Actually, the only reason I followed up this thread was to take a shot : at Zaki :-) Hmmm. I don't really like that guy so I'll reserve comment. (: : Have fun... and after u return, cud u please mail me ur RJGK post, the results : one, I forgot to save it. Sure sir! I'll append it to this mail! BTW, I know you didn't ask and all that, but just wanted to tell ya that I had a great time! Went to Seattle and had lotsa fun! I know this is totally irrelevant, but hey, I just felt like it! : > / \ \ Quid opus est verbis? : I just HAVE to ask this even at the risk of sounding ignorant. What does it : mean? *smile* Nothing to be ashamed of or anything. It means "What need is there for words?". I thought that was rather a neat thing to say. Because if I make a serious post, it will be on music and when you have music, what need is there for words? And if it is one of my bizarre posts then enough has been said, so what need is there for (more) words? ((: Nuts --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Howdy people! I'm back with the (much-awaited I bet!) results of RJGK-12. But before I announce them, a few words from our sponsor. (: It has been a fantastic quiz. I daresay it has been the best ever! There have been a record 35 participants, which I'm sure is more than any previous RJGK. This quiz has not been limited to just a handful of the RMIM gurus. As I peruse through the email ids of the various participants, I note .com and .edu addresses from all over. There even was a netter whose enthusiastic Mom in India wanted to participate it, but alas! she couldn't make the deadline. It had been my fear that Yesudas being not-so-famous in Hindi film music, there might be just few participants and most of them would be people who have heard his South Indian renditions. Thankfully (and shame-facedly) I have been proved wrong. I guess Yesudas' golden voice has well and truly touched chords in the hearts of many music-lovers. It seems that my innovations have proved to be quite popular in this quiz judging by the number of complimentary emails I received. Its quite possible that my second set of clues did not actually help, but it seems the concept has been well-accepted. A sampling of the comments is revealing... Porky: Neat innovations, Nuts :-). Karthik Balakrishnan: Really liked the RJGK-12 that you have compiled. (I am a major Yesudas fan!) Charu Varshney: i like the idea of giving 2 clues . i would be very glad to know the 2nd clue, specially for the tie breakers , which are kinda tough !!! Unni Narayanan: I don't speak a word of Hindi - but, I am the world's biggest Yesu. fan. I think he is the best, and he is severly underated. Ramesh Hariharan: Oye ! The article is not from Manorama .. only the facts are !!! Very nice quiz dude !! Nuts: Sorry Ramesh, I goofed. (: Thanks for the article. And the compliment. Samiuddin Mohammed: Splitting the quiz seems to be a novel idea... I hope it increases participation..... Thanks for the quiz... I enjoyed it thoroughly. Anup Pandey: Great quiz about a great singer. Your choice is really good. Ravi Rai: I think this quiz is really interesting, I could figure out a no. of them from the second line of the clue. Hope u are going to post few more. Nuts: Nopes Ravi, I'd really like to conduct more such quizzes but the response has been so overwhelming that I have had to do more work than anticipated. (: Naaahh, I just don't have enough knowledge. Satish Subramanian: Great! Nice intro. Nice article from Manoram. :) Tough clues :( Wish I had taken the first option that you gave me - that of co-conducting this quiz :) Ms Vishakha Parvate: do you have a name other than nuts? Nuts: I do. All other flame mail deleted. (: Anyway, enough of patting my own back and back to business. The answers to the quiz are below. The first line indicates the song, the next few lines, the first clue and the next few lines the second clue. The numbers in the []s indicate how many people got that song in the first attempt and in the second attempt. Lastly, my comments follow. You will notice Ravindra Jain's name appearing the maximum number of times in the statistics. Followed by a distant second Bappi Lahiri. It's a pity more MDs didn't exploit Yesudas' voice... 1. jab deep jale aana/ jab shaam dhale aana Film: Chitchor Co-singer: Hemlata MD: Ravindra Jain * sangeet milan ka bhool na jaana mera pyaar na thukraana * A pretty well-known song... slow-paced, mellow almost. The accompanying singer is Hemlata who has scored many a memorable duet with Yesudas. [32+1] # Most participants got this one. It _is_ a rather popular song and more people knew it than I thought. 2. ka karoon sajni/ aaye na baalam Film: Swami MD: Rajesh Roshan Lyrics: Amit Khanna * jab bhi koi, aahat hoye manwa mora bhaage * The previous clue begins a stanza. The lines immediately after that are dekho kahin, toote nahin prem ke yeh dhaage [31+1] # Another popular song and most paricipants got it. 3. madhuban khushboo deta hai/ saagar saawan deta hai Film: Saajan Bina Suhaagan MD: Usha Khanna Lyrics: Indeevar * dil woh dil hai jo auron ko apni dhadkan deta hai * There's another version of this song, a duet time with Anuradha Paudwal. The film is "Saajan Bina Suhaagan". [33+1] # Once again, everyone got this. I'd be surprised if people didn't get this. 4. beeti hui raat ki/ sunaati hai kahaani/ yeh subah suhaani ho Film: Ayaash MD: Ravindra Jain Lyrics: Anand Bakshi * daal-daal se sab panchhi nikal pade din ke musaafir apne raaste pe chal pade * Never knew the morning could be so beautiful. Experience the beauty of the dawn - without waking up! [11+1] # Starting with this song, the quiz began to kick. Many people got this song wrong, as opposed to just not getting it. I guess it was confusing. And my second clue didn't exactly help either. (: 5. jaan-e-man jaan-e-man/ tere do nayan/chori chori leke gaye/ dekho mera man Film: Chhoti Si Baat Co-singer: Asha Bhonsle MD: Salil Chaudhary Lyrics: Yogesh * kya karenge, baraske ki jab murjhaayega yeh saara chaman * A fast-paced duet with Asha Bhonsle and MDed by Salil Choudhary. The lines following the clue should give you the mukhda! [27+2] # Fairly popular song as can be seen by the number of people who cracked it. 6. gori tera gaon bada pyaara/ main to gaya maara/ aake yahaan re Film: Chitchor MD: Ravindra Jain Lyrics: Ravindra Jain * yahin ghar apna banaaneko panchhi kare dekho tinke jama re tinke jama re * Another cute solo; sung for Amol Palekar. Cute girl, cute village... [31+2] # Definitely the second clue was a give-away! (: 7. mohobbat bade kaam ki cheez hai Film: Trishul Co-singers: Lata, Kishore MD: Khaiyyam Lyircs: Sahir * kitaabon mein chapte hain, chaahat ke kisse haqiqat ki duniya mein, chaahat nahin hai * Yesudas playbacks (plays back?) for a dour and cynical Bachchan in this menage-a-trois with Lata and Kishore. [30+1] # I was surprised when a few netters didn't get this one. I got mails relating touching stories about how this tune was floating in their mind but they couldn't get it but it seems all worked out well. 8. sunaina/ sunaina/ aaj in nazaaron ko tum dekho Film: Sunaina MD: Ravindra Jain Lyrics: Ravindra Jain * aaj khile phoolon ko tum dekho aur main tumhe dekhte hue dekhoon * Naseerudin Shah shows the birds and bees (literally) to his damsel, the blind Rameshwari, in this title song. [31+1] # Dashed surprised to see how many got this. I have heard this song only once in my life, but it has stuck. I thought this would be an ideal toughie question, but no! I was much mistaken. 9. dil ke tukde tukde karke/ muskuraake chal diye Film: Dada MD: Usha Khanna Lyrics: Kulwant Jani * roothe rahenge, aap jo humse mar jaayenge, hum bhi kasam se sun le haath chudaane se pehle * This solo is perhaps the first song that'll to mind if my SO breaks my heart into itsy-bitsy pieces and walks away... [27+3] # Pretty good response on this one too. 10. aaj se pehle/ aaj se zyaada/ khushi aaj tak nahin mili Film: Chitchor MD: Ravindra Jain Lyrics: Ravindra Jain * isko sanjog kahein ya kismat ka lekha hum jo achaanak mile hain * Never before and never more than today has there been so much happiness... [29+2] # I have never regretted making this quiz slightly easy. It has increased participation to new heights. I'm sure there were a lot of "Yesss!"s when this clue was cracked. (: 11. maana ho tum/ behad haseen/ aise bure/ hum bhi nahin Film: Toote Khilone MD: Bappi Lahiri Lyrics: Kaifi Azmi * khulta nahin, kuch dilruba tum humse khush ho, ya ho khafa tirchi nazar, teekhi ada lagte ho kyon, bezaar se * All right, a give-away clue... do the lines in dekho kabhi to pyaar se darte ho kyon iqraar se remind you of anything? [31+2] # And once again, a popular tune to break the monotony of the tough ones. 12. zid na karo/ ab to ruko/ yeh raat nahin aayegi Film: Lahu Ke Do Rang MD: Bappi Lahiri Lyrics: Faruq Kaiser * maana agar, kehna mera tumko wafa, aa jaayegi * A mellow solo from "Lahu Ke Do Rang". Bappi fans might recognise this. [19+5] # This was tough! Only for the true Yesudas fan... 13. khushiyaan hi khushiyaan ho/ daaman mein jiske/ kyon na khushi se/ woh deewaana ho jaaye Film: Dulhan Wohi Jo Piya Man Bhaaye Co-singers: Hemlata, Bansree Sengupta MD: Ravindra Jain Lyrics: Ravindra Jain * tum jo kaho to saari, mehfil se keh dein pal bhar mein mashoor, afsaana ho jaaye * "Dulhan Wohi Jo Piya Man Bhaaye". With Hemlata again! [23+3] # This had a surprisingly low response. Guess the clues weren't helpful. 14. chaand jaise mukhde pe/ bindiya sitaara Film: Saawan Ko Aane Do MD: Rajkamal Lyrics: P Pankaj * sab tithiyan ka chandrama jo dekha chaaho aaj dheere-dheere ghunghata sarkaao sartaaj * A trick question, if there is one! Listen to the _complete_ song for this. Has a nice Rajasthani touch to the music. [24+2] # I was counting on most recordings cutting out the initial part of the song, as some moronic record-wallahs are prone to do. 15. aapki/ mehki hui/ zulf ko kehte hain ghata/ aapki madh-bhari/ aankhon ko kanwal kehte hain Film: Trishul Co-singer: Lata MD: Khaiyyam Lyrics: Sahir * ek hum hi nahin ek hum hi nahin sab dekhne waale tumko sang-e-marmar pe sang-e-marmar pe likhi shokh ghazal kehte hain * As the clue itself suggests, this song eulogises a lover. I like the lyrics in this song. They are simple and have the usual elements - hair like rain-clouds, eyes like lotuses, etc. [19+0] # The second clue was totally hopeless. (: A tough song... 16. teri chanchal chanchal aankhon main/ maine prem ka saagar pa hi liya Film: Meera Ka Mohan Co-singer: Anuradha Paudwal MD: Arun Paudwal Lyrics: Samir * teri chanchal chanchal aankhon main maine prem ka saagar pa hi liya * This is from a rather recent movie - a flop musical. The songs, however were great! The MD was the late Arun Paudwal. [9+2] # *grin* Sorry folks, but I _had_ to do this. The clue is the answer itself. It was hilarious reading the confused mails "Isn't this the answer itself?" (: 17. ae mere udaas man/ chal dono kahin door chalein Film: Maan Abhimaan MD: Ravindra Jain Lyrics: Ravindra Jain * is bagiya kar har phool deta hai chubhan kaanton ki sapne ho jaate hain dhool kya baat karein sapnon ki mere saathi, teri duniya yeh nahin yeh nahin, koi aur hai * Meet na mila re man ka... usi gam mein yeh gaana... but this one is not from Abhiman! Its from "Maan Abhiman"! [25+3] # I like this song quite a bit. Looks like many others do too! 18. neele ambar ke tale/ do yahaan saathi mile Film: Safed Jhuth MD: Shyamal Mitra Lyrics: Yogesh * zindagi mein aise din kabhi aate hain rasmo ke bandhan mein meet bandh jaate hain phir mehak uthte hain tan ke phool khile * Some stats for this song: MD: Shyamal Mitra Lyrics: Yogesh Co-singer: Lata I have to admit, one of the clues is a white lie. (: [11+3] # Well, this ain't a duet, but that's the white lie... (: 19. teri choti si/ ek bhool ne saara/ gulshan jala diya Film: Shikshaa MD: Bappi Lahiri Lyrics: Gauhar Kanpuri * tere chalan ki aandhi ne dekh le kitne ghar loote * bikhar gaye rishte-naate jeevan ke saathi choote [13+2] # The tie-breakers _were_ tough, I guess. (: 20. chaar din ki zindagi hai/ ja rahe hain din/ do gaye tere milne se pehle/ do gaye tere bin Film: Ek Baar Kaho MD: Bappi Lahiri Lyrics: Maya Govind * deep jalte reh gaye chup gayi moorat kahaan yeh diye vishwaas ke bujh jaaye na ek din * Well, what did you expect? This is a tie-breaker, it is meant to be tough! This one is for the diehard Yesudas fan, so no second clue. I'll say this only once! [12+0] # And the disclaimer itself is a clue... (: I like these trick questions. And now... for the winners!! Wait, wait! Before that, I _must_ say... this has been a lot of fun and my collective congratulations to all the participants - y'all did a great job! Its been fun to have so many people participate and I hope y'all enjoyed the music. Below is a list of the participants and their scores (in no particular order). Names have been withheld to protect identity.
