Song:   Dil mein chhupaa ke pyaar ka toofaan le chaley
Hum aaj apni maut ka saamaan le chaley

        Film:   Aan (1952)
        Singer: Mohammed Rafi
        Music:  Naushad
        Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni
        *ing:   Dilip Kumar, Nadira, Nimmi

An oft-heard tune  today.  I  recently  had  the  pleasure(?)  of
watching  this  movie, Mehboob's adaptation of the Bard's 'Taming
of the Shrew' (and the first Hindi movie to be featured  in  full
color  ?). Not sure what sort of expectations I was going into it
with, but it sure didn't live up to them, given a precedent  like
Amar  (not  a  chronological  precedent,  but I saw "Amar" before
"Aan").

However, this does  not  undermine  the  glorious  musical  score
Naushad  gifted  this  movie with... some of Lata and Rafi's most
memorable tunes to date ("Aaj mere man mein sakhi..", "Maan  mera
ehsaan  arey nadaan.." and some charming chorus numbers). There's
also a lovely Shamshad song, sung teasingly by Nadira's  maid  as
she  helps  Nadira  reconcile  with  the  fact  that the princess
falling in love with the lowly 'dehaati' Jai Tilak (Dilip  Kumar)
:  "Aag  lagi  tan-man mein dil ko padaa thhaamna, raam jaane kab
hogaa saiyanji ka saamna"

Anyways, today's featured song is my favorite  Rafi  melody  from
this  movie, set to rhythm on a running horse's hoofbeats (rather
OPN-esque, huh ?). The song  has  an  infectious  mellifluousness
about  it,  and  Rafi has delivered wonderfully. Quite a charming
situation, too.. and appropriate lyrics to go with it :

Mitataa hai kaun dekhiye ulfat ki raah mein
Woh le chaley hain aan to hum jaan le chaley
        Maut ka saamaan le chaley

        etc...

Put this together with the fact that it is based  on  'Taming  of
the Shrew' and a fair estimate of what's going on can be made :-)
