#99 Song: Cha`ndaa Ka Dil Tut Gaya Hai, Rone Lage Hain Sitaa~~re Dharati Ka Sina Kaa~mp Rahaa Hai, Zulm Sahe? Na Tumhaar~~e~ Film: Khoj (1951) Music: Hansraj Behl Lyrics: Prem Dhavan? Singer: Mohammad Rafi *ing: ? In good old days we had two schools in film music. One led by R C Boral -- a father figure in Hindi cinema music, Punkaj Mullick, Timir Baran, Naresh Bhttacharya, S K Pal and others to represent Bengal and it's Rabindra Sangeet and Nazrul Geet backed by solid folk traditions; and other one representing equally strong Punjabi folk tradition, led by a bunch of music makers from North and in around Lahore. One can easily identify Hansraj Behl with second school. His compositions shows deep influence of Punjabi folk (Heer, Pahaadi etc.) on him. Early Mohammad Rafi -- still pristine in 1950, has sung songs based on this traditional tunes in a classy way. All early Rafi songs for this composer are gems. Today's song, or one from Chakori (1949) -- which is too traditional and carries a stamp of both great men, from Raat Ki Rani (1949) etc. are glorious examples. This song starts with a couplet, sung very melodiously, stating at high notes, and then coming to a scale, one downward for second line: Mohobbat Aur Wafa Ki Is Kadar Tauheen Ki Tune ???? Ke Badle Gunhagaari Mol Li Tune Thereafter, the song remains at low-middle range -- a range where Rafi sounds ideal in his ringing voice. [ Before I conclude let me hurriedly add Anil Biswas's name to the first list shown above :) ]
