Neha Desai Posted: 11/27/96 01:23 PM Subject: Results, Answers, Comments......R(m)im Jhim Geeton Ki (35) Folks, I am sure we have kept you waiting for the results ! So here they are finally. We had many first-timers enter RJGKs with this quiz and we are glad that our quiz tempted them to participate in RJGKs. We received entries from: 1. Balaji and Malini 2. Snehal 3. Vish Krishnan 4. Satish Subramanian 5. Pavan and Ravindra 6. Ketan, Ajay D. and Suneeta 7. Ajay Nerurkar and Veena Nayak 8. Anup Pandey 9. Abhay Avachat 10. Surajit Bose 11. Sandeep, Ashish and Ambrish 12. Sami 13. Madhusudan and Anirudha 14. Anand Tiwari 15. Hemlata Khemani 16. Preetham and Vandana 17. Neeraj Deshmukh and Renu 18. Kesav Kaliyaperumal 19. Vinayak and Anagha 20. Harmesh Kaur and Surjit Singh 21. Preeti Ranjan 22. Prince and Neeraj Malhotra 23. Satish Kalra First, all the comments (including cribs, carps, cliches, complaints and compliments :). Vandana: A thoroughly enjoyable quiz. It is quite apparent that most of the songs you have picked are ones that you passionately love yourself. As soon as I saw the starting song, I just couldn't resist dropping all my work and getting down to enjoying all the melodies this quiz promised to remind me of. Anup: A really great quiz about a great lyricist by two great organisers. Do I get some extra points for this. :-)) Jokes apart you have a great collection of songs here. My only problem is Md. Rafi and Lata dominates this quiz and KK who had really great songs with RK does'nt figure in the quiz as he should. > hosts: > It is difficult to associate lyricists with singers. But as > somebody remarked, our quiz turned out to be geriatric, only > partly intentionally. Hence it would have been difficult to bring > KK in. Besides, considering the fact that RK practically retired > in maybe 1972, a very small percentage of his songs would have > been for Kishore Kumar anyway. So his representation in the quiz > may be close to fair. Preeti Ranjan Panda: The strategy of giving the last stanzas of the songs in the clue seems to have accomplished its objective - I was forced to listen to the whole song before turning the player off :-) This is one RJGK where, for most songs, I could not immediately identify them from memory, but got the answers from the rhyme structure, context, hints, previous rjgks:-), etc. Clearly, this man does not write for the masses! :-) Renu and Neeraj: Also, this was more a quiz for the '50s and '60s lot, not bachcha log like us. So we are actually quite surprized that we got this far. > hosts: > the very fact that you are surprised at how far you got > proves that there is a certain ever-green-ness to many of the > songs we included in our quiz. Surajit: In fact I thought the cleverness with which you included the films' name within the clues was far more remarkable than the lyrics themselves. Renu and Neeraj: A general comment about the clues --- it would have been much easier for us had more Pstats-related clues been provided. Clues like 'wonderful song' and 'mellow orchestration' are pretty uninformative as regards the identity of a song and fall in the COIK (Clear Only If Known) category. > hosts : > That the P-stat information was made available in most of the clues > (perhaps 25 of the 31 clues directly point to the MD, most of them > by name). And we did give the statistics for MDs and singers. Renu and Neeraj: Another example ---- "The subdued orchestration is perfect for Lata who is at her tender best." This is as subjective as it gets, maybe I can come up with ten other songs that fit the bill in my opinion. But what does it really tell me about the song in question? > hosts: > We consider it the prerogative of the host(s) to sneak in a > few subjective comments if there is also enough objective > information in the rest of the clue :) Renu and Neeraj: Liked clue #31 a lot, though... :-) Anand: ...you have kept the songs of RK confined to the '40s - '60s era. Now it would do no harm if you had included some of his later songs. Specifically i think this has to do with Chetan's preference of music (am i right?). RK's output was reduced in the'70s and '80s but it was there like the "ladki hai ya shola" song from "Silsila" In the end i feel like a student who deserved an A on this quiz but shall not get due to various "extraneous" factors. This could even have been my first 100% RJGK -:) > hosts: > Rajinder Krishan was most prolific in the 50s and 60s. So it is > natural that a quiz that represents his work will be dominated by > songs from that age. We must also add that almost every song > included here is a veritable gem. It has nothing to do with my > (Chetan's) musical preference ;) Hemlata: You have done a great job. Great selection. Some of the songs selected were very old and it was a nice refreshing experience. though some of the clues were difficult, on the whole the quiz was so interesting as to make me pledge my entries to every RJGK hereafter... Vish: It would have been nice to see the all-time Rafi great from SHARAABI. The voice matches the goodness of words like: Wo duniyaa jahaa.n uske naqsh-e-kadam hai.n wahi.n meri khushiyaa.n, wahi.n mere gham hai.n mai.n ke aaoo.ngaa khaaq us rehghuzar ki ke us rehghuzar ke to zarrey sanam hai.n Haven't seen the movie, but the unsteady walk is quite clear from the rhythm. The interludes show a subtle Himachali influence. Good work by Madan Mohan there. Anyway, I couldn't think of too many other songs that I would have liked to see in the quiz. Your coverage of the top 3 composers is more than adequate Answers and Comments: # represents the number of participants who got the song correct. 1. preet ki a.Ndhiyari ma.nzil me.n chaaro.n or siyaahi aadhi raah me.n hi ruk jaaye is ma.nzil kaa raahi First, a beautiful dard-bhari nazm. Opening piano bars and the mellow orchestration enhance the effect of this great song. Another stanza accuses those in love of cheating their own hearts. Song : Hum pyaar meiN jalane waaloN ko, chain kahaaN Film : Jailor Music : Madan Mohan Singers : Lata Mangeshkar # 20/23 Balaji and Malini: Nice Selection. Actually it is surprising that this particular song hasn't shown up on earlier quizzes on Lata, unless we are worng about this. I (Balaji) remember even picturisation in this Sohrab Modi film very clearly. Thanks to DD we got to see these movies. Snehal: Good movie by Minerva Movieton (Sohrab Modi). I can see the Parsi-Gujarati connection right at the start! :-) 2. kahnaa mere ho.nTho.n par lupti hui aahe.n hai.n yaa raasta unka hai yaa meri nigaahe.n hai.n betaab muhabbat ka betaab hai afsaana What can one say about this song ? It is one of the finest duets of its kind. The magic of the two voices and sheer melody carry it through. The world comes to a standstill when both singers sing in unison towards the end of the song. Another song of this late 50s movie represents one of the rare instances of Mukesh singing for C.Ramchandra. Song : O chaand, jahaaN wo jaayeN Film : Sharada Music : C. Ramachandra Singers : Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsale # 15/23 Vandana: I can hear Asha's voice echoing in my ears in the above stanza. Aren't we incredibly lucky to have, not one, but two divine voices to grace hindi films? The very mention of this song sends me to seventh heaven. Balaji and Malini: Unless you deliberately intended, your clue strongly points to Male/Female duet. Trying to pull a fast one here, are you :) Snehal: Meena Kumari steals the show. Considered her best performance. (Of course very close is Sahib Biwi Aur Gulaam). BTW, thanks for very good sub-clue, w/o which I would have gone guessing. I never try hard :) Yaad aa gaya to thik hai. Surajit: > What can one say about this song ? You're right, I can't say anything.... Satish Subramanian: Didn't realize you could be talking about a Asha-Lata duet.. until I saw that I missed one Asha duet according to your singer-distribution list. > hosts : > Is there something in the clue that points to a male-female duet ? 3. m : dekho woh chaa.Nd badli ki oT me.n chhupne lagaa f : ye neel gagan bhi pyaar ke aage jhukne lagaa m : kitni haseen f : kitni shareer m : hai chaa.Nd ki ye adaa The opening 'O~~~~' of the female singer is echoed by the male, giving it an ethereal quality that is maintained throughout this Hemant Kumar composition. The lyrics use a sawal-jawaab format and are ideally suited for the duet. It remains a prime example of the synergy between these two singers. Indeed, one can say that the world bows in front of this wonderful song ! Song : gum sum saa yeh jahaaN, yeh raat yeh hawaa Film : Duniya jhukti hai Music : Hemant Kumar Singers : Hemant, Geeta # 17/23 Balaji and Malini: The 'kitni haseen, kitni shareer' refrain, almost shouts the song at you. If you had removed that part, maybe, just maybe ... 4. koi na aaye yahaa.N ye mazaar meraa hai khaDaa hoo.N kab se mujhe intezaar meraa hai ye kyaa kahaa, mai.n kahaa.N hoo.N This stanza has been sung with great feeling by Rafi. In fact, he pours his heart into this drunken melody. In another song, Rajinder Krishan uses popular lines from other songs to spin a children's drama version of the old sher-aur-khargosh story - that may have been one of the first spoofs in Hindi films ! (are there any before 1960-61 ?) Chitragupta is brilliant in this soundtrack. Song : maiN kaun hooN, maiN kahaaN hooN mujhe yeh hosh naheeN Film : MaiN Chup Rahungi Music : Chitragupta Singers : Mohammed Rafi # 8/23 Balaji and Malini: >spoofs in Hindi films ! (are there any before 1960-61 ?) ^^^^^^ Well, Kishore did it in CKNG, with 'Teri gathari mein laaga chor' and several others. Also, acc. to Surjit Singh, 'teri ghathari' had been parodied in 30's too. Snehal: Bowled! :( 5. dharo na avgun dhyaan prabhuji raakho mera maan prabhuji bhavsaagar se paar lagaao deejo ye vardaan prabhuji pal pal chhin chhin paapi jeevan daras tihaare paaye Sajjad was a wizard of musical instruments. The jal-tarang provides percussion for this Geeta Dutt bhajan. The movie is full of great songs, including a lovely Geeta-Asha duet. Song : darshan pyaasi, aayi daasi, jagmag deep jalaaye Film : Sangdil Music : Sajjad Husain Singers : Geeta Dutt # 12/23 Balaji and Malini: The Geeta-Asha duet is really unbalanced, Asha really gets just the crumbs in the song, almost like the 'bachpan ke din' later. 6. jaagti hai.n akhi.nyaa.N, soti hai qismat dushman garibo.n ki hoti hai qismat dam-bhar garibo.n ki kuTiyan me.n... A song that has been recognized as a yardstick for loris. Lata sings the 'happy' version. Chitalkar starts the 'sad' one and Lata continues with the above stanza. The subdued orchestration is perfect for Lata who is at her tender best. Song : dheere se aajaa ri, aNkhiyan meiN Film : Albela Music : C. Ramachandra Singers : Lata Mangeshkar, Chitalkar # 20/23 Ketan: I almost always get this confused with "aa ja ri aa nindiya tu aa". Somehow I find a lot of similarity in the compositions. Are loris written to any particular raga? Balaji and Malini: There is also a telugu version of this song (don't know which came earlier, or who The MD in Telugu is) which is just as good. 7. Gussa Guroor laDnaa naarii ki bhool hai ye Tha.nDaa mizaaj rakhna pahlaa asool hai ye baat pate ki... We have another case of tandem songs. One has a woman accusing men of being heartless. The other has the man accepting it - with a BUT. The remake of a South Indian film has music score by Hemanta though he did use one of the original S.Rajeshwara Rao tunes (not the one in this song). Song : yeh mard baDe, dilsard baDe, bedard chalo ji maanaa Film : Miss Mary Music : Hemant Kumar Singers : Mohammed Rafi # 18/23 Balaji and Malini: Did you really want us to answer this :) Let's say you just refer to RJGK-30 :) Vandana: The only "direct" lift is the tune of "brindavan ka krishna kanhaiya". "O raat ke musaafir" is loosely based on the Tamil version "Vaarayo veNNilave" composed by S.Rajeshwara Rao. 8. ik pal sochoo.n meri aasha roop badalkar aai dooje pal phir dhyaan ye aaye ho na kahi.n parchhaai jo pardesi ke ghar aai ek anokha pyaar liye kahe Rajinder suno bhai saadho ! Manna Dey excels in this Rageshree composition. This film is remembered for its great music. Song : kaun aayaa mere man ke dwaare Film : Dekh Kabira roya Music : Madan Mohan Singers : Manna Dey # 23/23 !! Balaji and Malini: Manna Dey really did excel here, but he hasn't probably worked much with MM, or has he? For instance, he maximum work probably is with SJ and SDB, though he has song with most all major MD's. 9. tune tinkaa tinkaa chunkar naagri ek basaai baarish me.n teri bheegi paa.Nkhe.n dhoop me.n garmi khaai Gam naa kar jo teri mehnat tere kaam na aai achchha hai kuchh le jaane se dekar hi kuchh jaanaa One of the best-known songs of Chitragupta. The movie has a kite (patang) song. Song : chal uD jaa re panchhi Film : Bhaabhi Music : Chitragupta Singers : Rafi # 20/23 Balaji and Malini: Would love to get hold of the Talat version of this song, or at least hear it once. Vandana: One of the best songs to showcase Rafi's voice at its beautiful best. > hosts: > seems like we have a closet Rafian here:) 10. tum mere paas hoge Gam baDi door hoga kahta hai jiya mera hoga zaroor hoga laana re laana tashreef laana re There is the ebullience of Spring in Shamshad's transparent voice here. A rare S.D.Burman-Rajinder Krishan combination in which the onomatopoeic end of the refrain has a nice effect. The young woman invites her beloved into her heart through this song... Song : saiyaaN dil meiN aanaa re..aake phir na jaana re... chham chhamachham chham... Film : Bahaar Music : S. D. Burman Singers : Shamshad Begum # 21/23 Balaji and Malini: Not only a rare SDB-RK combo. Bahaar has some other interesting sidelights as well. Shamshad sings for Vyjayanthi, and surprise! KK for Karan Diwan. In fact, there is a rare KK-Shamshad tandem as well here - 'Qusoor aapka, huzoor aapka'. 11. dil dard se betaab hai o jaan-e-tamanna aaraam ka paiGaam sunaane aa ja ...while here, *he* invites *her* into his heart ! The piano prelude of this ghazal is memorable, as is the rest of the music score. This song has to be one of Mukesh's best with Anil Biswas. Going by the above stanza, this can be called the title song of the movie. Song : ai jaan-e-jigar, dil meiN samaane aajaa Film : Aaraam Music : Anil Biswas Singers : Mukesh # 18/23 Balaji and Malini: We had occasion to watch this movie a few months back. The piano prelude is absolutely awesome not only in this song but also in the Lata solo 'man mein kisi ki preet'. A great score by AB. You couldn't have given a better Mukesh song here. 12. banaaya tha ik aashiya.N do dilo.n ne zamaane ki aa.Ndhi ne tinke uDaaye This song is from an early phase of the betrothal of Lata's voice to C. Ramchandra's tunes. His mastery over orchestration is apparent in the way this ghazal is sung to the accompaniment of western instruments. Talat duets with Lata. Song : mohabbat meiN aise zamaane bhi aaye Film : Sagaai Music : C. Ramachandra Singers : Talat Mehmood, Lata Mangeshkar # 18/23 Snehal: Geeta Bali! Good movie, nice songs. Has that good CR-Rafi duet 'Muhobat Jata Ke .... Chale Aa Rahe Hain Hajaamat Kara Ke' and three good Lata songs: - Udhar Se Tum Chale Aur Hum Idhar Se Muhobat Ho Gai Bas Ik Nazara Se, Bas Ik Nazar Se (with Rafi) - Zara Si Der Thi Baki...Dil Kahani Kehana To Chahen - Duniya Zukati Hai Zukaane Wala Chahiye (with CR) 13. f : raat nai har baat nai, hai naya naya zamaana kaisa samaa suhaana, kaisa samaa suhaana m : gaaye chaa.Ndni dheere-dheere, gaye chaa.Ndni dheere-dheere preet-bhara afsaana, preet-bhara afsaana f : aaj mere chhoTe-se man me.n aasha hai muskaati Rajinder Krishan figured prominently as the lyricist for Madras productions. Here is a song signalling the end of sorrowful days. The optimism and the expectance are beautifully reflected in this composition by a talented duo from the South. The contrasting pitches of Hemant and Lata are used to accentuate the mood of the song, especially when they sing the mukhaDaa together. At least one HMV listing for the MD pair is misspelt and reads like a single name. Song : laut gayaa gham kaa zamaanaa Film : Naya aadmi Music : Vishwanathan-Ramamurthy Singers : Hemant Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar #16/23 Balaji and Malini: Thanks to Ashok's RJGK here. Ketan, Ajay and Suneeta: We have a correction to make. In the lines that were quoted, Hemant Kumar actually says : gaaye *chandaniya* dheere-dheere.... Vandana: Vishwanathan-Ramamurthi spelt melody for Tamil films. M.S.Vishwanathan was also the man to introduce one of the best male voices in Indian playback singing - that of S.P. Balasubramaniam. 14. kaa se kauaa, kaaf kabootar Gain GuTarGoo.N bole, Gain GuTarGoo.N bole naa se naiyaa, daal se dil ki he se haaye Dole, he se haaye Dole What better way of learning the alphabet than through a song ? Rajinder Krishan makes this point in this Iqbal Qureshi composition. It has been listed as a Rafi solo by HMV but there is a female voice, perhaps Usha Khanna's, accompanying him. The air of Himachal is good for your health. It is also good for your heart according to this movie title. And it is good for your score too ! Song : al zibr aa, al zeb e, al pesh o Film : Love in Shimla Music : Iqbal Qureshi Singers : Mohammed Rafi, Usha Khanna # 14/23 Snehal: (From subclue. Your clues are superb) Balaji and Malini: You are right, the kid's part *is* sung by Usha Khanna. Vinay and Anagha: But this is a duet by Rafi and Asha and not Usha Khanna as mentioned in the quiz. > hosts : > The film credits names Usha Khanna as a playback singer. The > HMV tape mentions the singers of all songs but lists this one > as a Rafi solo. Hence the conclusion that Usha Khanna is the > playback for the child. Balaji-Malini, what is the source of > your information ? 15. murjha chuka phir bhi ye dil phool hi to hai ab aapki khushi ise kaa.NTo.n me.n toliye Madan Mohan was a master of the ghazal, as evidenced by this composition. If you disagree, you may appeal to the next higher court of law. Song : yooN hasaratoN ke daagh, mohabbat meiN dho liye Film : adaalat Music : Madan Mohan Singers : Lata # 22/23 Snehal: MM's gazal output at it's best. But... > If you disagree, you may appeal to the next higher court of law. ...You have not mentioned the name and address :( Satish Kalra: (According to one music critic, the Madan Mohan-Lata ghazals were exercises in dialogues with the ''Almighty'!) 16. akhi.nyo.n ki nee.nd gai manwa se chain re chhup chhup roye mere khoye khoye nain re Although Hemant Kumar was fairly even-handed in his use of singers, there was always a special something in his Lata songs. Here is a stellar example of this. You can find the tenderness of a fragrant bud in Lata's rendition of this late 50s song. Song : chhup gaya koyi re, door se pukaar ke Film : Champakali Music : Hemant Kumar Singers : Lata Mangeshkar # 22/23 Balaji and Malini: "tenderness of a fragrant bud"! nice description :) Ketan, Ajay and Suneeta: This has got to be one of Lata's best, IMHO. Sounds more CR'ish, than Hemant Kumar'ish though, atleast from Lata's voice. 17. jaha.n kisi nagar me.n kisi dvaar par koi na taala Daale prem ki ba.nsi jahaa.n bajaata aaye shaam savera This song describes our desh with the best possible use of words. A favourite with TV and radio stations on Aug.15 and Jan.26, this Hansraj Behl tune has been immortalised by Rafi. Song : jahaaN Daal Daal par, sone ki chiDiya karti hai baseraa Film : Sikandar-e-Azam Music : Hansraj Behl Singers : Mohammed Rafi # 22/23 Balaji and Malini: Rather funny for both Premnath and Prem Chopra to have different type of role in the same movie. Vandana: Oh, lovely song. Rafi's voice combined with the lyrics always moves me to the verge of tears. I know it is not a sad song. Wonder why Hansraj Behl never made it big. He seems to have worked mostly for home productions. This movie has a beautiful Lata solo picturised on an extremely cute Mumtaz - "O mere yaar, tere saath saath mera pyaar'. Snehal: I didn't know this was by Rajendra Krishan! As I am progressing, my appreciation for the hosts is increasing for their style of presentation, their clues, their selection of songs and spectrum covered. All is just 'Sarvaang-SampurNa' > hosts : > thanks ! 18. bhool kee unka humnashi.n ho ke roye.nge dil ko umrabhar kho ke haaye kya cheez thi looTa baiThe An all-time great Lata-Rafi nazm from a composer who excelled in his use of both these singers. The picturization is very cute - Bharat Bhushan writes an antara which Madhubala sings; then she writes a response which he sings. Song : do ghaDi wo jo paas aa baiThe Film : Gateway of India Music : Madan Mohan Singers : Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar # 23/23 !! Balaji and Malini: This superb romantic song provides a great contrast to the playful 'dekhta chala gaya main zindagi ki raah mein' picturised on Johnny Walker and Madhubala. Satish Kalra: (Another Rafi-Lata duet from this film "dekhta chala gaya main zaindagi ki raah mein" has excellent voice control of both singers, and how Rafi's voice so well suited Johny Walker!.) 19. armaan tha gulshan par barsoo.n ek shokh ke daaman par barsoo.n Talat sings for Salil. Need more clues? OK, this song has a happier version. Do you see the shadow of a legendary composition here? Song : itna na mujhse tu pyaar baDhaa, ki maiN ik baadal aawaara Film : Chhaaya Music : Salil Chowdhury Singers : Talat Mehmood # 20/23 Balaji and Malini: You really are getting influenced by Sami's quiz here, aren't you :) 20. ye dard mohabbat ka seh ja tu aag ke dariya me.n beh ja kahti jo duniya kahne de tu jalte jalte ye keh ja yoo.N jal marte hai.n deewane The relationship between the moth and the flame features in lots of songs. This one is a rare S.Mohinder composition. Song : tera kaam hai jalna parwaane, chaahe shama jale ya na jale Film : Paapi Music : S.Mohinder Singers : Mohammed Rafi # 20/23 Surajit: well, i'm completely burned by the clue anyway. Balaji and Malini: Also, a rare Raj Kapoor/Rafi combo. Rafi also sang for Raj Kapoor in 'Do Ustad'. Snehal: Great song. In this movie Raj Kapoor was in double role! But according to my info. MD is MM. One of the 14 RK-Nargis starrer. > hosts : > Then MD *is* S.Mohinder. > Rafi also sings for RK :) in Dastan ('tarari aarari' with Suraiya) > and Amber (a Ghulam Mohammad RK-Nargis starrer. A very young Tanuja > plays the young Nargis) 21. jahaa.N chhup-chhup ke ham milte the saajan woh gali hamko ishaaro.n se bulaayegi magar ham tum juda ho.nge Named after a city in Pakistan, this film had a wonderful Lata-Karan Dewan duet. Song : bahaareN phir bhi aayeNgi, magar ham tum judaa hoNge Film : Lahore Music : Shyamsunder Singers : Lata Mangeshkar # 16/23 Balaji and Malini: Again here we were helped by the recent discussion on RMIM, which incidently triggered by me (Malini) :) And ironically, it was Chetan's post which had contained the answer :) Snehal: This one is one of my favourite. I have recorded a cassette of Lata gems and has given title "My Favourite". This one appears as very first there. I love this number. Anand Tiwari: You give the film easily. But it is not the Lata-karan dewan duet why? i liked that song > hosts: > because, as Malini mentioned, it was discussed recently. And > musically speaking, this song is wonderful too ! 22. nanhi-si jaan meri kaho naa jalaaoge chhoD ke mujhe kahi.n chale to naa jaaoge bhool jaana nahi.n dil me.n basaa ke Lata sings for Husnalal-Bhagatram. The film was dominated by songs sung by the heroine. You can see traces of the Noorjehan influence in Lata's singing of this song. Song : chale jaana nahiN, naina milaa ke, haaye saiyaaN bedardi Film : BaDi behen Music : Husnlal-Bhagatram Singers : Lata Mangeshkar # 19/23 23. faasle waqt ne miTaa hi diye dil taDapte hue mila hi diye kaash is waqt maut aa jaaye zindgaani pe aake chha jaaye Santoor, sitar and sarangi prefaces this beautiful melody from a film set in the Mughal period. Suman sounds very sweet in the above stanza which is followed by the leading couplet sung by her and Rafi. The Madan Mohan tune was recycled by Rajesh Roshan for a recent Sonu Nigam hit. Song : baad muddat ke ye ghaDi aayi Film : JahaaN Aara Music : Madan Mohan Singers : Mohammed Rafi, Suman Kalyanpur # 18/23 24. f : shaam wahi hai wahi sitaaraa m : kitna pyaara f : yahi.n hua tha pahle pahle pyaar hamaara m : yahi.n hua tha pahle pahle pyaar hamaara f : aaj mile ham usi Thikaane m : phir taqdeer jagaane The happy version starts off with Asha humming the tune. This sad version has a cameo appearance of Rafi's voice. It starts off with Asha singing the opening line with no musical accompaniment. Rafi sings the beginning of the next line, pauses, Asha completes it and then the rhythm kicks in. The above stanza is a reference to the corresponding line in the happy version 'chamkaa shaam ka pehla taara'. Simple, yet elegant words. This song is perhaps the best known one from this C. Ramchandra movie. Song : dekh hameN aawaaz na dena, o bedard zamaane Film : Amardeep Music : C. Ramachandra Singers : Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhonsale # 16/23 Surajit: meri taqdeer to soyi hui hi rahi...yeh gaana bhi main nahin pehchan sakaa 25. m : kabhi-kabhi aise bhi aaya karo chaa.Nd nikle to ghar jaaya karo f : aaye.nge jaaye.nge marzi se ham pyaar hai to naaz bhi uThaaya karo The heroine seems to have an implicit Trust in tomorrow when she sings this Ravi song. Lata and Mahendra Kapoor create an effect similar to 'achchhaa to ham chalte hai.n...' Song : aaj ki mulaqat bas itni, kar lena baateN kal chaahe jitni Film : Bharosa Music : Ravi Singers : Mahendra Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar # 22/23 Satish Subramanian: Ah, the sayonara-specialist Asha Parekh. Anup: A good song and MK(under appreciated singer in RMIM, how and why is beyond me :-)) has done a good job and AFAIR has sung in the Talat style) > hosts : > how anyone can compare MK with Talat is beyond us!:) 26. tu jhaTpaT aakar chhatpat mere andhe ku.Ne me.n deep jalaa ke kar de ujaala o zaraa kar de ujaala One of the best comedies ever made. Kishore playbacks for himself, not Sunil Dutt. Song : mere bhole balam, mere pyaare balam Film : PaDosan Music : R. D. Burman Singers : Kishore Kumar # 23/23 !! Balaji and Malini: This must be RMIM's favourite KK number for quizzes :) Anup: Register my complaint of only one KK song, what about Zarurrat hai, Ina mina dika etc. Oops there is one RAFIan and one Lata Bhakt what else can I expect from these organisers. :-)) > hosts : > (Neha) a point of clarification here anup... > both are lata bhakts and both rafians too :) > (Chetan) I don't know what she is talking about :) Ketan: Probably the best song in the movie. Only KK could have pulled it off. > hosts: > Cacophony thy name is KK?! :) 27. f : o chaa.Nd, musafir raat ke, kyoo.N sune hamaari baate.n m : tune to dekhi hogi aisi kitni hi raate.n f : chhup ja re, jaa chhup ja The chorus is quite wonderful, though having to decipher the words would be punishment. A well-known Bangla singer, Sandhya Mukherjee is not as familiar a name in Hindi filmdom. She sings this duet with Hemant. Song : gup chup gup chup pyaar kareN Film : Sazaa Music : S. D. Burman Singers : Hemant Kumar, Sandhya Mukherjee # 18/23 Balaji and Malini: Is this the only song by Sandhya Mukhrjee in Hindi films? Becuase this song hits you right in the face, with the mention of her name. Anand: I have very fond memories of this song. My father used to sing it when i was a child. One of the first songs i learnt by heart. Sandhya Mukherjee is a "geetashree" and a very revered figure in Bengal 28. taDpaayegi jab dil ko saawan ki haseen raate.n tanhaai me.n kar le.nge tasveer se do baate.n deewane ne khud apni zanjir banaai hai Oil paint, water colour, lachrymal secretion ? Displayed here is a potential that was never fully realized. Madan Mohan composed this tune for Asha in a style completely different from his tunes for Lata. And the effect is tremendous. Asha conveys the mood of the poignant lyrics very very well. Song : ashkoN se teri hamne, tasveer banaayi hai Film : Dekh Kabira roya Music : Madan Mohan Singers : Asha # 14/23 Balaji and Malini: Comments similar to the other song from this movie hold good here too. MM probably really limited himself. Surajit: The change from oil paint to water color suggests "is rang badalti duniya mein," but that's so obviously wrong, I'll just shed some lachrymal fluid over my inability to crack this clue and move on. Sami: Although I adore this Asha gem, I feel that from the lyrics point of view Talat's "Humse aaya na gaya..." is much better.... 29. tu nahi.n to ye rut ye havaa kyaa karoo.n door tujhse mai.n rah kar bataa kyaa karoo.n, kyaa karoo.n sunaa sunaa hai jahaa.N, ab jaaoo.N mai.n kahaa.N bas itnaa mujhe samjha ja This superhit soundtrack had a veritable galaxy of Lata solos. A soft, sad one is presented here. It ends with a claviola-posing-as-a-been (though Rajinder Krishan calls it a baa.nsuriya in another song!) piece that has become a cultural icon of sorts. Hats off to Hemanta and his assistants ! Song : mera dil ye pukaare aaja, mere gham ke sahaare aaja Film : Nagin Music : Hemant Kumar Singers : Lata Mangeshkar # 21/23 Abhay: I think the clue was yours(Neha's), but here the write-up was definitely Chetan's. In that case I'm pleasantly surprised to read praise for Hemant's assistants. > hosts: > abhay, a part of your comment is true and a part isn't. > But let us keep you guessing :) Vandana: A stellar soundtrack, indeed. Sami: Yikes! Lousy song.... almost like a Shanky-J tune :-) (Ok, IMHO) > hosts: > The IMHO saved you this time, Sami ! 30. phir pooran swaraj ka naara jaa laahor pukaara aazadi ka veer sipaahi kabhi na himmat haara phir daanDi par ja kar apne haatho.n namak banaaya saare desh ko satyaagrah ka sundar sabak paDhaaya The very simple words weaving the life-story of one of India's most famous sons were set to music by Husnalal-Bhagatram and sung by Rafi in the form of a four-part non-film song. Song : suno suno ai duniya waaloN baapu ji ki amar kahaani Film : Music : Husnlal-Bhagatram Singers : Mohammed Rafi # 17/23 31. al~vidaa~ al~~vidaa~ Song : ye zindagi usi ki hai, jo kisi ka ho gaya Film : Anarkali Music : C.Ramachandra Singers : Lata Mangeshkar # 20/23 Balaji and Malini: Is Ashok brainwashing you guys :) :) Abhay: If this is a clue, then it adds 1 to my score !! :-) I won't tell you the song but only this ... CR > Naushad ... Gimme a point :-) Vandana: I almost missed this one. :) Thought you were just bidding us goodbye. Anup: A very appropriate song for ending a beautiful quiz. Lata M. ended her concert in LA with this song and people were in awe of this great lady and this great song. She did a show in Houston a day before so at the time of al~vidaa her voice became dry. Being a gracious lady she apologised for that and I had even more respect for her after that Anand: Kehna hi kya is clue ke baare mein! Ashok ji's smile is behind this clue. Beats me completely. 2 words(both the same) and that too from an Antara. Too much! I protest!!!! Thanks to all who participated in this quiz. You all were fantastic!
