(And it's the right billing sequence this time, Anand :-))
Another compilation weekend for me, this one. The theme this
time: chorus songs of Lata Mangeshkar from the 40s and 50s- some
of the not-so-wildly popular ones. I was (not-too-unpleasantly)
surprised to effortlessly fill up a TDK C60 within a couple of
hours.. and it's chanting in the background at this moment.
Obviously, ATMJH seemed the next logical stop... so here I am.
Will spend the next few posts on these.(Yeah, I know we've been
seeing quite a bit of Lata on RMIM of late, but it never hurts
:-))
"Nirala" was I think the first Dev-Madhubala starrer to be
released- the Adonis and the Venus of the Indian screen paired
for the first time, as biographer Khatija Akbar put it. Though
the movie itself is nothing to write home about, it features CR
and Lata at their symbiotic best; a veritable treasure of music,
probably most popularized by "Mehfil mein jal uthi shamaa
parwaane ke liye", and (my personal favorite) "Aesi mohabbat se
hum baaz aaye jo dil ko jalaaye sataaye dukhaaye.."
The charm of today's selection, in addition to its sweet tune, is
a decidedly droll picturization- a "gaon-ki-gori" accompanied by
the inevitable army of village gigglers, teasing a "shehar-ka-
chhora" whose car has bailed out on him in the middle of the
bucolic nowhere. She teases him, they tease her, he acts cool,
they tease him, and they all tease happily ever after... as the
lyrics evince- here's the second antaraa :
Chorus: ari o behnaa chalte purze sheharvaale
tuu duur hi rehnaa
Lata: chalte purze hain yeh to hum kya kam hain
ungli pe naach nachaiyyaa nachaiyyaa
Chorus: hoye daiyyaa hoye daiyyaa...
You get the picture... :-)
