Raj Kapoor, Nargis
Nargis' (fifteenth?) death anniversary falls today, May 3.
A few of her songs
in remembrance..
Today's post, actually, is a combined dedication to Nargis
and Shakeel
Badayuni whose death anniversary passed not too long ago,
on April 20. Jaan
Pehchaan is one of the many splendid offerings from Khemchand
Prakash, most
notable for the divine Talat-Geeta duet "armaan bharey dil
ki lagan tere liye
hai" which, had it not been for the fact that Snehal has
already posted it,
would have been a precious addition to the Pacific Duets
series. Oh well, I
shall survive :-)
Geeta Roy has been the voice of Nargis for a large number
of her early films,
such as this one, 'Darogaji', and of course Kidar Sharma's
'Jogan'. The last
two Bulo C Rani soundtracks in fact, feature as many as 12
and 15 Geeta solos
respectively, all picturized, IIRC, on Nargis.
There is an almost child-like innocence in this lovely Kedar-based
tune, my
favorite Geeta solo from this movie. The imploring note in
the "aaoge na"
succeeds in evoking all kinds of protective feelings in the
listener:-). And
Geeta sounds absolutely wonderful, not just in this song
but in all the songs
in this movie- "pardesi se lag gayi preet re", "naina milaake
dil chheena",
etc.
This is probably one of the very few movies that featured
Jeevan in a
non-negative role, playing a noble, brotherly figure to the
unhappy Nargis.
