is funny, though- towards the end of the
first antaraa, Lata cuts in with a completely different song
which appears independently on the soundtrack ("Honthon pe teraa
naam"). Someone who's seen the movie can maybe shed some light on
this queer phenomenon.
Also, can someone confirm the year of its release - I based my
1957 guess on the way Lata's voice sounds :-)
My personal favorite from this movie, btw, is the Hemantda/Lata
duet :
Bahaaron se poochho, nazaaron se poochho
Dil kyun deewaana mera ho gayaa
Laakh sambhaala magar kho gayaa
... a lilting wave of that 'sweet simplicity'
again . This wonderful song is VERY reminiscent of another lovely
Hemantda duet (with Asha) :
Yeh mehfil sitaaron ki, raat yeh bahaaron ki
Aese mein chhed le taraana koi pyaar ka
from 'Arab ka Saudagar' (1955). (I'm not sure which preceded
which, but since the composer was the same I guess this would be
classed as 'music re-use' rather than plagiarism. Or perhaps
paying oneself a compliment :-))
