The following is a continuation of my previous post about Lata's
songs. Once again, this includes only songs from HINDI MOVIES,
other languages are excluded and non-filmi songs are also exclud-
ed. This one is about lyricists. I believe that she sang for al-
most every lyricist who wrote songs for Hindi movies after 1946
or so.
In my opinion, Lata (about 5250 songs up to 1992) is the most ad-
mired female singer, even though Asha (about 7500 songs up to
1992) has sung more songs. Clearly the relative number of songs
Lata has sung for any lyricist can serve as a first approximation
to the popularity (not necessarily quality) of the particular
songwriter.
The list has the name of the lyricist (and his collaborator, if
any), the total number of songs with them and the total number of
films with them. Apart from the usual songs, the list includes
even those songs which were removed from the movie or for which
no records were issued or from the movies that were never
released. It should be mentioned that the total number of es-
timated songs in all the Hindi movies from the period 1931-1992
is 50000 and the total number of Hindi movies from the same
period is believed to be about 7000.
Once again, this is straight from the book, no editing has been
done by me, except to correct obvious misspellings.
Note: To make the pronunciation easy, I have used the excellent
transliteration scheme of Avinash Chopde, mostly. I think that it
should be adopted universally.

about Lata's male singing partners in Hindi movies.

A comparison with Mukesh:
For comparison purposes it may be noted that all the songs ever
sung by Mukesh, during the period 1941-1982, in movies of all
languages and including non-movie records like bhajans, ghazals
etc. is 994. A compilation of the FULL TEXT of each of the 992
songs (info about 2 bangla songs was obtained after the publica-
tion of the book) and all the relevant info about the song, like
the movie, year, MD, lyricists and co-singers, if any, was pub-
lished by Mr. Harish Raghuwanshi of Surat, Gujarat in a 684-page
book called "Mukesh Geet Kosh" in 1985. The book is out of print
now, but Mr. Raghuvanshi is working on the second edition. He has
recently published an authoritative and comprehensive 412 page
encyclopaedia of 599 Gujarati movies (1932-1994). He can be

One final note: Many of you have written saying that I have done
a job that is herculean, monumental, heroic, marathon etc. Please
remember that the compilers have put in much greater effort work-
ing for many many years, going to the Poona archives, HMV ar-
chives in Bombay and Calcutta, the famous booklet shop of Mr.
Hussainibhai Bookletwalla of Grant Road, Bombay, private record
collections, cine artists and what not. In comparison with all
